October 2011

Dear Friends of St. Ignatius,

The Annual Report can only tell part of the educational experiences and the resulting transformation that occurs each year at S.I. While photos and excellent writing can convey quite a lot – and I am proud that Genesis does this consistently – there are untold stories that are equally important and that move our students to greater depths. The immersion trip of the seven S.I. musicians along with their teacher, Dr. Gillian Clements, tells one story of great significance and points us toward the universality that Jesuit education prizes so much.

The S.I. story is not just a story of success in education. It is the story of Jesuit education that transforms our students, inspires our alumni, causes heartfelt commitment among our faculty and gives hope to our Church, community and humanity through the lives of a community – men and women for others, brothers and sisters with others. Truly, our success in education would not be the same without the generous support of you, our benefactors and alumni. Your belief in the value of a Jesuit education, a St. Ignatius education, is deeply appreciated. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

The Superior General of the Jesuits, the Very Reverend Adolfo Nicholás, S.J., gave an address about Jesuit higher education in Mexico City in April 2010. His main points are as poignant for Jesuit high schools as for Jesuit colleges. He challenges our schools to educate students to a depth of thought and imagination that analyzes and rebuts the superficiality of today’s culture, a superficiality that is dehumanizing and dangerous. While the excellence of teaching at S.I. and the rigor of student learning help to achieve this lofty goal, the bow on the package may likely be tied while being on a Kairos retreat, working on an immersion trip or sharing music in Kenya. This depth of education opens the learner to the dimensions of universality that Fr. General spoke about in his address. This global awareness is nothing new in Jesuit education, for even in St. Ignatius’s day 40 Jesuit schools stretched from Peru to Prague, from Goa to Germany. Sometimes this kind of learning is hard to convey in print, but it clearly occurs each day, each year at S.I.

Thank you especially for your support of our students who need your help to attend S.I. This year over 26 percent of our students will receive more than $2.3 million in financial aid. In less than five years, we have increased the number of students receiving aid from 250 to 370, and we have increased the funds given by $1 million. The need is great. The need is growing, as is evidenced by 30 percent of the freshman class receiving assistance. Your continued generosity is critical. It is likewise so effective. You are doing great things for God and for these young women and men of St. Ignatius by your charity. Thank you with all my heart.

Gratefully yours in the Lord,

Rev. Robert T. Walsh, S.J. ‘68 President, St. Ignatius College Prep

We especially thank the following lifetime friends who have made provisions in their estate

plans—bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance or retirement funds—to support SI’s

Endowment Fund. Such gifts provide for the long-term welfare of SI and may also

provide donors with valuable tax and income benefits during their lifetime.

The forethought and generosity of the following is most appreciated.

by Joe Vollert ’84, Vice President for Development

I have two pictures of note in my office. The first is of Rev. Harry Carlin, S.J.

’35, the Jesuit president who moved our campus to its current location almost 43

years ago, the longest SI has been at any one site in its 156-year history. I have that

picture of Fr. Carlin for two reasons: First, I’m in the office he occupied for more than

30 years. It is his office. Secondly, he worked tirelessly to raise the funds to build this

campus. I am reminded that his are the shoulders upon which we stand.

The second picture is a 1981 shot of President Tony Sauer, S.J., and Regents

John Christen ’61 and Don Dana ’66 burning the last of the $8 million debt papers

and completing Fr. Carlin’s dream. It captures a pivotal time in SI’s history that at once

looks back to the obligation and burden of debt while anticipating SI’s emergence as

a premier college preparatory.

Since then, with the support of our trustees, regents, alumni, parents and

benefactors and with the good work of our faculty, staff and administration, we have

ensured access to SI for qualified students and have maintained and enhanced our

11 acre campus.

After you lifted us out of debt in 1981, you began an endowment that now

provides $2.6 million to SI this year, $2.2 million of which will enable more than 370

students to attend SI who otherwise could not afford to do so. The challenge in front

of us is to maintain fidelity to that pledge and to our mission. To do so, we need to

meet a growing and very real need for assistance, and, quite frankly, we need that

$2.6 million to become $4 million a year.

You have also supported more than $35 million in campus additions and

improvements. Excellent facilities beget excellent formation and education. A well-

maintained campus is not only the vehicle for quality instruction, it also attracts

future students. Once here, we will do what Jesuit schools worldwide do: transform

adolescents into men and women for others with the “courage to lead” and the

“passion to serve.”

The bottom line is that you invest in an experience which produces graduates

who, as the pages of Paul Totah’s Genesis magazines attest, bring their gifts to where

the world needs them most.

