News From Your Potentate

This first quarter has absolutely flown by! Our next quarter looks to be filled with fund raisers, parades, spring ceremonial and many other events and get-togethers.

Our Pipes & Drums had their multiple St. Patrick’s bar run fund rais-ers for the 2017 Circus. Their week kicked off Friday evening in Blue Springs at Dirty Harry’s, followed by Side Pockets and 4 other local wa-tering holes. Saturday they were in Westport, then off to lead the Lee’s Summit Emerald parade. It didn’t stop there! Sunday was the Martin City parade, with the season wrapping up on St. Patrick’s day itself, with the KC St. Patrick’s Day Parade and multiple other stops & performances. Also, our Directors Staff attended the Leavenworth St. Pat-rick’s Day parade as the have been doing for many years.

The Provost had their annual Chili cook off. Lots of great chili, music, and fun. Congratulations to the winners: first place was Transporters with Big Hanks (Hormel) Chili; second place was Ambassa-dors with Jeremy’s (Texas style Chili) and third place was Divan with Hooper’s (Fire in the hole Chili).

I just got back for the 2017 Potentate’s Ball at Harrah’s Casino. What a great job our Aides did again. Also a very special Thank You to Sara and Aaron Habben for helping host this wonder-ful event. I could not be more proud of having the honor of serving as the 2017 Potentate for the Kansas City Ararat Shrine.

If you don’t have our member’s only app on your smart phones, you need to download it. The app has all the info you need to keep in the loop. This app can answer many questions you may have as well as keep you up to date with our events. In your phone’s marketplace or app store, search for “Ararat Shrine - Kansas City.” The icon will be an Ararat fez.

April is our swap meet month, along with many other things to do–so check your calendars and come join us at the events. On the business side of thing we now have our Shrine center on the mar-ket. There is a fantastic YouTube video you can see that will help us market our building. Negotiations are still ongoing with the City of Independence and the Silverstein Arena for Circus and the possibility of other events and opportunities.

The Phantoms indoor football team has kicked off their 2017 season and is working with us. They are letting us sell gun raffle tickets, have a membership booth, and be the recipient of the 50/50 drawing. This drawing raised $500 for our Circus at the home opener! If you are interested in getting involved with this work in progress, let us know. They will be having 5 more home games...come join the excitement!

Hope to see you all very soon!! Best Regards

Shriners Hospitals for Children Brings Critically Injured Guatemalan Children to United States for Treatment(Monday, March 13, 2017)

Shriners Hospitals worked with Guatemalan and U.S. officials to arrange transport to their pediatric burn hospitals

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has admitted seven children in critical condition with burn injuries suffered in the March 8 children’s shelter fire in Guatemala. The children have been transported to the Boston and Galveston Shriners Hospitals pediatric burn centers.

Critically burned patients are typically placed in pediatric intensive care units due to the severity of their injuries. Multidisciplinary teams at each location will provide all aspects of burn care, which could include surgery, treatment, rehabilitation and psychological support.

Within 24 hours of the disaster, Shriners Hospitals deployed an emergency medical team to Guatemala to provide onsite evaluation and care. The team worked with Guatemalan and U.S. officials to secure approval to transfer those who required further treatment at Shriners Hospitals in the United States. A second team has been sent to Guatemala to provide additional support. Shriners Hospitals for Children stands ready to help other Guatemalan children if needed.

“Shriners Hospitals is uniquely prepared to respond to a tragedy of this proportion, having specialized pediatric burn hosptials across the country,” said Chris Smith, chairman of the Board of Directors, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “We have a deep history of mobilizing to respond to tragedies across the globe and have committed to help these children.”

Since entering the field in the 1960s, Shriners Hospitals for Children has contributed to most of the significant advancements in acute and reconstructive pediatric burn care. Shriners Hospitals is often sought out for complex domestic and international cases.

