Short film festivals take place all over the world, just like ‘normal’ film festivals.

Some feature film festivals interpret short films into their festival, like Some short film festivals are completely separate.

• The Sundance Film Festival: This is the largest independent film festival in the US.

• Founded in 1978, it shows 200 films to its attendees, which was 46,731 in 2012.

• Held in Park City, Salt Late City in Utah, United States.

• Sundance offers a Short film Tour, which shows 95 minutes of 8 different short films.

• Founded in 1946, this film festival is held in Cannes in the South of France.

• All genres and types of film are shown here, documentaries from around the world to good old fashioned feature films

• However, this is an invitation only event…

• Short films compete to be shown in the Short Film Corner of the festival.

• Raindance prides themselves on showcasing feature and short films as well as music videos by filmmakers all over the UK and the world.

• It supports independent, new and alternative filmmakers not just for the duration of the 12 day festival, but the whole year.

• This year it will occur on the 21st September to the 2nd of October in Piccadilly Circus where it will screen over 150 short films.

• This festival also has an influence on the short films who are nominated to win an Oscar.

• Bigger streaming websites such as Netflix, don't stream as many short films, if any, because they are not as popular with their subscribers.

If a short film wins an award, they will be publicly named as the winner of an award, and therefore will receive credit for it. A film who has an award to its name is going to catch the interest of audiences more so because it will be seen as a successful short film. For example, the audience already knows that this film is going to be good because it has won an award. This is a method of distribution in itself.

Again, Lights Out can be used as an example. The short was so successful that this year it is now being released as a feature film.

A short can be used to ‘test the waters’ for an idea and film. They create hype for the film and makes sure that the idea is good enough.
