NOVEMBER 2015TANGIER “HOT SANDS”
STATED MEETINGThursday, Nov. 12thDINNER 6:15 PM
MEETING 7:30 PMBABYSITTING AVAILABLE
Tangier Shrine Office • RSVP to 392-0404
LADIES PROGRAMLadies playing Bingo.
Potentate’s MessageFall is definitely in the air. The leaves are
turning, the nights are colder, and hopefully your football team is winning or at least not losing in the final seconds of the game! October was a busy month for Tangier. We had a great Ball, thanks to Carl and Lynn Monico, Linda and Bob Jasa, Frank and Susie Kroupa, Pam Schultz, Greg and Lee Anne Norton, Ed and Carla Mummey, Adam Reese, Jim and Sandy Parks, Jim and Becky Parks, John “Slugger” Chester, Ron Stites, and AJ Johnson, the KSA, DeMolay, and Rainbows, for all they did to make it a memorable evening. I am sorry if I missed someone.
We also had a few other great events throughout the month. The Chanters Rib Feed was fantastic; your food is only exceeded by your singing. Congrats to the Mobile Nobles and Keystone Kops for another great Hayrack Ride. It was great to see such a big turnout from the community, not just Shriners. I also want to thank Dean and Lori Stockman (and the Kops and Kuties) for handling the Halloween party. It was a yabba dabba doo good time!
November will be a big month for membership. We have the Ceremonial on Friday the 6th. We had a great response to the letter we sent inviting Masons who were not yet Shriners, to join the Shrine. Please come out and support these new nobles and their ladies as they join our great organization. The schedule for the ceremonial is in this issue. I know we are planning on getting started by about 6:00 pm and be finished by 9:30. At the November stated meeting we will be honoring our 50 year members at the dinner prior to our meeting. I also believe we will be joined by the FSCAN folks to present another check to the Transportation Fund. I know the ladies are looking forward to playing bingo while we have our meeting. Please call the office to make a reservation.
We will be doing a Historical Degree on Saturday December 5th. As part of the day, Tangier will be hosting a cocktail party that evening. Our goal is to get our current nobles and their ladies, as well as our new members, to attend the event. We want to give every club and unit a chance to sell their respective groups to the new nobles. Each club and unit will be provided a booth to tell their groups’ story. This should be an excellent vehicle to get some new members into your group. We will encourage groups with vehicles to bring at least one that night. We are planning on displaying mini-cars and motorcycles in the lower level. This event will replace contracting with a hotel. I am asking each club and unit to donate to help defray the cost for the evening. Tangier will be hiring a caterer to provide the food and we will host an open bar for the evening.
Lastly, I want to thank Noble Don Larson for his service to Tangier as Recorder for the last few years. Unfortunately Don resigned his position last month. Noble Chuck Sohm has volunteered to fill the position of Recorder for the remainder of the year. Tangier will need someone to step up and fill this vital position for 2016. Please contact any member of the divan if you are interested in running for Recorder. Realistically, the position needs someone who can be at the Temple approximately 15 hours a week.
Please continue to support Tangier and the work we do to support our kids!
“Remember, the gift of life flows through you!”
With the passing of Noble Walt Mailand, we have all lost a friend, a fine Brother, and a dedicated worker. Walt spearheaded the bloodmobile program for years and is personally responsible for getting many of us to show up at the various blood drives to give the gift of life. His many years of dedicated service will not be forgotten.
The next blood drive is on Saturday November 14th at Tangier. It would be fitting if, in accordance with Walt’s oft-voiced wishes, at least one donor from each club and each unit were to roll up their sleeves and give a pint of blood. Together, let’s make this the best showing in years!
Notify Mike Foreman of the time you can donate.
See you on November 14th.