Since 1922, Shriners Hospitals for Children has provided pediatric specialty care to chil-dren with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Shriners Hospitals has treated more than 1.3 million children from more than 180 countries over the last 95 years.

The Importance of Lawn Mower Safety

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to helping keep kids safe, and injury-free.

Although they may seem like a common household tool, lawn mowers are one of the most dangerous items in our homes. Thousands of people are hurt while using lawnmowers each year – these injuries can include deep cuts;

loss of fingers, toes, and even limbs; burns and broken bones. However, many lawn mower-related injuries can be prevented by following some safety guidelines.

OSOCT16TIOL

Keep Children Safe • Children under 6 years of age should be kept indoors

during mowing. • Make sure children are a safe distance away from the

area you plan to mow because rocks and debris often can shoot out while the lawn mower is running.

• Keep a close eye on children when a lawn mower is in use. Make sure they do not run into the mower’s path.

• Never allow children to play with the mower, even when it is turned off. A lawn mower is not a toy.

• Children should be at least 12 years old before operating a walk-behind lawn mower and at least 16 years old to operate a riding mower.

• Never allow children or any other passengers on a riding lawn mower because of the potential for falling under the mower and sustaining serious injuries.

Weather and Terrain • Do not cut grass when it’s wet because it can cause

your feet to lose traction and slide. • Do not use a mower on hills or slopes, to avoid having

it tip over and cause injury.

Prior to Mowing • Read your mower’s instruction manual and familiarize

yourself with the product prior to use.• Use a mower with a control that stops it from moving

forward if the handle is released.• Clear your lawn of items such as nails, sticks, rocks,

toys, sports entertainment, dog bones, wire and equipment parts, so the debris does not cause damage or hurt anyone.

During Usage• Wear close-fitting long pants and long-sleeved shirts,

eye protection and heavy gloves. • Do not wear sandals or be barefoot. Wear sturdy

shoes with good traction. • Do not wear jewelry. • Always fill and start lawn mowers outdoors. • Never fill the tank with gasoline when the lawn

mower is on or hot. • Do not remove safety devices or guards on switches. • Never reach underneath a mower because the blade

remains engaged even when it is shut off. • Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary. • To remove debris from mower use a stick or broom

handle, not your hands. • Always shut off the engine before leaving the

mower unattended. • Stay away from the engine cowling, as it can become

very hot and burn unprotected flesh. • Wait for blades to stop completely before crossing

gravel roads, unclogging the chute, or removing the grass catcher.

To learn more, watch our animated educational video about lawn mower safety, available for viewing on our YouTube channel, youtube.com/shrinershospitals, and share with your friends and family. In the video, Fezzy, our cute and cuddly Love to the rescue® ambassador and mascot, shares tips on lawn mower safety in a fun and engaging film for all ages. Should an injury occur, the physicians and staff of Shriners Hospitals are here to help. For patient referral information, please call 800-237-5055 in the U.S. or 800-361-7256 in Canada. Both lines are staffed weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., EST.

Shriners Hospitals Wants Kids to Stay Safe

NEEDLE GUILD CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

right 80 years ago!) Mrs. Marie Ford, lady of Illustrious Sir Herb Ford (P.P. 1937) donated five second-hand sewing machines to found the “Ararat Shrine Sewing Circle.” The name was changed to Needle Guild in 1947. And the group has never faltered.

This is no “you take what we make” group. These ladies actually take orders from Shrine Hospitals across the country for needed items. This year our Needle Guild made surgical caps, lap quilts and toys for Shrine Hospitals in Galveston, TX; Spokane, WA; Lexington, KY; Cincinnati,

OH; Chicago, IL; and naturally St. Louis, MO, among many other requested items.

