Shout Out from Hawfields Middle Karla Robbins, 8th Grade Social Studies
Hawfields' own Melanie Dellinger has written a book titled The Mental which is currently available on Amazon.com! Melanie will be present for a book signing at Holly Hill Mall 6:30 to 8:30 inside The Art Gallery (right outside of Sears). Books are $12. This is an AWESOME accomplishment!! CONGRATULATIONS Melanie we are SO VERY PROUD of you!!!! How did Melanie get started writing? In the artist’s own words………. “In the sixth grade, I remember sitting in the back of math class, specifically looking out of the window. My teacher, Mrs. Wall, started talking about Linear equations and how the graphs of the lines were in a straight line, and the increase of decrease was the same. Then we started talking about how that equation would never work on humans, because all humans were different. Mrs. Wall said it was a human error for anyone to be the same. I thought, well, why can't people be the same? I pulled out a bright green notebook and started writing. At first it was really hard to get in sync with the characters, because they had been very new. It made me feel a little uneasy, but after sitting down and writing the first rough draft in the sixth grade, I feel like they're a part of me, almost stitched into my soul. I finished it in sixth grade, took a break of writing The mental in the beginning of seventh grade to write another story and plan a story I've been working on since fourth grade, and by March of this year, I decided to completely rewrite it, with more improved characters. My writing has greatly evolved since then. I've always wanted to be a writer since second grade. In August (of 2015) I took a writing workshop lead by a man named Wayne Drumheller. The Mental was almost finished without edits or revisions, and I decided to ask him to critique the first two chapters of it. He said he wanted to read more and that he really liked it, and pretty soon we were talking about publishing. He guided us through the process and I had to finish the story, revise, spend hours with my grandmother editing, and he showed us the way through Amazon.com and CreateSpace. This whole experience has been amazing, and I think the characters are excited as well. The best part about it was writing, and having the characters with me for two and a half years, growing and evolving into the young men and women that they are along with my writing.”

Mr. Pike’s book is about a group of musicians who are traveling from Florida to the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw for their next show. The animal characters were thoughtfully determined by the author and illustrator. They wanted to use animals that would be found in our area, Southeastern, United States. Many of the events in the story were actual occurrences from Bill Pike’s life, while other events were drawn from his imagination. The author kept the students fully engaged by projecting the illustrations and words of the text on the smartboard as he read from his book. The content of the book included many landmarks of our area that are familiar to the students which really increased their interest level!

Our Smith Seabees were buzzing with acts of kindness in November! As a school, we focused on kindness for the month of November because World Kindness Day is November 13 and one of our behavioral expectations is to "Inspire Others." During monthly classroom guidance lessons Ms. Candice Lewis, guidance counselor, focused on kindness. The kindness wall was a representation of kind acts that our students and staff completed during the month of November. When staff or students found an act of kindness being displayed, they wrote the act and the name of the person showing that kindness on a Post-It note and stuck it on the wall. We collected over 215 kind acts! What a wonderful way to inspire others! Seabees are bee-ing KIND to one another!

Shout Out from Newlin Elementary Rachel Sherrill, Second Grade
One day my class was reading a story about a girl in Tanzania. The students saw pictures of girls with water jugs on their heads and it automatically prompted questions. "Why are they carrying that on their heads?", "Why are they getting water?", "Don't they have water in their house?", and many more questions followed that. When the students learned that some children can't attend school, get sick, and sometimes die from unclean water they have to collect, the next question was from a serious little girl..."What can we do to help?".
The class did some research and found The Water Project. Our class made posters, told their family and friends, made a video and showed the school, collected money, counted the money, and wrote thank you cards to each and every class that participated.
Many staff, teachers, and students at our school participated by donating change and spreading the word about this issue. In a little over a month, these students raised over $800 to put towards this important cause.
They are true leaders i n our community!

Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian
The stage in the gym of Smith Elementary became a mall of sorts as the annual Christmas Cove took place this year! Children were given envelopes on which to put the names of individuals for which they would like to buy gifts. Then the parents put money in the envelopes so that the children could purchase gifts for the people on their lists. The gifts ranged in price from $1 to $5. There were even parent volunteers to help with wrapping so the gifts could be kept a secret until Christmas! For those students who needed help financially, some parents made donations so every child would be able to buy something.
This has become a very popular tradition at Smith. The children are so proud to be able to have gifts for their loved ones.
Thanks to PTO parent Sharon Holt for organizing the event and to all of the parents and grandparents for helping with wrapping and gift selection!