NOVEMBER 2015TANGIER “HOT SANDS”
ChantersBy: Bernie HauberThe Chanter’s Rib Feed has
come and gone. We hope you all enjoyed the food at our little fundraiser. The Chanters have been practicing on Mondays to add songs to our repertoire, to help improve our performances, and because we enjoy singing. The Chanters plan to provide some music during the Fall Ceremonial on November 6.
It is with a heavy heart that I must report the passing of Walter C. (Walt) Mailand. He was born May 21, 1924 in Omaha, NE and went to his final reward on September 26, 2015. Walt was a life-long Nebraskan (GO Huskers) and went to Central High School. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World II as an anti-aircraft gunner in the Pacific Theater. Walt worked hard and was a dedicated family man. Walt was an avid reader and in recent years never went anywhere without a book. He also enjoyed reading with the 2nd graders at Conestoga School. He was an active member of the Omaha Golden K Kiwanis Club and Morning Star Lutheran Church where he sang in the church choir for many years. Walt had been a Mason since 1948. Walt was a long-time member of Tangier Shrine and sang with the Chanters for many years. In the Chanters, he was a past-Captain and was the deep baritone voice of the touching narration during the group’s performance of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Walt supported Tangier in many ways including the Blood Drive. Past-Potentate Jim Parks Sr. narrated Walt’s Masonic Service at Roeder Mortuary - Ames Chapel on October 8, 2015. We Chanters, will miss his presence and voice, but we know that the Choir Eternal above has a new baritone.
The Chanters have completed the schedule for the Christmas Tour which will begin on December 8, then December 13 and end on December 15. Details about the Tour will come out next month. That’s my update for November. We will always welcome new members. Any man interested in joining us should contact any Chanter or just stop by on Mondays at the Shrine Center. We usually start practice promptly at 7:00 pm with warm-up beginning at 6:50 am.

Arab PatrolBy: Steve Bugajny, SecretaryGreetings one and all from Arab Patrol. The leaves are falling and the stores are
already pushing Christmas items. It seems to come earlier and earlier every year.
The parade season is done and the Circus is around the corner, and we are looking forward to it. We are already planning our Christmas dinner and of course family get together for Thanksgiving. The Patrol is happy for a bit of a rest. We sure have enjoyed the participation in the various dinners we were glad to offer assistance to as well as the many social events sponsored at the Shrine Center.
Talk about getting to know your fellow Shriner, as a club or unit or just mingling around at the different functions, what a fun way to enjoy your community. We have a fantastic organization and great men and their ladies who make it all happen. So enjoy the seasons, have a safe Thanksgiving and be kind to your fellow Shriner.
Peace and good thoughts.
Corvette ClubBy: Dave Witchell
Is it November already? The leaves have turned and winter will soon be here. The parades and car shows are over and it is nearly time to tuck the Corvettes away for the winter.
However there is much to do for the Corvette Club…November 6th is the Fall Ceremonial at Tangier. November 11th the Corvette Club will be preparing awesome food at Hamburger Night.
November 14th is the next Tangier Blood Drive … please donate a pint and save a life! Please remember that the Corvette Club and Motor B will be selling the most beautiful Christmas Trees in Omaha starting on November 27th, (the day after Thanksgiving). Be sure to shop early and get the best selection!
Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

