February 2019

Notes from the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

Wow, the cold hit us hard and calling off school

was necessary for our children’s safety. When we

take days off, they need to be made up. The Board

of Education will set the new calendar, but that

will not happen until the cold season is over.

Please plan your vacation around the fact that we

will be going (at least) five days longer than

anticipated. This means we will be in session into

June. Final exams will be administered the last

three days of the new calendar. Final exams are

not given early. Students who miss exams will

need to take the exams after school lets out.

Congratulations to the following students who

have been named the Students of the Month for

December. You exemplified great respect for

yourself and others, and we want to acknowledge

the example you set at Sandwich High School.

The Annual Junior Class Auction

The annual Junior Class Auction will be held on

Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Sandwich High School

cafeteria. The Post-Prom Committee will be

offering a light luncheon for $5 at noon with the

live auction beginning at 1:00 p.m. This fundraiser

consists of items that have been gathered and

donated by the class officers, parents and

businesses. Items are auctioned off to the highest

bidder!

Some of the items to be auctioned off this year

include: two parking passes (reserved spots) for

the 2019-2020 school year, three seats for the

Class of 2019 graduation (front row reserved) and

Mr. Gerrish’s famous salsa!

The auction is open to the public but parents

and guardians who attend the auction will earn

$5 off (max one discount per student) the Prom

ticket for their junior or senior son or

daughter, so please plan to join us.

It’s a fun time! All proceeds go directly to Prom

and will help lower Prom costs. Thank you for

your continued support!

SHS Junior Class Advisor

Vision and Hearing

Each school year, vision/hearing screenings are

conducted for Sandwich District #430 schools in

accordance with the rules and regulations of the

Illinois Department of Public Health. Vision

screening will be done as mandated for the

Page 3: SHS NEWS...SHS News 5 In the World of Sports at SHS Boys’ Basketball: Sophomore Boys placed third in the recent I-8 Conference tournament with a 44-42 win over Plano. Varsity Boys

SHS News 3

following children: preschool, kindergarten, 2nd,

8th, special education students, new/transfer

students and students with any other concerns.

Hearing screenings will be done for preschool,

kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, special education

students, new/transfer students and students with

any other concerns. Vision and hearing screening

will take place at SHS on Thursday, Feb. 7. If you

do not want your child screened, please contact

Kim Gonzalez, school nurse, at 815-786-2157,

ext. 6, or at [email protected].

Asthma, Inhalers and Medications

Winter has arrived and with it comes an increase

of weather-related illnesses such as asthma. Just a

reminder that any medication brought to school,

including inhalers, must have a school medication

form completed and on file in the main office.

A new law was recently passed requiring any

student with asthma to have an Asthma Action

Plan on file with the school. Your child's doctor

should be able to provide one; if not, the school

has sample plans that your doctor can complete. If

you have any questions regarding medication at

school, please contact Mrs. Gonzalez, school

nurse, at 815-786-2157, ext. 6.

Career and College Fair

On Friday, Feb. 15, all Sandwich High School

students in grades 9-12 will have an opportunity to

explore their future during the school day. More

than 40 career and college representatives are

scheduled to come to SHS to talk to our students

about the connection between career and college.

Many students head to a four-year university

undecided about what direction they want their

future to take. With the reduction of available

funds from state grants and the rising cost of

education, our students need to start thinking

earlier about their return on investment regarding

their education.

The SHS Career and College Fair is a great

opportunity to ask potential employers questions

about types of careers available in their industry

and what education is required to get started in a

career. The next step is to talk to college

representatives, ask questions about what

programs they have and the cost of attending. We

provide all students with a list of questions to ask

a potential employer and questions to ask on a

college visit.

Blood Drive

National Honor Society will be having its second

blood drive of the year Friday, Feb. 22, in the

south gym from 8:30-1:30. Walk-ins are welcome.

You must be at least 16 years old and 110 pounds

to donate. If you are 16 years old, you need a

permission slip. If you are 17 or older, you do not

need a permission slip. If you have questions,

please email Mrs. Thorson

at [email protected].

Social Studies

Just a reminder, even with the days missed of

school, AP testing and the US Constitution test

dates will not change. The teachers in the

department will adjust the schedule in their

classrooms to accommodate the already scheduled

testing. If you have any questions, please contact

Mr. Pajor ([email protected]) if your

student is in APUSH and Mrs. Thorson

([email protected]) if you student is in

the following class(es): AP Comparative

Government, AP Macroeconomics and/or regular

US Government.

Senior Parents: It is time to remember those graduates with a personalized ad

in their 2019 yearbook.

Traditionally, senior parents have placed words of

congratulations, encouragement, or remembrances in the

yearbook for their senior.

These ads are in all color and allow you to include some of

your favorite pictures of your senior (a baby picture, an

embarrassing middle school photo, and/or a graduation

picture).

Ads are due by Friday, March 22, so get your pictures

together and write your words of love to your graduate. For

ideas, you may want to look at a previous yearbook or see samples below.

Actual photos stay in building and will be scanned and immediately returned to you. If you

have jpeg images, they can be mailed to [email protected] along with instructions.

Prices and the order form are attached. Address questions to shsyearbook430.gmail.com.
