Page 1/ Foreword

Welsh App ShowcaseIt is my great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s CEMAS Welsh App Showcase.

The event was set up four years ago as a vehicle to promote new and innovative apps being developed by companies in Wales. Since the event’s inception it has proved extremely popular with hundreds of attendees at last year’s event, along with the high numbers of companies exhibiting.

The event demonstrates the huge talent pool within the mobile and digital economy in Wales who will showcase some fantastic apps and systems.

The event will also play host to a number of support agencies from Wales who offer awareness of funding available to companies and individuals looking for mobile app and business support advice.

We host informative seminars to support small and medium enterprises and those wishing to start up a company or develop a new app.

I welcome you to the Welsh App Showcase 2014 and hope it inspires you to get involved with the exciting mobile and digital economy in Wales.

Professor Khalid Al-Begain Director of CEMAS

CEMAS

The Centre of Excellence in Mobile Applications and Services (CEMAS) is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is established at the University of South Wales.

We make apps, in fact, we make great apps with some great companies – and we’re all really proud of this. As part of our offering, we have a business support programme that can work with SMEs in the Convergence area of Wales by helping them develop, test and find a route to market for their mobile application product. CEMAS is unique in that we are able to minimise the initial risks to businesses that are associated with developing a mobile application through a fully funded app development programme available to eligible SMEs in Wales.

The CEMAS team can help Welsh SMEs and start-up companies develop their app idea on a number of platforms including iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone.

CEMAS have set up the Mobile Innovation Network (MINe) which gives like-minded companies across the UK as well as international players within the mobile and telecommunications sector opportunities to network, to foster new ideas and find commercial opportunities through mutual collaboration.

Supporting Welsh businesses to reduce the initial risk associated with developing new mobile applications and services.

“Re-building our cultural heritage for Generation Xbox.”

Due to rapidly developing digital technologies, our children’s learning habits are evolving dramatically. YouTube tutorials, video conferencing, mobile devices and most importantly, video games, should be embraced as viable, engaging educational tools, instead of the anti-social stigma they currently receive.

Using my new game, “IRON” as a case study, we will challenge Mark Prenskys’ notion of “Digital Natives being taught by Digital Immigrants” as I endeavour to teach the youth of my home-town about their rich, cultural heritage via the medium of a video game.

Gareth is Award Leader BA (Hons) Games Enterprise at the University of South Wales and Owner and Creative Director; Irontown Interactive.

With 15 years experience working as a TV and Video-games Animator and VFX artist, for the likes of Mattel, Hasbro and the BBC as well as Lecturer on the renowned, Skillset accredited, Computer Animation course at the University of Glamorgan. Recently becoming an Award-Winning Entrepreneur and Award Leader for the new Games Enterprise course at USW, Gareth has a unique insight into the development and practice of utilising video games and interactive digital media as an innovative new educational tool.

John is the Co-Founder and CCO of GameSparks and has been working in the media/games industry for nearly 20 years.

Having previously worked with household names such as Sky, BBC, EA and Disney, John moved on to set up GameSparks early in 2013 with Co-Founders Griffin Parry from BSkyB and Gabriel Page of ioko.

GameSparks is a cloud-based platform for mobile game developers to help them create games more quickly and for less money.

Post launch, the game mechanics we provide as-a-service are designed to leverage virality, increase retention and drive new revenues. All games will one day run in the Cloud.

Nearly all mobile games will embrace freemium and be delivered as a service implying the need to evolve over time. This evolution places new challenges on games developers and GameSparks’ sole purpose is to help address this and make it easier for developers to be successful.