What a wonderful time we had with our beautiful Supreme Queen, Sharon K St John. She is a very gracious, caring, and helpful person. She made all the officers feel comfortable before our ceremonial. My family and I got to spend a day with her, my parents fell in love with her. Speaking of the ceremonial, we took in 9 new princesses. They are Becky Donner, Belinda Jackson, Jane Jackson, Althea Jones, Erin Marr, Jill Rawlins, Marcy Shaw, Renee Stoffers, and J’Lynn Young. Congratulations to all of them. All the officers did a wonderful job. Thanks to Past Queen Carol Sorensen, ceremonial assistant for whipping us into shape.
I want to thank Past Queen Linda Jasa for coordinating the banquet, Princess Pam Schultz for the wonderful food, and Princess Kathy Kelley for the beautiful decorations. Also helping with the banquet were, Past Queen Mary Waite, Princess Susie Kroupa, Brad Waite, Bob Jasa, and Carl Monicco. Thank you very much. I hope I didn’t forget anyone. The banquet was beautiful.
Our next fundraiser is November 15 from noon to 4pm. It is a chicken dinner and a craft fair. We have several vendors. Come have a good dinner and do some Christmas shopping. Contact Princess Cheryl Elliott at 402-690-4431 or Princess Roxanne Mrasek at 402-690-1870 for more information.
Please keep Princess Evie Peck and her family in your prayers. Evie is in Hillcrest for rehab following a bad stroke.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Tangier BandBy: Paul Mason
The fourth Thursday of each month, during the fall and winter, the band will return to its usual business meeting/practice session as before. If any Shriner wants to sit in with us and play, you are welcome. We have the stands and the music, so all we need is you and your instrument.
The Tangier Band will continue to play at Stated Meetings, impromptu events and practices. In addition, members of the Band will continue to entertain at various Senior’s Homes, which are in the area.
The Band is always looking for band instrumentalists, and can always use a few more brass, woodwind, and percussion players. If you need an instrument, maybe we can find one for you. If you are interested, please contact Paul Mason [email protected] 731-9696 or Jim Radosevich [email protected] 496-2691.
Please continue to support the fund-raising activities of you local clubs, units, and lodges

Hillbilly NewsDirector’s StaffBy: Mel Morton
It is already November and only have two months left before the start of a new year. This month we have turkey day and the start of the holiday season. We all should give thanks this month as we sit down at the table for our Thanksgiving dinner with our families as we are more fortunate than others.
Everyone had a great time at the Potentate’s Ball. What a great setting at the Scottish Rite. This is a grand event every year with a great turnout.
The fall ceremonial is November 6th with the arch program. Get your petitions in so we have a big class. If you haven’t seen this program, get your reservations in as this is a great program.
The Directors Staff is slated to cook on November 18th for hamburger night. We will need all hands on deck that night. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Our temple meeting is November 12th with dinner at 6:15 pm and the meeting at 7:30. Don’t forget to call in your reservations for the dinner. There have been some good crowds with lots for fellowship at the dinners. Don’t miss the good meal and fellowship with your fellow brothers.
Check out the other units and clubs fundraisers this month. There are quite a few and they are all good ones. You won’t go wrong by attending and I’m sure you won’t leave hungry.
If you are looking for a unit to join, come and check us out. We meet the 4th Monday of the month in the lower level of the Shrine at 7:00 pm. We are always looking for guys with new ideas. Remember to support you blue lodge as they need your help also. If it wasn’t for your blue lodge you wouldn’t be a Shiner. Remember it’s a great day to be a Shriner.
Hospital FloatBy: Mike Donham
November has two important holidays: Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Veterans Day, November 11 – Please remember our veterans and the sacrifices they made to preserve our country. Thanksgiving, November 26 – Give thanks for the blessings that we receive each day.
Planning ahead: Please plan for the Hospital Float’s Christmas Party at Piccolos on December 13. There will be appetizers and you can choose from four entrees. Call Mike Donham at 402-558-9032 to make your reservation and entree choice. Piccolos will close their doors on December 31, so we thought this could be a trip down memory lane.
Remember the Unit will be selling cranberries from Wisconsin and T-shirts and sweatshirts. Ask any member for details.
November birthdays include Ladies Nadine Ellis, Beverly Donham, and Kristel Hanslip. We wish them a Happy Birthday and many happy returns.
Sickness and distress include Lady Evelyn Peck hospitalized and Noble Mike Donham spent a day in the hospital in late September. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

