Message by SVP Susan Ringol

The “On to Montreal R.I. Convention” launch was very successful. Rtn Rose joined me and my spouse Milo in representing our club. We were entertained well and given a short French lesson. PAL and several travel agencies offered discounted prices for the trip. Our very own PP Wally was one of those invited on stage for Baron Travel. Regarding our medical mission, our partner in service Ms. Cotton Miller of Country Bank will be helping us with the medicines and invite more doctors to join us. She already have a commitment from 3 dentists late last week. She also made the arrangements with the Barangay Chairman of Napindan, Taguig for the venue and physical arrangement. We shall have a final coordination meeting with the Barangay officials and Ms. Miller within the week to prepare for the big day. Our draw for the “Raffle for a Cause” was rescheduled to Nov 14, 2009. This will be held at the fellowship after our Medical Mission. This will also be a joint birthday celebration of Rtn Manny, Rtn Delia, PP Sioni & PP Maricel. PP Al will take care of the venue reservation. We will invite AG Eugene Yu and PP Pol to the fellowship as our special guests. Meanwhile, (PP Al’s) Spouse Mia, is helping us in the solicitation of prizes from the hotels. We already have confirmed Gift Certificates from Discovery Suites and Discovery Shores Boracay. Many thanks Spouse Mia!! Let’s keep our hands outstretched and continue serving for the Future of Rotary is in Your Hands!!

WOMEN IN ROTARY

Until 1989, the Constitution and By Laws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. In 1978, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, invited three women to become members. The RI Board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against the RI claiming a violation of state civil rights law that prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations. The appeals court and the California Supreme Court supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club’s charter merely for inducting women into the club. The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary Clubs do have a “business purpose” and are in some ways public-type organizations. This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar “public accommodation” statutes. The RI Constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council of Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the “male only” provision for all of Rotary. Since that time, women had become members and leaders of clubs and districts throughout the world.