Where does your money go? Less than eighteen cents on the dollar goes to

support our administrative fundraising costs. The balance goes to specific programs

that you target, to campus improvements such as a new press box and stands or to

significant upgrades in the Herbst Natatorium. Most importantly, your gifts continue to

build our scholarship endowment.

I thank you for your remarkable generosity this past year, and I invite you to

continue to support St. Ignatius in the work of bringing a Jesuit education to young

men and women of the Bay Area. S

David Halsey enjoyed his freshman welcome day in August along with all the members of the Class of 2015 and their parents.

A partner with the law firm of Jacobs, Spotswood & Casper, he was a Knight of Malta, past president of the St. Thomas More Society and former chairman of the San Francisco Republican County Central Committee. “Donald Casper was a kind and thoughtful friend and supporter to so many people in North Beach and throughout the city,” said Marc Bruno, Vincentian Life director for the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco and a friend of Mr. Casper. “Don has been a friend of mine since I was a teenager,” said Angela Alioto, former president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She said the two saw each other “almost every morning” at the Porziuncola Nuova at the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi and called Mr. Casper “San Francisco’s historian par excellence.” The family asks anyone with knowledge of the incident to call the family through Matt Castagnola ’77 at (415) 987-6762. New Look for SIprep.orgSI LAUNCHED A NEW LOOK TO ITS WEBSITE IN AUGUST thanks to a West Coast grad and an East Coast company. The site’s new look is the creation of Marwan Salfiti ’93, a web designer formerly with Monster Cable, and the founder and design director for Brandwell Creative. Salfiti was part of an advisory committee that met two years ago to evaluate the look and user feel of SI’s former website. The group urged SI to redesign its site, and Salfiti was hired for the job. Students, parents, faculty and eighth graders weighed in on an earlier design, and Salfiti incorporated a variety of suggestions to come up with the final website, one that uses the school’s colors and a collage of several of the school’s six campuses. “I wanted to build on the rich history and heritage of SI and its longstanding reputation as a preeminent city school,” said Salfiti. “The design tells the story of SI then and now, with photos that are visally exciting for everyone.” Salfiti hopes that when alumni, parents and students visit the website, “they feel as if they are actually inside the school. The website and the institution should match. My company specializes in creating this kind of experience.” With Salfiti’s design in hand, SI then turned to Finalsite, based in Connecticut, which sells its content management system to schools around the world. Thanks to Finalsite, students, faculty, parents, alumni and board members each have their own portal – a page where they can find news, information and resources just for them. If you’re an SI grad or current parent, go to www.siprep.org and click on “community portal” to get started. Alumni: Your username is your first initial, followed by your last name and then by your two-digit year of graduation (i.e., jsmith75); your password is your Alumni ID number, found in the address box on the back of this magazine (i.e., A75-100). In the case of several alumni living at the same address, you will find all the alumni codes listed on the back of this issue. Send questions to [email protected]. S

Sports Radio Enjoys Second Year at SI BY ANNE STRICHERZ, genesis SPORTS WRITER

ALTHOUGH ST. IGNATIUS HAS A TRADITION OF RADIO PROGRAMMING THAT BEGAN WITH KRSI broadcasting music in the halls and the Carlin Commons, today SI Sports Radio is available through the Internet. Any Wildcat fan can listen to a variety of girls’ and boys’ sports on a computer or mobile device. KC Murphy ’77, Sean Lawhon ’87, Chuck Nann ’79 and several faculty, coaches, student and alumni broadcasters offer color and play-by-play for a more than a dozen games. Last year, they were joined by Jim Dekker ’68, Joe Vollert ’84, Bob Sarlatte ’68 and Terry Ward ’63 as well as several others. Taped interviews that aired before games and during halftime breaks featured SI coaches and student athletes. The idea for the Internet broadcast came, in part, after Immaculate Heart Radio (AM 1260) broadcast several games between SI and SHC, thanks to Louis Kolenda ’77, who serves on the station’s board and who asked Murphy, his SI classmate, to do play-by-play for the games. “No one had asked me to sit in the broadcasting booth in more than 20 years,” said Murphy. “It is just as much fun talking about sports at SI today as it was when I was a student at Santa Clara.” Lawhon, who produced the Bruce-Mahoney broadcast last year, made a point of sharing the history of a storied intercity rivalry. “Anyone listening developed an understanding of and an appreciation for just how connected these neighboring schools communities are,” said Lawhon. In 2010, George Devine, nephew of Peter Devine ’66, approached SI with the idea of launching its own Internet radio show. Lawhon took on that job and invited Murphy to serve as the voice of SI; Lawhon, who also directs SI’s digital and social media, uses the broadcasts to promote SI admissions and events. Students have served both to set up equipment and to offer commentary durng the game. George Angelopolous ’12 and Kerry Crowley ’12 have been regular color commentators, and Jack Snow ’12 and Patrick Tooker ’13 keep statistics, which are used during the broadcasts. Murphy hopes to involve more students and include more games that transfer well to radio. “Last year we asked Nate Woo ’11 and Joel Schow ’11 to join us in the booth during a girls’ volleyball CCS playoff game,” said Murphy. “As players on the boys’ volleyball team, they brought keen insight and knowledge of the game.” Crowley, who hopes to become a sports broadcaster, noted that SI Sports Radio “is a great way to learn about what’s going on at the school right now. We might feature events related to one class, to alumni or to performing arts or discuss biographies of players.” One three-sport athlete is Maria Kemiji-McDonald ’12, who was named SanFranPrep.com’s female athlete of the year for San Francisco. “She’s arguably the best athlete at SI,” said Crowley. “Through SI Sports Radio, I get to praise her skills before a wide audience.” The Bruce-Mahoney boys’ basketball game had the highest number of listeners last year, with audiences tuning in from as far away as Boston and New York. “We have tracked listeners tuning in from LA, San Diego, Portland and Chicago,” said Lawhon, who also invites people who missed broadcasts to listen to past shows on demand at www.siprep.org/sportsradio. Go there, too, to see the 2011–12 schedule of broadcasts. S