Have I made mention of the fact these ladies had fun? I can’t stress how much fun I observed in five minutes of watching them “work”. Even though I’m all thumbs, I was tempted to try my hand at some of the jobs they handled so easily, but after watching a

lady embroider a beautiful de-sign for what appeared to be a quilt square; and equipped with the knowledge that I don’t heal as well as I used to, I opted to pass on the playing with sharp objects segment of the meeting! All jesting aside we should all be very proud of our Needle Guild. They work to make the hospital experi-ence of our patients better and they manage to have some fun along the way. If you have cloth, thread and other items the Needle guild may find useful, please let them know. I am certain there will be some satisfaction in knowing your donation went into making the life of a child just a bit better. If you like to laugh and have fun, perhaps you may want to drop by a Needle Guild meet-ing. They meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month (except for July, August and December) Contact information is in our 2017 Calendar book, pg. 18. They have jobs for every one - no matter what skills you may, or may not have!

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! The ceremonial is not far away, May 13th and it’s time to get your candidates lined up. We are still going to be obligating candidates as we go through the year, but asking them to attend the ceremonial as we did last year.

Our Masonic Outreach Team visited Compass #120 Lodge in March. Noble Roger Salyer and the team brought pizza and met with the Lodge brothers. The Drift Bike Club also brought out some of their bikes and everyone had a fun time. The meeting was cut short due to the weather, but I think our Masonic Brethren appreciated the food and fellowship.

I would like to talk to you about noble retention. It’s important we know how to retain our members once we bring them in. We are losing members within the first year at an alarming rate. There are several causes for a member to get suspended. New Nobles leave for many of reasons; economic; lost interest; lack of fellowship; misunderstanding–but, probably the most prevalent is because they do not get active and don’t feel comfortable just having been initiated. It’s important for each of us to make our new Nobles feel welcome. Top Line Signers, talk to your new Nobles; make them feel that they are a part of something special. Make sure they know what is going on at the Temple and help them with getting involved.

Should you have questions concerning membership or need assistance with membership ac-tivities, feel free to reach out to any one of us. We’d be glad to help. Also, if you would like to work with us on the committee, let me know. We could use the help. We meet once a month on the Tuesday before the Temple meeting. Our meetings start at 7:00 and we are in the Truman Room. You are ALWAYS WELCOME, please come join us.

The View From the Cheap SeatsBY BILL WARREN

Spring is upon us! As I sit writing these thoughts, winter has actually tossed a snowball at us but I am

certain winter’s days this year are numbered! I actually like this time of year. My Pipes and Drums brothers and I are out and about spreading good cheer and collecting for the Circus. The tone around the Shrine is positive and things are ramping up for Parade Season. The Potentate’s Ball is just a couple of days away and our first parade is about two weeks into the future. We have a new telephone App for Ararat Shrine Members that is helping to insure communica-tion is current, and the information is correct (or correctable!) All in all, this is the pause be-fore the leap that will be this year’s parade and event season.

One of the things I have noticed about Parades. The people who stand along the road seem to have a great time. They wave and of-fer comments that can be at times hilarious! The children are almost always exceedingly shy at first and as you get a few feet past they often will shout sweet messages that make me smile. One little girl squealed shortly after the Pipes and Drums Unit marched past “I like your dresses!” And that my friend is why God made little ones so cute. We aren’t tempted to stop and correct them in the midst of a parade!

I am curious about our Nobles at Ararat. It seems to me that the same men that parade and laugh and have more fun than they should are the same men who attend Temple meet-ings, go to the various dances, parties and gatherings we have throughout the year and these same men seem to live at the circus. Are

these men “Working”? One could certainly make an argument for that. Particularly busy

are the men of the Divan and their ladies who seem to live at our Shrine Center. They are at every event, meeting, raffle, dance, band tournament, golf tournament, sing along and dog wash we seem to offer. They are also incredibly busy behind the scenes insuring the business side of our operation is under control.

These men and their ladies don’t hear it enough. Thank you, my Brothers, who serve on our Di-van. You invest countless hours of time when you could be elsewhere. We sincerely appreci-ate you.

