Women Can Be Priests! The Case for Women’s Ordination in the Catholic Church
We are faithful Roman Catholics who support discussion about women’s
ordination. We do not promote illegal ordination of women because we believe that the Church should be reformed from
within. We love our family, the Catholic Church. We accept the authority of the
Pope and respect his personal integrity as an outstanding spiritual leader.
Nonetheless we are convinced that he and his advisors continue to make a serious
mistake by dismissing women’s ordination. We feel obliged in conscience to make our reasons known. In so doing, we fulfill our duty to speak out as Church teaching and
canon law provide... and as our present Pope has repeatedly told us to do.

‘Criticism of papal declarations will be possible and necessary to the degree that they do not correspond with Scripture and the Creed, that is, with the belief of the Church.
Where there is neither unanimity in the Church nor clear testimony of the sources, then no binding decision is possible; if one is formally made, then its preconditions
are lacking, and therefore the question of its legitimacy must be raised.’
Pope Benedict XVI (Josef Ratzinger as he then was), Das neue Volk Gottes, Entwuerfe zur Ekklesiologie, p. 144, Patmos 1969

In accord with the knowledge, competence and preeminence which they possess, the Christian faithful have the right and even at times a duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which
pertain to the good of the Church, and they have a right to make their opinion known to the other Christian faithful, with due regard for the integrity of faith and morals and reverence towards their
pastors, and with consideration for the common good and dignity of persons.
Canon 212 § 3
A custom without truth is merely ancient error. - ST. CYPRIAN (LETTER 74,9)

The Case:
Eight out of ten Catholic scholars support the ordination of women. Our work is unique in that besides providing all Vatican documents that ban the sacrament for women, we also provide commentaries and texts of many theologians who give their reasons in favour of it.
By covering decrees of councils, synods, statements of Church Fathers, medieval theologians, historical records, contemporary articles, discussions on scripture, tradition, canon law, apostolic letters, the teaching authority, and the rights and responsibilities of the faithful, we help people judge for themselves the merits of the Vatican ban. By making information accessible in an array of languages, we facilitate informed international dialogue about the case.