NOVEMBER 2015TANGIER “HOT SANDS”
Keystone KopsBy: Steve “Hootch” Elliott
Where did the summer as well as the year go? Parade season is over and I am already missing it. So many people to get wet and so little time.
Keep in mind and put Saturday November 14th on your calendar, which is the date of the annual Keystone Kops Auction and Steak Dinner. Bargains are always the common thread and this year there will be many super items. So do your Christmas shopping early with the Kops.
Kop birthdays in November are: Howard “Duck” Miller and Craig “Bubba” Sullivan. The one Kutie birthday in November is: Mandy Rock. Kop anniversaries in November are: Chief Dean “Stick” and lady Lori Stockman.
Last month’s know your kop question was, Who is “Shave” and how did he get the nickname?
The answer is, Gene Holman is “ Shave” but how did he get the nickname? It seems that Gene was participating in his favorite pastime, pieing Kops. He was spending so much money on real pies he decided to economize by making pies out of shaving cream. It was a short livid experiment because the shaving cream got in the eyes of those being pied and it stung badly. So the shaving cream pies ended but the name stuck.
This month’s know your Kop question is who is Boo Boo? Since this is the last article I will write, because Chief Stick will write the December article. I will give the answer. Allen Smith is Boo Boo, and he loves the nickname and encourages everyone to use it in lieu of Allen. At a CSSA skit a few years ago the Kops were doing a skit about Jellystone park and they needed a Kop to play the part of Boo Boo and the rest is history.
Remember to always support your Blue Lodge, Rites, and your Shrine, but most importantly do not forget why we are Shriners and that everything we do is to help Children.
Motor BBy: Ed Hatter
November is here and is the month to give thanks. I would like to thank the unit leaders and everyone that has volunteered for another great year in Tangier. I was able to attend some great motorcycle events this year: the Gathering of the Fools in Houston in April, the InZane Rally in Spearfish in June, the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis in August, and Bikes, Blues, and BBQ in Fayetteville in September. All total was just shy of 11,000 miles by motorcycle for me this year. That was a pretty good year to be thankful.
Motor B and the Corvette Club will be selling Christmas Trees at Tangier beginning the day after Thanksgiving on November 27.
Motor B now has new mini 110 cc Motorcycles and Quads to parade. These are going to be a blast to ride in the parades.
We will be meeting at the Farmhouse Cafe at 3461 South 84th Street, just south of the Shrine Center. We have a new meeting time. We are going to try moving the meeting time to 6:30 to allow more time to get there from work.
Please join us the November 2nd at 6:30 pm at the Farmhouse Cafe at 3461 South 84th Street, if you have a motorcycle or have an interest in motorcycles. We have all kind of bikes in our unit, so don’t think you have to ride a Harley.
Ride Safe and watch out for Motorcycles.

