SHARON WRIGHT:

Good day, student viewers! This is Sharon Wright, with a breaking story about a community controversy. Three months ago, the people of Mapleville, Rhode Island, welcomed 45 families from the African nation of Sudan. Sudan is in the midst of a war, and these families came to the United States looking for peace. Although the community of Mapleville welcomed the families at first, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse. Can you tell us what’s going on, Reid?

REID MOORE:

Hello, Sharon! Things have heated up here in Mapleville after the local newspaper published a letter from Beatrice Land, a Mapleville parent. Mrs. Land argued that refugee students and families are not being included as much as they should be in the community. She says the newcomers are still dependent on Mapleville for survival in a new country. She wants the community to be more welcoming to the Sudanese.

SHARON: Interesting! But first, let’s start with a bit of history. How did the townspeople of Mapleville manage to bring the families all the way from the Sudan to the United States?

REID: Well, Mapleville residents had heard about the war in the Sudan and wanted to help. They completed the required immigration forms and sponsored the families. Everyone was so excited in the beginning! There was a lot of cheering and celebrating at the airport when the Sudanese arrived. For the first few weeks, the Sudanese were completely dependent on the townspeople. Mapleville residents helped them find housing, jobs, and schools for the children. People donated clothes and furniture. From what I have heard it was a true community effort.

SHARON: That was so nice. It sounds like things were going well. So, what happened that made Beatrice Land write a letter to the editor?

REID: Well, it seems that the town encountered new challenges with the families as time went on.

SHARON: Well, I’m sure it’s difficult to integrate new people who come from different cultures and speak different languages. What did Mrs. Land’s letter say?

REID: Her letter had to do with problems at Mapleville Elementary School. Last week a few parents complained to the principal that refugee students were being isolated and required to take separate English language classes.

SHARON: So Mrs. Land disagrees with isolating the newcomers into separate classrooms? What do other parents and teachers say?

REID: Some parents agree with Mrs. Land. They argue that keeping the new students separate in their own classrooms is one of the reasons it’s been so hard for the new students to learn English, make friends, and integrate into school and community activities. Other parents think that this is the best way to make sure the students from the Sudan learn English quickly and become less dependent on translators.

SHARON: I heard there was also a problem with the town festival? The Mapleville Festival is famous as one of the largest and most popular fairs in the state.

REID: Mrs. Land is also worried that the festival will conflict with a special religious holiday celebrated by the Sudanese families. Mrs. Land wants to move the festival’s date to respect the holiday and also make sure the new families have the opportunity to participate and enjoy the festival.

SHARON: Tough choice! It would be hard to move the festival. On the other hand, it would be sad for the Sudanese to miss the fair.

REID: Well, another group of Mapleville residents disagrees with Mrs. Land. They think it would be a disaster to move the fair because many tourists come from other states. They expect the festival to be at the same date every year, and they spend a lot of money when they visit Mapleville. Local businesses count on the festival for income. I can see why this is creating a controversy between groups with different opinions.

SHARON: Wow! I bet emotions are running high in Mapleville this week. I hope that they can figure out a way of working things out. Well, that’s all the time we have for today. Keep us posted, Reid, and a good day to you, student viewers. This is Sharon Wright, signing off!

Should everyone be included?

Line

1 Ekene: Anders, what happened at recess? You looked upset. Are you okay?

2 Anders: I’m upset about how people treat the new Sudanese students. No one sits with them at lunch or plays with them during recess. Most of them don’t even have class with us. They are isolated, and it makes me feel bad for them.

3 Yasuris: Really? I think we’ve done a good job of including them at school, especially considering how different they are from us. The teachers work really hard to integrate them in art and gym classes even though they don’t speak any English. Why is it taking them so long to learn?

4 Ekene: I think Yasuris is right. People at school and in the community have worked hard to integrate them. Just take a look at the soccer team. The students from Sudan are so good that most of them made the team.

5 Anders: That’s a good start, but what about the kids who aren’t good at soccer? What are we doing for them to make them feel welcome?

6 Ekene: I don’t think it’s really our fault that they sit by themselves in the school cafeteria. I think they sit together because they want to.

7 Nicole: I think we should do a better job making sure they’re not so isolated. We could invite them to have lunch, ask them to join our afterschool clubs, and help them practice their English.

8 Yasuris: That seems like a big challenge. How can we invite the new kids to do things if we don’t even know what they like to do? When they do speak English, they have really funny accents so it is pretty difficult to communicate with them.

9 Ekene: What if they’d rather be with other Sudanese kids who speak their language? I know if I were in school in the Sudan, and there were some American kids there, I’d want to speak English with them at recess.

10 Nicole: But we could definitely do more to make them feel like they belong here. After all, we haven’t had to leave our country because of a war! They’ve had a lot of adjusting to do. How would you feel if you were dependent on others? Maybe we could change things around for them because we want to, not because we’re required to do it.

Reader’s Theater continues on the next page.

Are our new classmates too isolated?

Anders, Yasuris, Ekene, and Nicole are at Mapleville Elementary School waiting for the bus to pick them up at the end of the school day.

