NitrogenfixationistheprocesswhereinN2isconvertedtoammonium,essentialbecauseitistheonlywaythatorganismscanattainnitrogendirectlyfromtheatmosphere.Certainbacteria,forexamplethoseamongthegenusRhizobium,aretheonlyorganismsthatfixnitrogenthroughmetabolicprocesses.
Nitrogenfixingbacteriaoftenformsymbioticrelationshipswithhostplants.Thissymbiosisiswellknowntooccurinthelegumefamilyofplants(e.g.beans,peas,andclover).Inthisrelationship,nitrogenfixingbacteriainhabitlegumerootnodulesandreceivecarbohydratesandafavourableenvironmentfromtheirhostplantinexchangeforsomeofthenitrogentheyfix.Therearealsonitrogenfixingbacteriathatexistwithoutplanthosts,knownasfreelivingnitrogenfixers.Inaquaticenvironments,bluegreenalgae(reallyabacteriacalledcyanobacteria)isanimportantfreelivingnitrogenfixer.