The fall is gearing up and Mo-Ri is in the middle of it all! From working the spaghetti feed to serving at the October Stated meeting we have been busy helping our Shrine. A relaxing meeting at Surfside for some fine chicken and fish with an adult beverage or two and October’s meeting at the Millard Roadhouse. Election of officers will be coming up and I’ll keep you posted on the results.
Hope to see you at one of our meetings, you’ll have fun!
MO-RI
Motor ABy: Dan Davis
Fall has arrived and the little cars are headed for the garage to sleep through the long winter, dreaming of the warm days of summer and the next parade season.
We held our October meeting at Ron and Tammy Stites’ home. A great time was had and we will all cherish the memory of Ron washing paper plates in his French Maid apron. October Birthdays include Roger and Ron, Anniversary Micha and Jennifer. Our next meeting is at Rick and Rosemary’s on 2 November. Rumor has it that Dick has an even cooler apron than Ron, I know I am looking forward to it.
Now, the Adventures of Motor A Bob (a work of pure fiction, any resemblance to actual events by a member of Motor A or any other Tangier Shrine organization, no matter how similar to real events or to your perception of organizations, is purely coincidental). “Spinning into Darkness Part 2”. It was late and Motor A Bob was dozing in his favorite recliner. His phone rang. As he picked up the line he heard “Special Agent Magnum here, we need to meet tomorrow, 2100, Tangier Lounge, Northwest corner. I will be the clown with the blue flower, pink hair, red shoes with the Herald Sports section, upside down. You will say the Rain is Spain falls mainly on the Plain, I will reply with John has a long Mustache” The phone went silent. The next evening, Bob made his way to the Tangier Lounge, it was full of clowns, honking horns, walking invisible dogs, making balloon animals; your standard Tangier Clown get together. Making his way to the Northwest corner, there sat a clown, studiously reading the Herald Sports section, upside down, Bob had found his contact. He approached the table, casually saying, “the rain in Kansas falls on the Mustache” Bob was a bit nervous, to which Special Agent Magnum replied “Don’t do this much do you? Sit down, take a load off. Why the clown outfit, right? Well we have been conducting an undercover investigation into substandard red noses. Seems one of the overseas mobs has been trying to pass off non-organic noses and we have been looking into potential infiltration into Tangier. Luckily Special Agent in Charge Stripes smelled them out and sent them packing before the forces of evil could get a nosehold. We have completed our investigation into the strange happenings in Motor A.”
Until next month Keep those tanks filled and don’t forget your keys (Go Kart, Trailer, House, Truck, Car… I am sensing a trend).

NOVEMBER 2015TANGIER “HOT SANDS”
Vintage IronBy: Jay Johnson
Wow, looks like we made it through another bout of Halloween with all the ghosts and goblins about.
Attention car fans, we are looking for a few good men with Vintage Iron. Come to our meeting and get to know some of us the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm. We are a great bunch of motor heads and always looking for a good time.
It is not too late to get some new Shriners signed up. We need four new members to just break even. Some may even have Vintage Iron in their garage just itching to show ’em off.
The Fall Ceremonial in honor of Past Potentate Illustrious Sir John Wonder is Friday, November 6th; please plan to attend. Social Hour starts at 6:00 pm.
On November 11th please take a moment of prayer and be sure to thank our Veterans and Wounded Warriors for a job well done and an extra prayer for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We owe them our freedom.
Reminder that the Blood Mobile will be here on November 14th picking up where Halloween left off. So if you can, be sure to drop off a pint or two.
Now get ready to Gobble, Gobble, Gobble. Turkey day is near. Lots of good old home cookin’ coming up.

Hi Everyone! What a strange fall this has been. I’m hoping that it cools off soon. Yesterday was a record high for Omaha, too hot for October, but better than snow (you know, that four letter word).
Thanks to everyone that made our Fashion Show, craft fair, and luncheon a success. We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. We did well, therefore the Hospital did well.
Please don’t forget that the Hospital has asked for hairbrushes for the hygiene kits. We did so well with wash cloths, I know we will do the same with the hairbrushes. Take them to office and label them for the Auxiliary.
Keep those tabs coming, they make a difference.
Not a whole lot to say this time. It seems that the days and weeks are going very quickly and we will soon be in another year. But before then we have much to do and see. Don’t forget about today while planning for tomorrow.
Have a very Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends.
Talk to you next month.

Tangier PiratesBy: Sonny Ashford
Well ye land lubbers missed a great opportunity to stuff your face fer free wid da Krispy Kreme “Talk Like a Pirate Day”, on September 19th. Talk like a Pirate and ye got a donut and if ye dressed like da Pirate ya wanna be ya got a dozen. Ye can come to Tangier on da fourth Monday of each month and start rubbin elbows with the Pirates Club and be ready for the next event on September 19, 2016. We be in port now so we be easy to find.
Our annual CHICKEN NOODLE BRUNCH will be happening on November 22 from 11:00 am-2:00 pm with real picked chicken and homemade noodles. As an all-you-can-eat for $8, it is a gastronomic extravaganza. All of this is made from scratch and you will appreciate that from the first bite.
The Fall Ceremonial will be November 6th, with the historical degree on December 5th. This is a great opportunity to visit the Pirates’ booth and start to rub elbows with some of our swarthy crew. The bounty that you can bring to your gullet will definitely be worth the stop.
If ye wanna contact a Pirate then use da email at [email protected].

