Looks like the book. Works like the book. It’s not the book.

Say hello to the new epriser. It’s each of our Price Guide books (Plumbing & Heating, Luxury Plumbing, Waterworks, HVAC and Electrical) on your computer.

epriser offers the practicality of the Allpriser book format, but works at the speed of your computer. On-screen pages look just like your Allpriser book pages. And all price and product updates are automatic – your computer downloads them as we publish them. For you and your crew, that means no pages to file or lose.

Like the book, you can locate items/prices by section and page heading and epriser can be shared like the book between users and locations. Unlike the book, epriser instantly searches for items through all page headings, regardless of section, or by keyword to show all pages where that keyword appears.

It’s faster, better, and pretty much mistake-proof – making it easier for you to be all of those things, too.

Wednesday, May 5thArc Flash Safety Overview

Arc fl ash safety is rapidly increasing in prominence in Canada. Knowledge of arc fl ash haz-

ards increases the ability to work safely. Making workplaces safer reduces supervisory legal

liabilities.

You will see why knowledge of arc fl ash hazards is crucial to making your workplace safer.

Methods of protection available for improving workplace safety will be discussed, as well as

steps to be taken to move ahead with the management of arc fl ash risks.

Questions are encouraged.

ARTHUR GUNN has been a principal of A.W. Gunn Engineering since 1989, which provides

design and consulting services to industry in Atlantic Canada. He has over 35 years of experi-

ence in designing heavy industrial power distribution systems, process control and electrical

equipment manufacturing. His recent experience includes arc fl ash analysis and mitigation

work for a variety of client installations.

National Plumbing Code 2010—Major Changes

Raman Chauhan, P.Eng., will provide seminar attendees with the straight facts on upcoming

changes to the National Plumbing Code. Included will be details on major changes for plumb-

ing and a review of defi nitions for mechanically vented appliances.

RAMAN CHAUHAN, P.ENG., has been involved in maintaining and updating the National

Building Code of Canada and the National Plumbing Code of Canada for more than 24 years

as a Technical Advisor with the National Research Council of Canada. He retired from NRC

in July 2009.

Design Build—Executing the Project (based on the ASHRAE Design-Build Survival Guide)

The growing popularity of design-build provides businesses with a unique opportunity to re-

position their fi rms in a changing marketplace. With these opportunities come unique chal-

lenges. For many fi rms, the D-B role is a new one, which results in changes in their ‘custom

and practice’, and requires a shift in focus to execute projects smoothly.

This segment will address some of the ideas, issues and concerns that arise in the D-B ex-

ecution model that differ from traditional design or construction, and differ for the owner, too.

Scope, quality, cost and schedule control are key items that will be addressed in the program.

The value of ‘selling’ the service is only maintained when there is also value in the delivery.

E. MITCHELL SWANN, P. ENG., LEED AP, is with MDC Systems of Paoli, Phil., and possesses

over 20 years of experience in the areas of management, engineering and construction for an

array of clients in diverse industries in the U.S.A. and abroad. He has authored several articles

on issues in professional practice, including “Standard of Care and Consequential Damages”,

and is a co-author of “ASHRAE Survival Guide to Design\Build”. Swann is well-versed in the

various types of project execution approaches—from traditional bid-spec to design-build—and

has prepared proposals and scope documents for all types of projects.

The Fundy Tidal Project

The Bay of Fundy tides

have long been seen as

one of the world’s larg-

est untapped sources

of renewable energy. In

early 2008, the Nova

Scotia Government se-

lected Minas Basin Pulp

and Power of Hantsport,

N.S., to develop North

America's fi rst in-stream

tidal energy demonstra-

tion facility. Since then,

Minas has identifi ed a

site in the Minas Passage

and, in September 2009,

obtained environmental permitting to proceed with the installation of submarine cables and

tidal energy generators.

Don't miss this exciting presentation!

JOHN WOODS is vice-president, energy development at Minas, and serves as chair of the Fun-

dy Ocean Research Centre for Energy. His discussion of the Fundy Tidal Project will include its

progress to-date, challenges to be overcome in working in extreme tidal races, technologies to

be deployed, the potential for energy extraction, and what success will mean to Canada.

Thursday, May 6thDesign-Build for Green Buildings—Integrated Delivery of an Integrated Idea

Green design and construction is leading the charge of new design approaches in almost every

section of the building industry. The successful execution of a green building project (or, more

specifi cally, a LEED-Certifi ed project) entails a more integrated approach throughout both the

design and construction processes.

A key component of green design is the merging of the architectural and engineering design

effort to yield a more holistic design. The better the team coordination, the greater the op-

portunities to deliver a high-performance building.

Another movement in the industry is in project delivery. Design-build and partnering have

become common project execution techniques—even in public sector projects. D-B seeks to

gain time and cost effi ciencies by blurring the lines between design and construction. Given

that both philosophies—green buildings and D-B—have the integration of services at their

core, it is only natural that the two would also merge in the delivery of projects.

This program will highlight some of the key ideas, elements and issues that are inherent in

both approaches, and where and how they interface on a project.

Demystifying LED—the Truth and Myths of LED Lighting

The future of LED lighting makes headlines on an almost daily basis; the promise of solid

state lighting (SSL) includes energy effi ciency, ultra-long life, small size, dimmability and any

choice of colour.

Unfortunately, LED component and fi xture manufactures often provide misleading perfor-

mance data about their products, causing confusion in the traditional lighting market. Con-

sequently, much LED media has become a victim of hype, often leaving LED products with a

bad reputation.