68 genesis

WHEN DR. GILLIAN CLEMENTS, SI’S DIRECTOR OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC, took seven students to Kenya this July for two weeks, she knew a bit of what to expect. After all, she had spent a year and a half at the Mt. Kenya Academy, where she had started a string orchestra before coming to SI in 2008. She did not forsee, however, the addition of a new trumpet to her horn section. When she and her students visited an orphanage for young elephants and rhinos on their way to Mt. Kenya Academy, her students insisted that SI adopt a young elephant, Kainuk, whose mother had fallen victim to the severe drought in Eastern Africa. The students came up with $50 to pay for its care for a year at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. As a result, Kainuk’s adoption certificate now hangs framed in the SI band room, reminding students of their remarkable journey, one that brought them many friends and a deeper understanding of Africa. Seniors Reubhen Diaz, Felix Portillo, Michael Echaniz, Amy Lie and Tommy Simpson, along with juniors Briana Megid and Zoe Hopkins-Ward, went to London, Nairobi and the Mt. Kenya Academy (a four-hour drive from Nairobi), accompanied by Clements and Jim Ward, Zoe’s father. Students performed in Nairobi’s Kenyan National Museum along with the Kenya Conservatoire of Music Orchestra for its end-of-term concert. Four members of SI’s jazz band also performed several pieces on their own. “Everyone loved ‘Take the A Train’ and ‘Sidewinder,’” said Clements. “The jazz combo was a crowd pleaser.” After four days in Nairobi, students traveled to the Mt. Kenya Academy, where they lived in the dorms. They spent several days rehearsing and repairing instruments, many of which Clements had brought with her in 2006. They augmented that earlier donation with gifts of instruments and replacement parts from three local music stores in San Francisco. While students made close friends with their Mt. Kenya Academy counterparts, they felt uncomfortable only once. On a trip to the nearby town of Nyeri, they found themselves in the middle of a poor Third World village, faced with the stares of villagers. “The town was a cultural enigma to me,” wote Diaz in a reflection after the trip. “I realized later that the uncomfortable stares were warranted since the locals seldom interacted with foreigners. Call it mutual perplexity.” SI students visited a Nyeri public school and were “profoundly affected seeing the grinding poverty” said Clements. “They were humbled and horrified to see the disparity in wealth between Nyeri and the U.S.

The next day, students dug deep into their pockets to buy school supplies at a local store for the students they had met in Nyeri.” The seven SI students ended their stay at Mt. Kenya Academy with a July 29 performance before an audience of 600. “The kids were exhausted by that point,” said Clements, “but they were also energized by all the new friends they had made.” Before returning to the U.S., the group went on safari, where they saw a lioness as well as elephants, giraffes, hyenas, warthogs and gazelles. Clements enjoyed the “reactions and transformations of the students throughout the trip. They were exposed to everything from poor towns to upperclass private schools. They responded with an openness and love that inspired me.” She hopes to return to the Kenya every two years with more instruments, bicycles and other items to donate both to the school and to the surrounding community. Please email [email protected] if you can help. S
