The Old Print Gallery is celebrating maps in 2014, with a mini exhibit of antiqueAmerican maps displayed on our gallery walls. We selected eight maps from ourcollection, starting with the influential Munster 1588 map Americae sive Noi Orbis

Nova Descriptio, and ending with Mitchell’s 1861 Military Map of the United States. Galleryfriends are invited to stop by and see “snapshots” of our great country over time, throughwars and conflict as well as periods of prodigious exploration and expansion, as told by maps. These maps are presented on pages 4 through 11 .

Our show, runs February 21 through April 5, showcasing the long legacy ofprintmakers who specialize in and focus on etching as a way of image making. As the showpulls from over a century of creative expression, viewers will be fascinated by the myriad ofways an artist can use an etched line to create tone, atmosphere, and detail. The show alsohighlights new technical advances in etching, including multi-plate color etchings andexperimental solar plate etchings.

Highlights include meticulously etched architectural views by John Taylor Arms, direct andintimate portraits by Isabel Bishop and Nicholas Vagenas, and velvety and dense lines foundin works by Peter Milton and Otto Kuhler. To view all of the works in the show, visit ourwebsite: www.oldprintgallery.com.

In conjunction with our etching event, we are devoting pages 14 through 24 to thisprintmaking technique, starting with a 16th century example and continuing to recent worksby living artists.

4. AMERICAE SIVE NOVI ORBIS, NOVA DESCRIPTO. Sebastain Munster. Publishedby Sebastain Petri, Basel. Woodcut, 1588. This influential woodcut map from Munster’sCosmographia replaced the earlier and highly speculative Munster map of 1540. Cartographi-cally based on Ortelius’ 1570 map, this map features a typical Ortelian treatment of thewestern coastline of North America. Place names like Quivera, Anian, and Tolm are artfullyengraved in the Northern continent, along with river ways and mountain ranges, includingthe Sierra Nevada Mountains. The map shows an oversized southwestern coastline of SouthAmerica, sometimes referred to as the “Chilean bulge”. A massive southern continent,Meridies Tierra del Fuego, sits at the bottom of the map. This map was issued unchangedfrom 1588 through 1628. A secondary title in German appears above the map, "Die newenInseln so hinder Hispania Gegen Orient bey dem Landt Indie Gelegen". Good conditionwith centerfold repair; modern hand color. #42556.3 $2,800.

5. AMERICA. Jodocus Hondius. Published by J. Hondius, Amsterdam. Copper engraving,c.1606. French issue, 1630 (Phillips, Atlases, 441, #160). Hondius engraved this map for hisfirst edition of Gerard Mercator’s atlas. It was issued in his atlases until 1630. The enlargedNorth American continent includes many errors, notably the northeast portion in the currentU.S., which is badly distorted, and an oddly protruding Virginia coastline. It does have a moreaccurate depiction of the southwest coast of South America. Various scenes which were takenfrom the earlier volumes of de Bry’s Grand Voyages adorn this map. The inset in the lower leftmargin is an intriguing Brazilian native scene, illustrating the method used to make a localbeverage. Good condition save repair near lower centerfold. Black and white. #10432.1$7,500.

6. AMERICA WITH THOSE KNOWN PARTS IN THAT UNKNOWN WORLDEBOTH PEOPLE AND MANNER OF BUILDINGS DISCRIBED AND INLARGED BYI.S. ANO. 1626. John Speed. Published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell, London.Copper plate engraving, 1626 (1676.) This is a quite decorative and highly desirable map ofthe Americas. It appeared in Speed's atlas Prospect of the Most Formed Parts of the World, thefirst English world atlas, although the copperplates were engraved by Abraham Goos inAmsterdam, the center of the European map trade. This was the first map published in anatlas that depicted California not as a peninsula, but as an island, a cartographic misconcep-tion that endured for nearly 100 years. The map has a fairly accurate rending of the EastCoast, especially between Chesapeake Bay and Cape Cod. Many English colonies appear onthe map, including Plymouth in the northeast and Iames Citti in Virginia. The northwestcoastline is very faint. Surrounding this map on two sides are images of indigenous peoplesfound from Greenland to the Straits of Magellan. The figures on the left represent nativesfrom the north, while figures on the right side are southern natives. Eight town views appearon top. Although the map depicts the English presence in North America, surprisingly noneof the town views are English colonies. Rather, they show important early views of Havana,St. Domingo, and Rio, among others. An inset map shows Greenland, Baffin's Bay andIceland. On the verso is a two-page English text "The Description of America". Fourth stateof four. Image size 15 1/8 x 20" (385 x 506 mm) plus narrow margins. Good condition savefor tear in lower portion of image just left of the centerfold. Early twentieth century handcoloring. #43658.1 $7,500.

