Newport News Shipbuilding is celebrating Black History Month in February. As part of NNS’ company-wide Inclusion and Diversity campaign, four employees are featured on posters recognizing the month. Articles about these shipbuilders will be published in Currents, the NNS to Go app, MyNNS and on social media each week in February.

Growing up attending ship ceremonies and listening to her father tell stories about the shipyard, Cassandra Joe (O43) knew from a young age that she was destined to become a shipbuilder.

So following her graduation from Huntington High School in 1971, it only seemed natural for Joe to begin applying for jobs at the shipyard. “It took me six years to finally get hired, but I was determined that nothing was going to stand in my way,” she said. “I came in as a fuser in the LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker program and stayed until the program was discontinued. Then I was transferred to the carrier program as a welder, before eventually making my way to the Maintenance Department – where I remain today.”

Known to her coworkers as “Little Joe,” she is responsible for performing crane and yard maintenance throughout the company’s 550-acre campus. “I’ve been on every crane in

this shipyard from ‘Big Blue’ to the smaller cranes in shops,” Joe said.

Today, she is the only female in her crew of 12 – and is also the longest serving African American female Master Shipbuilder in her department. “I consider myself a living legacy of the many contributions African American women have made to our society and the shipyard,” Joe said. “I feel like I’ve left my mark on the shipyard and have also been a role model for those following in my footsteps.”

When asked to sum up her 41-year career in one word, she said: proud.

“I’m proud of my work, the people I work with – and our ships,” Joe said. “I’m also proud of the life I’ve built as a result of the shipyard. As a single mom, I’ve been able to provide for my family and send both of my children to school.”

Joe is also proud to have witnessed a lot of change – both nationally and at Newport News Shipbuilding. "I’ve witnessed the election of the first African American president – and at the shipyard, I’ve witnessed the promotion of the first African American vice president and the election of our company’s first female president – all things that make me proud.”

Though close to retirement, Joe is excited for the future. “With different generations, backgrounds, races and skillsets working together – the future is bright,” she said. “I’ve always believed that if you have a big heart and treat everyone with respect – the rest will take care of itself. When this happens, people are able to come together as one and think big, dream big and do big.”

View Joe’s poster on MyNNS or the NNS to Go app. If you are interested in sharing your story as part of NNS' Inclusion and Diversity campaign, visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/id-campaign-2018.

The drivers’ devotion doesn’t go unnoticed by riders. “I can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate each and every driver,” said shuttle rider Sherri Christensen (K45). “It’s very obvious they are dedicated to the safety of the people they are transporting.”

Shuttle rider Jane Tawney (O93) said NNS’ shuttle drivers “do their best to look after and accommodate riders. They are truly appreciated.”

Jonathan A. Arena will succeed Jim Gildea as vice president and chief counsel of Newport News Shipbuilding. Gildea has served in the role since 2011 and will retire April 1 after 23 years of service to Huntington Ingalls Industries and NNS.

HII Executive Vice President and General Counsel Kellye Walker announced Arena's selection Friday, Feb. 2.

Arena comes from Boeing, where he has served as senior counsel, Boeing Global Services, since 2015. At NNS, he will be responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to senior management and overseeing and coordinating the provision of legal advice.

...completed the program, which aims to equip instructors with the skills and knowledge to facilitate effective, efficient and engaging workforce development, procedural and regulatory training.

“Sometimes I don’t think people realize the impact that you have when you’re in front of a group of learners,” Avery said. “It’s a huge responsibility, and this program has really allowed us to understand the knowledge and skills that we need to help the learners, and that’s really what it’s about.”

The program is broken into two phases. During Phase One, or the Development Phase, participants attend courses — online and in person — to learn and hone skills within nine instructor competencies. After completing Phase One, instructors can apply for Phase Two, or the Certificate Phase. During the Certificate Phase, a comprehensive exam, observations of instructing classes and an oral board are used to validate participants’ skills and knowledge.

After successfully completing the Certificate Phase, participants become IDCP certified instructors. Instructor certificates are valid for two years, and holders can maintain a valid certificate by earning continuing training units.

Hewlett said the program is beneficial to any instructor who is looking for a challenge. “If you’re not going to take on the challenge for yourself, think about your learners,” he said. “Our trades deserve the best instruction, and I think this company has some of the best instructors and training available in the industry. But this will make it better.”

Watch a participant describe the program in a video on MyNNS. For more information, visit the IDCP SharePoint site.
