Sweet Science The Incredible Edible Cell!  The Grade 7s have been learning about plant and animal cells in Natural Science and they were tasked to work in groups of three or four to create a cell model out of edible materials. They needed to plan beforehand, create a drawing of the cell with labels, and a table including each organelle, stating what it would be made out of and what its function is within the cell. Once complete, they were required to photograph and submit their entry. Once digitally received, the best part of all followed: they were allowed to DEVOUR their cell!

HEAD More Wet Weather! Once again we must thank you for your patience this week as we have been forced to cancel almost all sport. Looking ahead at next week things are not looking great. More rain is currently forecast all the way through to Wednesday! We will do what we can to accommodate activities in the Simpson Hall. We will also try to notify you as soon as possible if we need to change plans or cancel sport. On a positive note, our chess team has managed to continue regardless of the very wet and windy conditions! These tough competitors will be playing tonight and tomorrow in the Western Cape Top Schools Tournament regardless of the stormy wet conditions in the Cape showing our other sportsmen and women how it should be done! Well done, team! Sick children being collected from school. Please can you collect your child from the sick bay or office if they have to go home during the day. We are experiencing situations where children are being asked to meet their parents in the car park. We would like to know when children are being collected and this is made easier if they are collected from the office. Children to be collected to wait inside school property. On a similar note, we have spoken to the children about waiting inside the school property for parents at pick-up times. Class Parties and Sweets We are very happy to allow food into school for birthdays but please can these be as modest as possible. We are careful about diet and sugar intake at school and so to have cokes or sweets handed out is not great. Ice creams are also not practical. A cupcake or something similar seems to be the most common solution and is easier to manage. We prefer these to be consumed after lunch if possible. Thank you for your understanding in this regard. A bitterly cold morning, the grey heavy clouds threatening a downpour and then delivering! Probably the first Wednesday morning of the year where our usual banter and fun has been interrupted by the rain. A brave few borrowed the wheelbarrows

from somewhere. One quick journey was all we could do before the rain started to turn the newspapers into a more interesting papier maché consistency. The crew huddled together for warmth under the eaves of Shelters, being serenaded by the Junior Choir practice which was continuing with

The Somerset House Scrapbook A group of children are using the Club time on a Wednesday afternoon to work on the school scrapbook. As far as we know this is the first time that pupils have been actively involved (together with Staff members) in compiling this fun record of a school year. The scrapbooks are kept in the

s office) and are often perused by Past Pupils visiting the school. If anybody has any scrapbooking supplies that they would like to donate to this club please contact Tracey du Toit ([email protected]).

The 5c Towers will be constructed at Waterstone Shopping Centre on 1 September. Please bring all your old 5c coins to school. Each grade will have their own jar in which to keep their collection. Grade 1 Excel Flames! The Grade 1s made an Olympic flame using columns, rows and cells in Excel.

Artists of the Week I have been waiting with great anticipation for the Grade 6 artists to complete their artworks.

aspects of cutting and printing, the Grade 6 pupils had to be aware of aesthetic elements such as positive and negative space, line and shape. Their drawing and observation skills  are also very important in creating a strong and clear image. The Artists of the Week Hannah Chemaly and Daniel Janse are to be congratulated on their beautiful linocut prints.

News from the Bee Class The Bee Class have not been perturbed by the rains this week and have rather enjoyed the extra indoor playtime, working in the various stations.

Ava and Maia playing in the

breakfast in the home corner.

Samantha and Liam completing their artwork.

Goodbye to the 2012 Olympics The Grade 4M class learnt much about the history of the Ancient games and the revival of the Modern Olympics. Life lessons have also been learned and children saw that not everybody can win and those who always the winners. Disappointment has to be dealt with, even when people are super athletes! We look forward to the 2016 Rio games by which time they will be in High School. Sports News BRONZE MEDALS FOR OUR U9 CHESS PLAYERS Our U9 Chess players recently took part in the WP Top Schools Tournament where they received Bronze Medals. As a result, they have been invited to play at the Western Cape Top Schools Tournament this weekend. Josh Cox, Arden Scholtz, Keanu Coetzer, Sam Chemaly, Jordan Heymans and Nic Cilliers will play two rounds on Friday evening at the Western Cape Sports School in Kuilsriver, followed by another 3 rounds on Saturday. This is similar to an inter-provincial tournament as they will be playing against the top U9 school teams from the

Boland and South Western District areas. Should they qualify, they will next participate at the South African Championships which take place from 30 September 3 October. Special thanks to Mr Taylor for the wonderful job he does with our chess players. We wish our boys the very best!

ALIKI AND SHANNON EARN THEIR WESTERN CAPE COLOURS Congratulations to Aliki Argyropoulos and Shannon Morgan-Wilson who participated at the Western Cape Horse Riding Championships in George this past weekend. Both Aliki and Shannon rode beautifully and with their results, earned themselves a place in the Western Cape Team to participate at the SANESA Nationals which will take place in Johannesburg from 21 24 September. Congratulations girls - what a wonderful achievement! We wish Aliki on Persian Rose and Shannon on Full Of Gold the best of luck! INTRA-REGIONAL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT This past weekend a number of our hockey players represented the Helderberg Zone as well as the WP Invitational Team at an Intra-Regional Hockey Tournament which was held in Grahamstown. Our Somerset House pupils received a number of compliments for the way they played the game both on and off the field. We are always proud to receive news like this. Participating districts included teams from Western Province, Boland, South Western Districts, Border and Eastern Province. Congratulations to Kelly Landon, Kiera van Eeden and Zac Fagan, whose WP Invitational Teams won the overall tournament. Rozie Trafford and Rochelle Roos, representing the Helderberg Zonal Team, were placed 5th overall, while Luke Stephens,

th overall. Unfortunately a number of our pupils have been off sick this week and we were therefore not able to take a photo. Congratulations to all our players.