11 Anders: I still think we should have a rule about including everybody. It should be a requirement! Just like bullying rules. Sometimes you have to force people to do the right thing.

12 Yasuris: Yikes! I’d hate to encounter you in a dark alley! When you run for class president, you should make this your campaign issue.

13 Ekene: The bus is here! See you all tomorrow! Bessalama!

14 Anders: Bessalama!

Characters’ Perspectives

Day 2

Should everyone be included?

What does each character think about refugee students not being included in school activities? Check the correct statement for each character. Find evidence in the Reader’s Theater to figure out what each character thinks.

Anders thinks that:

The Sudanese students should have their own school.

Everyone should be required to include the Sudanese in all school activities.

The school soccer team gets too much attention.

Yasuris thinks that:

It’s too hard to fully integrate people that are very different from us.

The Sudanese students should decide what they do in school.

All students should be required to learn the Sudanese language.

Do you think the new students should be included in regular classes? Discuss your perspective with a partner, and then write your answer below.

Yasuris, Anders, Ekene, and Nicole

Nicole thinks that:

Everyone should work harder to include the new students.

She should run for class president and draft new school rules.

There should be English classes for everybody, not just the Sudanese students.

Ekene thinks that:

Living in the Sudan is better than living in Mapleville.

Everyone should be required to include the new students in all activities.

The Sudanese students should have the choice to stick together.

Boston, 1636 Dear Journal,

This is the first chance I’ve had to write since we arrived in Boston. The sea journey was more difficult than I could have imagined! We had no fresh food for over two months, and there was a terrible storm that went on for days and made us fear for our lives. Only our prayers and our dreams of a new life in Massachusetts gave us comfort and hope.

Thankfully, I am beginning to adjust to this new land. I still miss my friends in England – especially Charity. Mercy, a girl whom I met recently, might become my friend. When we first arrived, the community welcomed us warmly. We live in a small cabin next to the Boston Common. I have helped my mother and father dig a garden so that we will have vegetables and grain. Now we also have chickens. People have shared their pumpkins with us. We eat pumpkin every week! I had never eaten it before. Our neighbors said that the Natives gave our community the seeds to grow them. But I have never encountered any Natives here. I asked Mercy, and she said she had never seen a Native either, even though she has lived here for several years. My father said, “We are at peace with them, and we trade with them to have furs for the winter. Still they are not allowed to enter the boundaries of our community. They do not share our beliefs.”

I do not understand why they cannot be integrated into our community if they helped the colony at first! I know they have different traditions and religion, but they live next to us and are of this land. Certainly we Puritans should understand how it feels to be excluded because of our beliefs.

Sadly, I have to go help my mother with the chores now. There is always so much that I am required to do! I will try to write later,

Hester

Colonists and Native Americans

The Native Americans helped the early New England colonists. Native Americans taught the colonists about local foods like corn, beans, pumpkins, and potatoes. Without these crops, the colonists would not have survived. The Native Americans were also important trading partners. They bought iron pots, blankets, metal-tipped arrows, and guns from the colonists in exchange for furs.

When the Puritans first encountered the Native Americans, they viewed them as skilled farmers who could teach them vital survival skills. But this view of the Native Americans changed. Puritans began to see them as “savages” or “heathens,” whose traditions seemed opposed to the teachings of the Bible. Soon the colonists created laws that required Native Americans to become “civilized” if they wanted to belong to the colony. Being “civilized” meant adopting the colonists’ English traditions and Puritan religious beliefs. As the colony became more independent, they became less dependent on the Native Americans. The colonists began to exclude them and treat them as outsiders rather than as friends.

Day 5

Should everyone be included? The Journey of the Mayflower

How long did it take Hester to sail from England to the Massachusetts colony?

English families sailed on wooden ships across the Atlantic to travel from England to the North American colonies. Crossing the Atlantic could be dangerous and unpredictable. Ship captains were dependent on the stars to guide their travels across the ocean. Colonists sometimes encountered hurricanes and bad weather. They could get lost at sea or run out of the food and drinking water required to survive the trip. This trip was long: It took about 8 to 10 weeks to travel from England to Massachusetts. But, depending on the winds, the trip could take as little as 38 days or as long as six months!

One of these ships, the Mayflower, carried 102 passengers from Southampton, England, to what we know today as Provincetown, Massachusetts. In 65 days, the Mayflower’s voyage covered approximately 2,700 miles.

We don’t know the exact route of the Mayflower. But we can use this information to get an estimate of how fast it sailed (how many miles it traveled in one day).

1. Which one of these expressions could be used to estimate how many miles the Mayflower traveled in one day? How do you know?

a) 2,700 x 65

b) 2,700 – 65

c) 2,700 ÷ 65

2. What was the Mayflower’s speed? (How many miles did it travel in one day?)

Possible route of the Mayflower’s journey from England to Massachusetts.

