Imagine the pain a child feels who suffers from sickle cell disease. It is
unbearable, especially for a 2-5 year old, just trying to understand their pain.
These are children who will often be absent from school because of their
illness. Some schools provide a minimal program for these children, but is that
enough? No
Disadvantages being in a Regular Public

Poor grades because of numerous absences
School not equipped to handle their disease

Advantages of having their own Facility
Experience staff with knowledge of their illness
Health facility on site to handle crisis
Building design is appropriate for the children

Increase self esteem being with other children with the same illness.
Benefit to the School District
No need to accommodate for long absences
Improvement in students performance
Relief for parents having to rush to get their kids from school because of crisis
School will attract new influential people whose kids have the disease
State acknowledgement for being the first to offer this service
Instructional Design for the Curriculum
This curriculum will follow the standard curriculum used by the school district
Modification implemented to better accommodate absences
Gross motor will now include water exercise
Health classes will include sessions on handling sickle cell crisis.

Majority of staff should have some experience with handling sickle cell students.
SummarySickle cell crisis is a serious
disease and should be handled with care. These are precious students who
want to learn, but their illness at times gets in the way. Help them be normal and learn at the space like other students without the disease. But provide them
with the resources to do so.
