44 why go
As I ref lect on the path my l i fe has taken, my mind f lashes back to somebizarre and crazy experiences. On my very fi rst short-term mission trip toKenya, I remember walking into a smal l, dark, Maasai house made ofsti cks and cow-dung, almost bl inded by the smoke from the cooking fi reinside and real i sing that this was a very di fferent world from anything I ’dever experienced.
I have vivid memories of being up a mountain in Romania and having gotthe cable car to the top, was horri f ied to discover that we’d missed the lastcable car back down and would have to walk along a dangerous andprecarious path to get back. The spectacular scenery i s not the thing thatsti cks most in my mind from that experience! I can safely say you’l l nevercatch me doing a bungie jump.
More recently, I found myself walking into a Sikh temple having been invited tocelebrate Diwali with some friends. As I walked around the Gurdwara, my emotionaland spiri tual senses were alert to that fact that I was in the midst of people on a verydi fferent fai th journey to my own.
Whether you use your feet or a set of wheels to get around, no doubt you have vividmemories of some of the places you’ve been. Some of your experiences wi l l have beenfun, some frightening, and some you’d rather forget.
Living as a disciple of Jesus wi l l inevitably lead us to walk a chal lenging path. Buteveryone who chooses to fol low his cal l receives a promise – that he wi l l walk withthem, every step of the journey.
As we fol low in his steps we may be cal led to walk in dangerous places, just as he did.Jesus l ived out his ministry in an intentional, calculated and almost defiant way buthe knew that with every chal lenge he faced, he was safe in the wi l l of the Father. Thesame is true for us. The promise of his presence with us on the journey gives uscourage to step out.
This edition of the Short-term Service Directory invites you to take a walk. As youconsider taking your fi rst steps into mission, I pray you’l l be inspired not only by theexample of Jesus but by the experiences of others as you read on.
Why not ask God i f there are si tuations he might be cal l ing you to where you mustwalk as Jesus walked into new and chal lenging terri tory. I recently heard amissionary say, ‘The posture we take defines how we experience the journey. E itherwe step back or we step out.’
I n his last of seven pictorial books recounting his incredible odyssey of the Lakelandfel ls, Alfred Wainwright penned these final words - ‘Watch where you put your feet!’Fol low in Jesus’ steps and you’l l be guaranteed to have the journey of your l i fe.