By: Bob Schapp Do you want to grow the skills and
confidence to effectively express yourself in any situation? If so, come have some fun with your fellow Nobles and Ladies at a Toastmasters demonstration meeting at Tangier on Tuesday, November 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants develop these skills at their own pace in an upbeat, no-pressure atmosphere. There is no instructor. Rather, members evaluate each other’s presentations in a friendly and supportive way. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success.
Once we have 20 committed members, we can charter our own Toastmasters club at Tangier. If we have enough at this demonstration meeting, we will start the process that night!
No reservation is necessary, but feel free to call Noble Bob Schapp or Princess Amy Schapp with any questions at 314-799-5300.

We are definitely moving into the holiday season. Fall is here and opens new events to promote Tangier.
We would like to shout out a big thanks to all members and their ladies for the help in preparation for the second annual Haunted Halloween Hay Rack Ride and Chili Feed. It was a big success as advertised. This joint venture with the Keystone Kops came off without a hitch. Congrats to all for the success.
We would also like to thank all members and their ladies for your participation during the parade season.
“OLD 357” is now on a schedule for required maintenance and some large upgrades. It will be ready for our participation in promoting the upcoming Circus. We will again be at local HyVee stores to give rides to kids and their parents to encourage them to attend the Circus. We will publish a schedule for our appearances in February. Everyone is welcome to ride. We are a rolling billboard for the Circus. Come join us.
We also want to encourage our members and their ladies to attend the upcoming Stated Meetings. This is an important function and we need to be recognized as a very active unit.
We would like to wish all a joyous Thanksgiving Holiday. See you down the tracks.

Important Dues News Your dues notice will be mailed from Shriners International
Tangier Shrine is known as one of the leaders throughout the 195 Shrine Centers of North America. This accomplishment could not happen without you, the Tangier Shrine Noble. As 2016 is fast approaching, we encourage you to send in your dues as soon as possible, by January 1st if you can. Please note that during the 2015 Imperial Session, action was taken to increase the annual Per Capita tax from $15 to $30 beginning in 2016. Per Capita funds are used to train temple leaders, support the temple membership and staff, and finance the operating expenses of Shriners International and the Imperial Session. We have to send a large percentage of the per capita funds and hospital funds to Imperial in the first part of the year. Tangier dues for 2016 will be $90 per year, $5 goes to help support our 22 Hospitals and $30 goes directly to Imperial, thus leaving $55 to operate your Shrine Center. You can also purchase your Life Per Capita Membership for $450 on or before December 31st, 2015 to take advantage of your current rates! Dues can be paid in various ways:
• Check mailed in enclosed envelope • Check or cash paid at the office
(Please do not drop cash in mail slot, we cannot be responsible) • Credit Cards are accepted:
Call and give credit card number to Cheryl or Sandy at 402-392-0404 or stop at the office for them to process your credit card
• Mail credit card information on back of dues notice to the office • Have credit card put in our system and paid automatically each year • Go to tangiershrine.com to pay on line
Please do not e-mail credit card numbers Please remit your payment directly to Tangier. Your newly designed 2016 plastic membership card will be sent to you beginning in December 2015, from Shriners International. Tangier Shrine has a membership fund to assist those members who find themselves in financial difficulty, but want to remain members in good standing. If you are able and willing to round your dues up to $100 (or more), Tangier can continue to offer this assistance to those who are in need. Thank you very much for being a Noble of one of the BEST Shrine Centers. Tangier’s success is because of you and your efforts, time and financial assistance. If you have any questions please call the office at 402-392-0404 Fraternally yours,