Ok, enough about the people I see. What I want to discuss is the people I don’t see. Some of our brother Nobles are of an age that getting out is a challenge. We love them and honor them with our work. Some other Nobles are busy working the weekends or nights or working constantly as is often the case and truly do not have the time to be as active as they want. We understand and look forward to when you will be able to slow down just enough to spend the time to laugh and work with us. And others still (You know who you are) just think of parading and being active here at Ararat as not your cup of tea (or beer or lemonade) I would respectfully say you are shortchanging yourself. I think the time I have “INVESTED” here as a Mason and a Shriner is some of the most rewarding and pro-ductive times of my life. I understand some of us are a little shy. Believe me I am not terribly comfortable walking up to a stranger and intro-ducing myself. But I made the decision that I would do things for MY SHRINE KIDS that I

would not do for myself. I have never begged for anything for myself in my life. I don’t plan on starting anytime soon. However, I have been to the hospitals and watched the children with their burdens. I have been to the circus and watched the children who get little other joy in life save this annual trip out to the circus. After seeing these incredible miracles, I made the decision I would beg for them. I am confident if you had seen these things you would do the same. For those who are younger and weaker, I and my brothers beg, and spend of ourselves to make their world a better place. The fact that we re-ceive tremendous amounts of laughter and joy from our labor and that we grow closer as friends is just a perk. If you are one of my brothers who have elected to deny yourself this perk, you have not received the full measure of what it is to be a Shriner.

I would say to you, strengthen your re-solve, buck up your courage and get in the game. That is where the reward of being a Shriner awaits. Take a stroll through the Cal-endar Book and look at the various Units and Clubs we offer. I am CERTAIN you will find at least one that sparks an interest. Show up at Bingo on Thursday nights and offer to lend a hand (If you have two years as a Shriner un-der your belt). Attend Temple meetings and reach out to your Brothers. I promise, they will reach back and make you feel as part of the family. After all, you are part of our fam-ily and when you are working as a Shriner or spending time at Ararat you are at home. In closing I would offer this; at the end of our time on this earth, I prefer to look back and know I used it all up. I don’t want to leave one ounce of fun, adventure or laughter on the table. Don’t you want to be the same?

Blue Springs Shrine Club News BY JIM GARGOTTA

Wow! We did it! We moved to the Elks Lodge #2509 in Blue Springs for our March meeting. Let’s welcome

our new members, Noble Larry and Lady Su-san Adolphsen. Our club just keeps growing and that is why we moved to the Elks Lodge in Blue Springs.

The club is planning on attending the World War I Museum on April 22nd and hav-ing lunch downtown after the tour.

In May we will not be having our normal club meeting. On May 21st the club will be go-ing to ‘Moscato’s Masterpiece’ for a little wine, food and painting. Those Nobles that don’t want to paint will be meeting across the street at ‘Buffalo Wild Wings’ for food, drink and sports. Our President Noble Tony Kenna reiter-ated that we plan on a tour of the New Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. We are trying to schedule a date and time that works for the hospital and our membership. As you know, there are a lot of activities happening in the summer months.

Mark your calendar’s for July 15th, for our annual Blue Springs Shrine Club Pancake Breakfast. The door opens at SidePockets in Blue Springs from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We’ll be serving ‘Ray’s Famous Cakes,’ Ba-con, Sausage, OJ and Coffee.

We would like to send our condolences to the family of Noble Louis Sohn who was vis-ited by the Black Camel on Feb. 13th. Noble Sohn was a long time member of Ararat Shrine, gracing us with 43 years of his life. He was also a long time member of the Blue Springs Shrine Club. He will be missed.

If you would like to join in on the fun, we meet the fourth Monday of each month. This month we are meeting April 24th at 6:30 p.m. at our new home, the Blue Springs Elks Lodge #2509, 100 NE Brizendine Rd., Blue Springs, MO 64014-6506 . Come join us and be a part of the fun! Remember to let us know if you’re going to attend, so we can plan appropriately. Call Noble Jim or Lady Gail Gargotta at 816-228-2401 if you have questions or need direc-tions to our new meeting place.