66 why go
First let’s see Him cal l ing two people to walk with Him.
I n Luke 5:1 we read that the people are crowding around
Jesus l i stening to the Word of God. He needs a pulpit.
Simon Peter’s boat i s avai lable, so he asks Peter to push
it out a l i ttle way from the shore, then He si ts down and
teaches. He finishes His teaching and Jesus, the
carpenter-turned-preacher, gives an instruction which
might real ly have offended Peter, the experienced
fisherman. ‘Go out where i t’s deeper, let down your nets
and you wi l l catch many fi sh.’ The statement about
teaching grandma to suck eggs comes to mind. I ’ve no
idea what i t means, i t just comes to mind! You can
imagine Peter being particularly offended because he
and his col leagues had just completed a hard and
extremely frustrating night-shi ft. ‘We worked hard al l
night and didn’t catch a thing!’ He could have gone on
to say, ‘We al l know that night here i s the best time to
fi sh, and by the way, you’re encouraging us to go into
deeper water, but deep water i s not the best for lake
fi shing.’
Notice that Jesus does not choose to come to the man for
whom everything i s going wel l. He meets Peter after a
night of fai lure with the cal l to fol low Him. Later in the
same chapter He wi l l cal l Matthew to fol low. He’s si tting
at his tax col lection booth when Jesus invites him.
Matthew is del ighted, ready immediately to leave
everything. I t’s probably the fi rst kind thing anyone has
said to him in a long whi le. He throws a party to
celebrate. Many of his tax-col lector cronies are there,
Let’s go for a walk
‘Go into all the world – I will be with you always.’
The presence of Jesus specifically linked with
commitment to the mission of God. Many of you
reading this are considering a period of
concentrated mission involvement. Jesus
welcomes you to walk with Him into ministry. So
let’s go back 2,000 years and see the sheer
excitement of walking with Jesus in ministry.
77why go
experience of fi shing.
Previously in this Gospel
of Luke we read of the
remarkable authority with
which Jesus taught, the
demons recognising and
bowing to that authority.
As Bishop Ryle comments,
‘One greater than man was
in Peter’s boat.’ Peter’s own
mother- in- law experienced his
heal ing authority, and then
everyone from the vi l lage who
was brought to Jesus with any
sickness was healed by the touch
of His hand.
Peter has seen and heard enough
to agree to this unusual
instruction, and what fol lows
would leave Peter in l i ttle doubt
of who is in the boat with him.
The return to fi shing results
in nets so ful l they begin to
tear. Shouting to their fel low
fishermen for help, i t’s not
long before al l their boats are
so ful l they are on the verge of
sinking. Peter knows now who he
is deal ing with. ‘This doesn’t
happen. I know this business. You just
don’t get catches l ike this in the daytime in
deep waters. This i s against al l my knowledge
and experience. This i s God.’ Peter cal led Jesus
‘Master’ in verse 5, but now it’s ‘Lord’ in verse 8.
From chi ldhood Peter has been taught, ‘The
Messiah i s coming.’ Now he believes He’s si tting
in his boat!
and the Pharisees are indignant.
‘Why do you eat and drink with such scum? ’
(NLT)
Jesus invites us to join Him in the ministry.
I t’s worth noting those He cal ls to
fol low Him – a man struggl ing after a
night of fai lure, another
considered scum by his peers.
So why does Peter (the
experienced fi sherman) do what
Jesus (the novice fi sherman) says?
You can see that ini tial ly he struggles.
‘Master we worked hard al l night and
didn’t catch a thing!’ What do you
expect next? Wel l, I suppose i t
depends on your personali ty. Some
might expect Peter to continue, ‘So,
Jesus, could you possibly let
fi shermen fi sh and maybe you could
do a l i ttle joinery on my boat or
possibly tel l another of those
fascinating stories – I think they’re
cal led parables.’ Others of you might
expect Peter to be a l i ttle less
restrained. ‘On your bike, my friend.
We’ve had enough for one night!’
Peter in fact continues, ‘But i f You say
so, we’l l try again.’ When Jesus got
into his boat, Peter wasn’t in i t; he
was washing his nets. But he
hauls the nets back into the
boat and prepares to set sai l
again at the suggestion of this man with no
Who we’re walking with
88 why go
I t’s so important to real i se whom we are walking
with as we move into ministry – the One through
whom the world was made invites us to walk
with Him.
Now let’s see Jesus in a di ff i cult ministry moment.
Two chapters later in Luke we read of Simon the
Pharisee inviting Jesus to his home for a dinner
party. I f he was expecting to have a quiet meal with
Jesus and maybe some rel igious discussion, he was
very soon disappointed. The meal was clearly not
private. People could come in, watch and l i sten. I n
walks a prosti tute. No doubt stunned si lence
around the meal table fol lows with an embarrassed
pause in the conversation. The woman apparently
says nothing, just stands beside Jesus as He eats and
she’s quietly weeping. For this rel igious man to have
a prosti tute in his home defi l ing his house was bad
enough, but now she was real ly ruining the meal.
How could they have a rel igious conversation with
her making a spectacle of herself just standing
weeping?
Soon they have a smel l to contend with. A pleasant
smel l, but probably not appreciated so close to the