7. ACCURATA DELINEATIO CELEBERRIMAE REGIONIS LUDOVICIANAE VELGALLIEE LOUISIANE OL CANADAE ET FLORIDAE ADPELLATIONE IN SEP-TEMTRIONALI AMERICA . . . MISSISSIPPI VEL ST. LOUIS. Matthew Seutter.Published by Matthew Seutter, Augsburg. Copper plate engraving with original hand color,c.1730. This map shows North America as known in the early 18th century, with the Englishcolonies along the Atlantic seaboard, a large Louisiana to the south, and Canada with NewFrance taking up the northern tier. At upper left is a large inset of the Gulf coast from theMississippi delta to Cap St. Blaise. The map prominently features the Mississippi River andGreat Lakes. This map has an elaborately engraved title cartouche, which depicts anallegorical scene of the Mississippi Bubble, a rather poor investment scheme by John Law todevelop French Louisiana. The cherubs floating above the cartouche are shown issuing stockfor Law’s trading company, while a female personification of the Mississippi River pours outriches and gold to frenzied buyers on her left. To her right, forlorn investors mourn theirlosses and stab themselves, while cherubs below blow bubbles, surrounded by worthlessstocks. Good condition, save several faint foxing marks in right margin and brown stain inlower right of image. #19754.3 $2,950.

10. CHARTE UBER DIE VEREINIGTEN STAATEN VON NORD-AMERICA. Chris-toph Fembo. Copper plate engraving, 1818. This unusual map was first issued by Gussefeld/ Homann Heirs of Nuremburg in 1784, showing the newly formed United States under thetitle "Charte über die XIII verinigte Staaten von Nord-America." Virginia is engraved with an almost straight north to south western border, andKentucky and Ohio are wedge shaped. Indiana and Illinois are placed approximately 100miles to the west of where they should be. Illinois does not touch Lake Michigan. Mississippiis shown as a territory, despite gaining statehood in December of 1817. A very scarce map.Image size 17 5/8 x 22 3/4" (447 x 575 mm) plus margins. Good condition. 11. MITCHELL'S MILITARY MAP OF THE UNITED STATES, SHOWING FORTS,&C. WITH SEPARATE MAPS OF STATES, VICINITIES OF CITIES &C. S. AugustusMitchell. Published by S.A. Mitchell Jr. 31 S. 6th St., Philadelphia. Stone engraving, 1861.A scarce separately issued broadside map produced at the beginning of the American CivilWar. This map shows the new territories that were made after southern states seceded. Asthe trans-Mississippi region developed during the 1850s, there was a call to break up the verylarge territories into smaller ones. However, every newly created territory had an impact onthe power struggle in Congress over the issue of slavery, so between 1854, with its Kansas-Nebraska Act, and 1860, no new territories were created. After secession, the northernersin Congress were able to act quickly and create three new territories: a large DakotaTerritory, Territory of Utah, and Colorado Territory. Another feature of this map is thedepiction of a never-existing horizontal border between the free territory of New Mexico andslave territory of Arizona. The region was sometimes called Arizona before 1863, despite thefact it was still part of the Territory of New Mexico until 1912. Two large inset maps appearat the bottom, “County map of Virginia, and North Carolina” and “County map ofPennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.” Smaller inset maps show HamptonRoads, Washington, D.C., Pensacola Bay, Charleston Harbor, New Orleans, Louisiana,Baltimore and Richmond. Image size 22 3/4 x 25 1/4" (64.1 x 57.8 cm) plus margins. Goodcondition, save for several short tears along sheet edges and fold lines. Small stain in uppertitle. Backed on rice paper. #79674.1 $2,500.