So what this means is you can make more money for your Unit or Club by getting in your Circus Monies by the end of MAY to make double % money for your Unit or Club! So let’s all try and sell as many Circus ads and collect as much Circus money as possible to make your Unit or Club as much money as possible and make the Circus a bigger success in 2017. We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

Ol’e Cars April ReportBY MICK OWENS, SCRIBE

March is a busy month for the Ol’e Cars Unit. Our monthly business meeting was held on the 6th and our monthly dinner meeting was held on the 13th at Kross’s in Sugar Creek. March 18th was the Potentate’s Ball with several Unit members and

their ladies in attendance. March 24th and 25th is our semi-annual fund raiser; the Mecum Collector Car Auction. I would like to thank all of the Nobles of Ararat Shrine for their help in this semi-annual fund raiser. Without this assistance we would not be able to make the $2000 donation to our Shrine Center’s Cornerstone Fund in January. On a sad note the 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner retractable hardtop of our deceased member and former Director, Ben Kropf will be in this spring’s Mecum Auction. I hope the family gets what this fabulous car is worth.

In late January, I had the privilege of touring the Shriners Hospital in St. Louis. I have been a Shriner for over 20 years and have never taken the time to visit one of the Shrine Hospitals for Children. I must say that it was a very emotional tour. The only children we saw were those waiting for an appointment or those leaving. Our tour guide pointed out several plaques around the hospital honoring Nobles and or Units of Ararat Shrine that had made significant donations to the St. Louis Hospital. The one that made the biggest impres-sion on me was the one honoring Ararat’s Mounted Guard. If I was to say that I kept a dry eye during this visit I would be lying! Every Noble and Lady of Ararat needs to take the time to see this outstanding facility we have built in St. Louis.

If you have a passion for cars and own an automobile that is at least 25 years old and desire to be in one of the best units in Ararat, contact any member or visit our monthly meeting. We meet on the first Monday of the month at Ararat Shrine Center and our meeting starts at 7:30.

More InformationBY NOBLE GARY DAVIS

This month I want to talk about PARTICI-PATION. As a Shriner you can PAR-TICIPATE in whatever Club, Unit, Fund

Raiser, Temple Job or whatever it is that interests you. The KEY word here is PARTICIPATION! Everyone is usually up for the Eating and drink-ing get together’ s like a Shrine Club Meeting or an event where there is food or drink and tables to sit at and visit. But when it comes to that Dirty Word “WORK” very few are all that interested. Our Shrine membership numbers are down to just over 2000 Shriners from a one time high of 10,000 Shriners. So what this means is that there are a lot fewer Shriners to PARTICIPATE in doing the work that needs to be done whether it is an Event, a Parade, or a Temple Meeting etc.

Let’s talk about the monthly Temple busi-ness meeting. I have heard Shriners tell me that a Temple Business Meeting is “LIKE WATCHING PAINT DRY”. Well, that is not exactly right. Yes there are some slow times in the Temple Busi-ness Meeting. BUT I know there are Shriners out there that went to many business meetings in their work career that were a lot MORE BOR-ING than Monthly Temple Meetings and they were not Cutting Up and having a Good Time like we are having at our meetings. When was the last time YOU went to a Temple Business Meeting? I have been a Shriner for only 3 years and I have attended a lot of Monthly Temple Business Meetings that were both Fun and In-teresting. I especially enjoy the meetings when