Day 6

Should everyone be included?Nicaraguan Deaf Community Creates a New Language

Before 1977, most deaf children in Nicaragua were kept at home. They were isolated from other deaf children and the school community. Even those who got a chance to go to school were not integrated into regular classes. This issue didn’t cause much controversy. At that time, many people thought the deaf children could not learn a language or school subjects like math or science.

Even though they didn’t go to school, deaf children figured out ways to communicate with their families. They used their hands to create messages. Each family invented its own hand signs, so the children were dependent on their parents for communication. These signs were helpful, but they were not the same as a language. A language is an entire system for communicating that is shared by a whole community.

Things changed dramatically when the Nicaraguan government opened up special schools for deaf students. They were integrated into deaf communities at school. This encounter among deaf students gave them an opportunity to develop shared signs. These signs became the Nicaraguan Sign Language.

Deaf children were not required to learn the new sign language. But they were very excited to speak to one another. In fact, many fourth and fifth graders worked hard to improve the sign language, introducing new signs and making the language richer. As a result, today the youngest children “speak” the language better than the deaf adults!

Deaf children were originally isolated because of their hearing loss. Once they found a community where they could belong, they were able to do amazing things.

Discussion questions:

1. Have you ever made up a different way to communicate with your friends or family?

2. How did having a community help the deaf children create a new language?

3. Do you think it is possible to have a strong community without a shared language? Why or why not?

Quick write: The deaf children were originally isolated from regular school communities. What do you think: Were there any good reasons to exclude them? Should they have been integrated? Talk to a partner and share your opinion. Look at the passage above to make your opinion stronger. Then write about it.

Day 7

Should everyone be included?Learning New Words by Making Connections

A good strategy for learning new words is to make connections. Connecting new words to words you already know helps you remember the new words better.

require • • disagreement

controversy • • combine

integrate • • force

SynonymsWords can be connected because they have the same or similar meanings. Words with the same meaning are called synonyms. For example, small and little are synonyms because they mean the same thing.

Can you match each focus word with its synonym?

AntonymsWords can also be connected because they have opposite meanings. Words with opposite meanings are called antonyms. Big and small are antonyms because each word means the opposite of the other.

Cognates Words are also connected because they come from the same root word or origin. Cognates are words in two different languages that look similar and mean the same thing.

What is the English cognate for the Spanish word matemáticas?

Can you match each focus word with its antonym?

Day 9

Should everyone be included?

We started the unit by talking about what’s happening with the Sudanese students at Mapleville Elementary School. Today we will discuss the main question of the unit, Should everyone be included in a community? Refer to the context of Mapleville in the debate. We will use a fishbowl format.

Outer Circle

Your task is to analyze how the debate is going. Although you’re not talking in the debate, your job is to pay close attention to what’s being said. Your teacher will assign you to one of the columns below, which will

describe the debate characteristic that you have to analyze.

Inner Circle Your task is to represent one of

the perspectives from the Reader’s Theater. It’s important for you to think

about what perspective you were assigned and the supporting reasons

for that perspective. You can use information from Days 1, 2, and 8

to keep your character’s perspective in mind.

Writing

Day 10

Should everyone be included?

Mrs. Land sent a letter to the editor of the Mapleville Chronicle to complain that Sudanese families were not being integrated into the community. Mr. Fabriccio, another Mapleville resident, wrote his own letter saying that Mrs. Land’s position was wrong.

Letters to the Editor

Read the letters carefully. Think about the issue and form your own opinion. Then, write a persuasive letter to the Mapleville Chronicle with your own opinion and suggestions to address this issue. Remember to:

a) Remind the reader what Mrs. Land and Mr. Fabriccio said (their positions)b) Write your own opinion about the issuec) Give reasons to support your opiniond) Include focus words to make your writing stronger

Dear Chronicle Editor,

I am very worried about our new Sudanese neighbors. When I have visited the schools, I have found that the

children are in separate classrooms and isolated in groups at lunch. I think separating these students into their

own classrooms keeps them from integrating into the school community. How can they get to know their new

classmates if they’re not together?

There is another problem that the Sudanese families face. Mapleville’s most important community event, the

Mapleville Festival, is scheduled during a very special religious holiday they celebrate. If we don’t change the

date, these families will not be able to participate. How can we allow our friends to be excluded from the most

important community event of the year?

They are dependent on us so we should be considerate. Our Sudanese friends require our help to succeed. I

hope that this letter helps community members pay more attention to these serious issues. Let’s be good

neighbors!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Land

Dear Chronicle Editor,

I was very troubled by Mrs. Land’s letter published a couple of days ago. I think our community has been—and continues to be—a very welcoming place for the new families. Some people think isolating Sudanese students into special classes is bad. But I think this is the best thing we can do to make sure they learn English quickly. I also think the students are integrating into the local schools very well. Just look at the soccer teams! We love having Sudanese stars represent our schools!

As a community, we have already worked hard to help them get here and get settled. But I don’t think we are required to change everything to help them succeed. Moving the Mapleville Festival is simply too expensive. The economy is bad, and we want this year’s festival to bring a lot of visitors to Mapleville. The Sudanese should consider adjusting their holiday traditions so they can participate in our important community event.