food. Her weeping i s now wetting the feet of Jesus,
so she bends down and begins to wipe his feet with
her hair and kiss them. Talk about embarrassing.
She then pours expensive perfume on His feet. The
si lence in al l of this i s quite deafening. She says
nothing and Jesus remains si lent. The only person
who speaks i s Simon and he talks to himself. ‘When
the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this he said
to himself, “I f this man was a prophet, He would
know who is touching Him and what kind of
woman she i s, that she’s a sinner.”’ Simon’s l ips
What we’re walking into
99why go
didn’t move, but his
whole body language
must have shown his
disgust at what was
happening. So, Jesus
breaks the si lence. I n fact
the passage says, ‘Jesus
answered him.’ He’d said
nothing, but his message was
clear. Simon was a rel igious man,
probably devoutly rel igious, but there
is no place for weeping sinners in his
rel igion.
His was a rel igion of the righteous, the rule-
keepers, and she’d broken al l the rules. Why
would Jesus give her the time of day?
‘Simon, I’ve something to say to you. Two
men owed money to a certain man. One 500
denarii, the other 50. He forgives both of
them. Simon, which of them will love him
the more?’
‘I suppose the one who had the bigger debt
cancelled.’
I t’s a simple question, but Simon’s reply seems
somewhat grudging. I s the point of the story beginning
to dawn on him? I f i t wasn’t, i t soon would. Jesus turns
towards the woman and asks Simon, ‘Do you see this
woman? ’
I don’t think he did. He didn’t see her as she was. He only
saw her as she had been – a prosti tute! He had pigeon-holed
1010 why go
her. Remember the response of the early Christians to
the conversion of Saul of Tarsus. ‘When Paul came to
Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they
were afraid of him, not believing that he was a
disciple.’ They couldn’t see him as he was, only
as he had been. As we walk into mission with
Jesus, may the Holy Spiri t open our eyes to see
the true glory of Jesus as Peter did and the
true condition of people which Simon so
fai led to see.
One more look at Jesus on mission. This time
He’s not deal ing with an individual but a
crowd. The record is in Luke 14. A large crowd
was travel l ing with Jesus (v 25). I t seems that
Jesus i s uncomfortable with the size of the crowd.
Would they be fol lowing Him i f they real ly knew
what He stood for? Have they any idea of the
implications for them and their fami l ies i f they
choose to become His disciples?
Jesus then makes three utterly
uncompromising statements about
discipleship which I imagine real ly thinned
out the crowd. F irst, ‘I f anyone comes to me
and doesn’t hate his father and mother, his
wi fe and chi ldren, his brothers and si sters,
yes, even his own l i fe, he cannot be
my disciple.’
The key i ssue in missions today i s
discipleship. How can we see those who are
born again by the Spiri t of God become 24-7
whole- l i fe fol lowers of Jesus? I t’s the key i ssue for the Church
in the West and for the Church in the Global South.
Walking in Love
1111why go
The key to the key i ssue i s love. I t’s only through love that we wi l l fol low in this way. No
other motivation wi l l lead to this total devotion. Jesus i s showing that because of who He
is, His devotion to us ful ly expressed at Calvary, He deserves and demands our love and
devotion. Disciples wi l l be constantly thinking of who Jesus i s – His glory and what He has
done and is doing for us. We wi l l break bread and take the cup of remembrance regularly.
I t’s a new devotion and passion which controls our l i fe. For this to take place, other loves
must die. ‘Anyone who doesn’t carry his cross and fol low me cannot be my disciple.’
The crowd would immediately know what Jesus was referring to with this statement. As
they went about their business in the ci ty, from time to time a hush would descend on the
people and al l eyes would turn towards someone carrying wood on their backs heading for
the place of execution. Everyone knew they were on a one-way journey. There was no
return. They were as good as dead.
To fol low Christ in this way of total devotion cal ls for death to the old way of l iving, the
old desires and motivations. ‘I f anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation.’ (2 Cor 5:17)
That means a new owner of our l ives – ‘Bought with a price, we are no longer our own.’ I n
verse 33 Jesus continues, ‘I n the same way any of you who does not give up everything he
has cannot be my disciple.’ Everything he has. Could Jesus real ly have said that? I ’l l save
you time. I ’ve had the Greek checked and i t doesn’t make the statement any easier. He is
Lord; he owns my l i fe, and everything I have i s his; mine only to steward or manage for
His glory. No wonder Jesus gives the teaching on counting the cost before commitment in
verses 28 – 32.
Two things we can apply from this teaching. Let us personal ly ref lect – am I committed to
24-7 whole- l i fe discipleship? Even short-term mission can be short-changing. ‘Oh, I ’l l
commit a month this summer.’ I often say to people considering short-term mission,
‘Don’t come short-term unless you are wi l l ing to commit your whole l i fe!’
The message of our mission must be this cal l to total devotion.
No truncating the Gospel. Let’s proclaim Jesus as Lord. What a
privi lege and a chal lenge to be on mission with
Jesus Christ.