one Shriner stands up right before the meeting ends and announces “The first round is on me in the restaurant after the meeting” Now when this happens there really is PARTICIPATION! I certainly hope this is not the only thing it takes to make us PARTICIPATE because I don’t think this is why any of us became a Shriner. Let’s look at it another way. In ANY group or organization there are usually a small Percent-age of people that do all or most of the work. Well Shriners are no different. I would say that there are maybe 5% of the Shriners that show up to PARTICIPATE at monthly Temple business meetings or other events. The business meetings let us as Shriners know what is going on each month, how our funds are spent and what we do or plan to do as a group. It is a little like the Pres-idential election. For years and years I feel that everyone thinks my vote does not matter. Well I think everyone’s vote mattered this time and I am NOT CHOOSING SIDES but the voters did make a difference. As a Shriner your VOTE and your VOICE is needed to conduct business at the monthly Temple meetings and each and ev-ery one of you need to be heard from and seen. The monthly Temple meeting has been moved upstairs to A&B because there was no need to use Benedict Auditorium. It was too big because of a lack of “PARTICIPATION”

Not only is there information that each Shriner needs to know at the Monthly Temple Meeting but there is other fun also. I am not sure exactly what was going on at the February Tem-ple Meeting but it was “Grown Men” having fun with “noises.” Now the “noise” would happen at an inopportune time and then there was an odor

on the stage that everyone seemed to notice. Someone blamed it on Henry McDaniel but no one was sure. Everyone got a lot of good laughs out of it! Larry from Bingo presented the money for the month one evening at the Temple Meet-ing and he had a hand full of 20’s, 10’s, 5’s, and 1’s left to guess what the Bingo players donated that month. After a few guesses he tossed the $900+ into the air and you should have seen the Divan on their knees picking it up! Pretty funny!

Also, the meetings now start at 7pm and usually only last 90 minutes to 2 hours; by start-ing earlier those of you that live out of town can get home at a more reasonable time. Out of town people should get a group together one month and make an evening trip to the next temple business meeting. Get to the restaurant early, have a great meal, visit with friends and end the afternoon with the temple meeting. If you have not eaten at the restaurant lately you are missing out on some good eating. Our restau-rant manager Mary Bauer is doing a great job in the restaurant for us! What would be really cool is that 10% of all Shriners turn up at the next monthly business meeting and show the 2017 divan that yes we will participate and “make our temple big and great again!”….(Um, I think i heard something like this before????)

At our Richmond Shrine Club Meeting we had smoked pork chops, cheesy potatoes, salad and cheesecake. The ladies did an excellent job of putting the meal together and cleaning up afterwards so we owe them a BIG THANK YOU!

An upcoming event in Richmond, is the 5th Annual Shrimp Boil on July 8, 2017 be sure

to come. This will be my first time at this fun event and I hear it is FANTASTIC! EVERY-ONE IS INVITED! Watch for an informational flyer in the Ararat Shrine News.

Also there seems to be a For Sale sign floating around the Richmond area that is get-ting some attention. It was on Deon’s Body Shop and Perry’s Shop. They were getting calls about it. This appears to be an “alternative fact sign!” These places are not for sale. So if I lived in the Richmond area I would look really well around my property or business just in case a For Sale sign shows up unexpectedly.

Richmond Shrine Club sold the most Gun Raffle tickets in 2016 and we plan to do it again in 2017. If you see a Richmond Shrine Club member, please purchase your Gun Raffle Tick-ets from him. Remember this is a big money maker for Ararat Shrine and these tickets are an easy sell!! Plus the Richmond Shrine Club has bragging rights to uphold!

Use Web FEZ to update your infor-mation (www.webfez.shrinenet.org) or call Linda at the Temple to update it. Jim Gar-gotta informed us at the Richmond Shrine Club meeting that he and his helpers are trying to contact Shriners whose phone number and/or address have changed and mail is returned to the Temple as undeliverable. If we get 200 mass mailing letters back that is $98 in wasted postage, not counting the letter and envelope, etc! So to fix this problem check with your Shri-ner friends that you know who have moved and remind them to update their information asap. Just think how many Shriners are missing out on all of this good information!