Fortunately, organizations and government have brought order to chaos, and sound methods

for evaluating SSL products are emerging. This seminar will help you understand the real

advantages and the limitations of LED lighting.

Martyn Timmings, LC, is senior manager, market development, with Philips–Canlyte. He is

responsible for Philips Color Kinetics product management in Canada; he has an extensive

background in lighting application and training, having managed Canlyte’s Lighting Concept

Centre for more than 20 years. Timmings actively participates in volunteer committee work

within CSA, NRCan, NRC and others. In addition, he is currently participating in the technical

review of IES’s upcoming “Lighting Handbook, 10th Edition”.

A SHORT HISTORYMoncton was incorporated as a Town in 1855 when shipbuilding was the main in-dustry. However, the advent of steam and iron ships soon brought the prosperity to an end, and Moncton reverted to village status in 1862. Almost 10 years later, Moncton became the Atlantic Regional Headquarters for the Intercolonial Railway and, in 1875, became a Town once more. This revival explains the civic motto, Re-

surgo, which means “I rise again”. Monc-ton became a City on April 23, 1890.

(We’ve tried to list only those things that are available around the time of MEET 2010, but check ahead to be on the safe side.)

river that bends like a bow”). The area was originally inhabited by the Mi’kmaq and, later, by Acadian pioneers. The nomadic Mi’kmaq stayed along the river during the summer, as they remained mobile and did not have permanent settlements (though they inhabited distinct areas annually). The Acadian settlers set out reclaiming the land from the water by diking the land for use in agri-culture. This Acadian settlement was origi-nally known as “Le Coude” (Bore Park now stands on this site.) The community was named Monckton in honour of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Monckton, who captured Fort Beauséjour in 1755, marking the start of the Deportation of the Acadians. In 1766, Captain Hall piloted a ship, carrying a group of settlers from Pennsyl-vania, into what is now known as Hall’s

Creek. The families that were on the ship were Heinrick Stief (Steeves), Jacob Treitz (Trites), Matthias Somers, Jacob Reicker (Ricker), Charles Jones, George Wortman,

Micheal Lutz (Lutes) and George Copple; as can be seen on the plaque mounted at the mouth of Hall’s Creek. These settlers and the return-ing Acadians soon came to befriend each other and de-

velop the area. The Acadians return to the Moncton area at this time was extremely helpful in teaching the Pennsylvanian set-tlers how to survive the harsh winter with little supplies. While the Petitcodiac was very danger-ous to navigate due to the high tides and narrow channel, the 1830’s nevertheless saw the shipping trade become a ma-jor economic booster. In 1841, wharves were built along the river. Originally, trade

was primarily done by the barter system (though fi shing still played a major role in the economy at the time). The plenti-ful shad could be procured directly off the ships at the wharves right at the riverfront. Shipbuilding and the sea trade proved to be a major industry in the City of Monc-ton and surrounding communities. Build-ing materials were in great supply and easily acquired from the area. Joseph Salter had an immense shipbuilding yard. Almost all vessels were built for owners in England and, thus, did not return to North America. Salter later became the fi rst mayor. Moncton was a town from 1855 to 1862, losing its status after the principle industry—the Salter Shipyards—went bankrupt. The infl ux of new industry with the railroad revitalized the community. Many local citizens developed industry in the budding distribution centre of the Atlantic region. Frederick Sumner had a

street railway and the Harris brothers cre-ated a sugar refi nery and a cotton factory. Other factories and industries soon fol-lowed. Before the industrial boom, most businesses were blacksmiths, sawmills and carriage production, as well as sparse farms. Industrial development continued into the 1870s. The European and North American Railways were absorbed by the Intercontinental Railways (ICR). The ICR was the forerunner of the Canadian Na-tional Railway (CNR). By 1876, the ICR railway had established headquarters Moncton, being the rail link between Hali-fax and Montreal. At one time, the railway employed 3000 people locally. Moncton reincorporated in 1875 with a new Latin motto, Resurgo. In 1876, a copy-ist working at the provincial legislature inad-vertently dropped the ‘k’ in Moncton. After that incident, the community assumed its

own identity. It sought out City status in 1890, and got it April 23, 1890. Its coat of arms illustrates the agri-cultural, industrial and rail-way heritage, along with the

world-famous Tidal Bore. It proudly bears the Latin motto below the shield above the banner displaying its name. In 1883, telephone service arrived in Moncton, along with the NBTel Company that now has its offi ce and tower on Alma Street. The railway continued to grow and play a role in Moncton. With a focus on transportation, Fred Breau started a bus service in 1922. It was later to become the city’s own Codiac Transit Bus service. The railway still grew with new CNR round-house being completed with an 85-ft turn-table capable of housing 80 locomotives. A new airport arrived in 1937. In 1939, Canada was at war again. Moncton hosted

the largest number of air force personnel during the fi rst year of war with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Monc-ton became a fl ying school for the over-seas effort hosting as many as 15,000 air-men in several bases throughout the area at one time. In 1963, the Université de Moncton (U de M) was built in the city, and a teacher’s college was added to the campus. Monc-ton’s growth continued into the 1970s with the creation of a second hospital, the George Dumont Hospital being erected near the U de M. Today, Moncton is not only a leader in information technology to the Maritimes and the world, but also provides excellent tourism, quality manufacturing, incredible variety in shopping and boasts a friendly, well-educated bilingual population. Monc-ton is rated as one of the fastest-growing cities in North America.

Through feedback from Thermostats, the House Control can lower supply water temperatures to compensate for heat gains caused by the sun or occupant activities. Lower water temperatures save even more when operating condensing boilers that are at their highest efficiency when return temperatures are low.