Change fromthe Inside Out
One of the best things about Waterloo has been the opportunity to do
so many di fferent things. I 've worked in The Hub Coffee House,
worked in local schools, run kids clubs and art clubs, had lunch with
old people, dinner with homeless people, recorded music with young
people, and much, much more. Running the art club was one of my
highlights, especial ly seeing the young people grow and develop in
their abi l i ties and confidence over the year.
I miss walking around the area where I was guaranteed bumping into
someone I know, and the fact that on any one day I could be doing
about six di fferent things!
My hope for Waterloo is that people l iving there see i t as a great place
to l ive, and want to invest in their community. I hope that change can
come from the inside out, and that the Oasis community can work with
people to make that happen. My year in
Waterloo was chal lenging but taught me
to rejoice in smal l changes, and also to set
my hope in God's desire to transform the
big things too.
Oasis Volunteer
I spent the last year in the diverse
community around Waterloo in
London, based at church.co.uk. I worked
with a real cross-section of the
community, from older people at lunch
clubs, to young families at the mums

involved in gang culture.

‘Burkina… What? ’ I enquired.
My knowledge of French-
speaking Africa was
negligible, but the proposition
ticked al l the boxes of what I
was hoping to achieve in the
year and I answered the cal l.
From the moment I stepped
off the plane I was in an al ien
land. Even the moon was
di fferent to how I knew it at

its back as i f smi l ing to greet
me. ‘Welcome to

My ministry i s teaching ESL -
Engli sh as a Second Language

that the hunger to learn
Engli sh in the capital went far
beyond my expectations.
Engli sh i s a bridge to better
business communications and
a requirement to achieve an
international dream for many
people.
Over four years SI M’s Engli sh
classes have grown from 30
students meeting in a hired
church hal l, to a huge
operation with i ts own
ministry centre. Over 100
students pack into seven
classes and an extensive
waiting l i st of those i tching to

‘Burkina What?’
continues to grow at the SI M offi ce.
Every two hour class finishes with a
thirty minute Bible study. God has
opened the door wide to share his
good news with these people.
Twice a week, I have the
opportunity to bui ld friendships
with my students and tel l them
more about the wonderful God of
the universe and the price he paid
for us on the cross. What a
privi lege!
I ’ve found that Burkina Faso i s a
country rich with culture. From the
sandy Sahel of the north, to the lush
forests of the South, there i s much
diversi ty to seek and experience.
For the adventurous types, there are
waterfal ls to cl imb, sacred
crocodi les to si t on and elephant
safaris to search. I can say, so far,
I ’ve done two out of the three.
I ’d urge you not to dismiss a
country just because you
don’t know of i t. I ’m having
the time of my l i fe walking
with the Lord here in West
Africa.

2626 why go
I didn't know that my heart would
begin to break for that nation, and that
i t would matter so much when one
lady and her daughter stopped
attending a toddler group. I didn't
know how much I would care for the
lady who taught me to play the
Japanese koto: how I would hear her
laughter and long for her to know the
real joy of Christ in her l i fe. This
gl impse into how Jesus feels when He
looks at the world chal lenged me to
'walk in Japan' as Jesus would – He
shared with me His burden for the lost.
This burden motivated me as I joined a smal l church for
three and a half months and helped with many di fferent
outreach activi ties: Engl i sh lessons, gospel singing (incredibly popular in Japan),
chi ldren's work, as wel l as pastoral care and di fferent services. I don't speak Japanese,
but sti l l made some great friends. There was one lady who was always late to the
gospel singing and would stand by me, point to her ear and make me sing loudly at
her so she didn't lose the notes!
I also had a music project to be working on: the questions were, 'how can we best use
music to reach the Japanese people? What style of music wi l l help them to worship?
What wi l l be most accessible to someone coming into the church for the fi rst time?' I
haven't come back with al l the answers but God provided for me in an amazing way
so that I was able to use my gi ft of performing on the harp to touch people's hearts
and bring them into the church, where they could hear the good news of Jesus. I am
sti l l in awe of how God prepared al l this for me and led me on a journey I hadn't
even considered.
WEC I nternational
When I went to Japan, I wanted to explore how I could use the gifts I've been
given for God's kingdom. I had assumed this would mean playing my harp or
something similar. I never expected God would ask me to share in Jesus'
compassion for the lost and that two months into my time I would find myself
kneeling on the (really quite uncomfortable) church floor looking out onto the
beautiful garden, and weeping - weeping for God's glory in Japan like I never
thought I would.