Shriners Hospitals for Children Provides Hope and Healing Through Care, Research and EducationShriners Hospitals for Children® is a unique health care system with a reputation for finding answers, and giving families hope. At our 22 locations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, children receive expert care for orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay for services. Since opening our first hospital in 1922, we have provided care to more than 1.3 million children, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

A Tradition of Providing State-of-the-Art Specialty Care In the 1920s, the first Shriners Hospital was opened primarily to help children who had contracted polio. Today, the majority of our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children provide care for children with all types of orthopaedic conditions, including clubfoot, hip disorders, limb deficiencies and deformities, scoliosis, and orthopaedic difficulties related to cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions.

Aware of a need for medical expertise in pediatric burn care, we opened three hospitals specializing in acute and rehabilitative burn care in the mid-1960s. These are the only hospitals that were initially established exclusively for the treatment of pediatric burns and related conditions. A fourth hospital in our health care system offers treatment in all four of our care disciplines, including burns. These hospitals continue to be pioneers in pediatric burn treatment and research and are recognized as leaders in the development of improved and innovative treatment techniques.

In the early 1980s, our organization opened the nation’s first pediatric spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers. There, patients have access to a complete range of services needed to recover to the fullest extent possible.

Cleft lip and palate is the health care system’s fourth service line. Facial clefts are one of the most common birth defects in the U.S. Despite the frequency of its occurrence, and the severity of the deformities, comprehensive care for patients with cleft lip and palate can be difficult to obtain. Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to improving care for children with this condition through a coordinated program of clinical excellence, teaching and research.

Groundbreaking Research and Discoveries Shriners Hospitals for Children strives to discover answers that will one day improve lives by conducting high-quality, innovative research,

especially in the areas of burns, orthopaedic/musculoskeletal and neurological injury and disease.

Over time, our researchers have made significant breakthroughs in all four of our service lines, improving the care and quality of life for countless children worldwide, while adding to the global body of medical knowledge.

Educating the Health Care Professionals of Tomorrow We are also proud of our role in medical education. By maintaining relationships with several medical teaching facilities, Shriners Hospitals for Children fosters an academic environment committed to providing superior education for medical professionals and expert care to all patients.

Eligibility Admission to our hospitals is based solely on medical need. All children, under the age of 18, are eligible for care if there is a reasonable possibility they could benefit from the specialized services available. All services are provided regardless of the ability to pay.

Be Part of Our Mission At all Shriners Hospitals for Children locations, our patients receive both expert treatment and support that encourages healthy, independent lives. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our health care system relies on the generosity of donors to carry out this mission of improving the lives of children.

Your Ararat Shrine Pipes and Drums Unit has been busy with plans to support our Philan-thropy and our Circus. Naturally for a unit with a Celtic background, the time around St. Patrick’s Day is perhaps our busiest of the year. On March 10th we gathered in the Blue

Springs area and visited several places where we played and collected funds for the Circus. Satur-day March 11th was also a very busy day where we began in Westport with the annual Westport 4 mile run. We are proud to report that we crossed the finish line first. (We didn’t run the race but we did stroll over to the finish line before the racers got there!) There was talk of us running the race; the guy who brought the idea up is expected to survive.

After the Westport event, Pipes and Drums headed South and East to the beautiful suburb of Lee’s Summit. There we unexpectedly participated in their parade since we managed to be standing along the route and there was an opening in the parade! After a brief bit of parading, we detoured off the route to visit a variety of excellent drinking establishments where we entertained the fine people of Lee’s Summit and collected funds for the Circus. As the sun sank in the west, we ramped up our efforts and managed to find our way home.

Sunday March 12th found the proud and mildly hung over men of Ararat Shrine Pipes and Drums in Martin City, Missouri where we marched in their most excellent parade and can proudly claim the title of Best Pipe Band in the Parade. We were privileged to meet more than a few local dignitaries and created quite a stir when we unexpectedly left the parade route to visit one of our fa-vorite places, Jess and Jim’s Restaurant and Bar. Actually the only people who were surprised were the parade organizers. We knew we were leaving the parade early and going to the bar! After the parade we once again resumed our duties of visiting local pubs, bars and party houses to entertain, share in the fun and collect funds for the circus.

All in all the weekend was a great success and the men of our Pipes and Drums were pleased to spend time in the community. We actually are not a bunch of rowdy drunks (Please don’t tell anyone our secret) but we did manage to invite several men to investigate Freemasonry, made a contact for a child to be potentially treated by our hospital network and shared a great weekend with the community. We managed to find time to have a great deal of fun along the way! As I am writing this we are planning some additional fun and fundraising for the next weekend. Among the things we will be doing is piping our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Randy Berry into the Potentate’s Ball at Harrah’s Casino on the 18th. While we are just the tiniest bit footsore from the events of last weekend we are all very much looking forward to this weekend. This is a great time to be a Shriner and a perfect time to belong to Ararat Shrine’s Pipes and Drums.

If you would like to claim the title of “Reprobate in training” please let one of the men of Ararat Shrine’s Pipes and Drums Unit know. We will teach you to play something (Even if it’s just air guitar or kazoo!) and introduce you to some of the best times in Shrinedom. We meet most Thursdays in the Band Room at the Temple and do our best to keep our Facebook page updated. Look for Ararat Shrine Pipes and Drums on Facebook and toss us a like! We will keep you current on our deeds and adventures.

Nobles,

In recent weeks Ararat Shrine has changed its liability insurance provider and under the general liability coverage provided the new carrier concedes that parade vehicles not requiring a state license plate are covered under the Temple’s blanket general liability policy during the time that such vehi-cles are in parades, practices, competitions or exhibitions provided these events are under the auspices of Ararat Shrine. This coverage is for liability only and does not imply coverage for any physical damage to any insured vehicle that is covered nor does the coverage extend beyond the aforemen-tioned events when the vehicle may be used for purposes other than Shrine activities.

In order to receive this coverage each Noble must submit a registration form, a copy of which accompanies this writing, and pay a $20.00 admin-istration fee. Upon receipt of the registration form and the $20.00 fee a parade sticker for the current year will be issued. Each Unit Director, or parade group coordinator is requested to send to the Temple office a list of all participating members with vehicles.

Requirements for parade vehicles requiring a state license plate remain un-changed. Proof of insurance naming Ararat Shrine, Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children as additional insureds is required to receive a current year parade sticker.

Fraternally yours,

Michael E. Wheeler, Recorder

Ararat Needle GuildBY: JERRI DOWDY

The Ladies of Needle Guild are working hard on all our projects because the last meeting in May is packing day when items will be sent to six Shrine Hospitals. Some of our ladies are busy on the sewing machines making shorts and cast shorts for girls and boys, toy

bags, pillow cases, special pillows and other articles. Other ladies are stuffing the special pil-lows. Many ladies are busily embroidering squares for quilts, some are sewing the quilt squares together. Other ladies are working on the laptop quilts that are a special request by one of the hospitals. Others are cutting out the articles to be sewn.

If you are interested in making articles for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and making new friends, we would love to have you become a member of Needle Guild. Even if you don’t sew, we can find a place for you. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. We have a short busi-ness meeting, enjoy lunch prepared by the restaurant and visit with each other while working to help the children of the Shrine Hospitals. We hope to see you at a meeting soon.

Lafayette County

Brother Delmar Dothage called the Lafayette County Shrine Club meeting to order on March 9th 2017 at the Masonic Lodge in Higginsville. Brother W.N. Gray gave the invocation. A supper of chicken breast, baked potatoes, peas, salad and dessert was thoroughly enjoyed by

all. The cooks were given a well-deserved round of applause. The actual business meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, then Brother Delmar wel-

comed Brother Tim Rechterman, Assistant Director of Uniformed Units, and his Lady Linda, Brother Deon Williams, Richmond Shrine Club President, our Ambassador, Brother Alvin Kal-lenberger, and Brother David Hutton, our Marshal and liaison with the Divan.
