    PRESS RELEASE

Initiated by a series of ricochet invitations, Side Efects is an international artistic project led by Estonian artist Laura Kuusk and French art theorist Pascale Riou. This collaboration was born out of a common questioning on artistic activity, sideline work, pluriactivity, artistic choice and chance.

After the irst exhibition taking place in Tallinn in 2013, the second phase of the project will be held in Grenoble. The works of about thirty artists are accommodated in four spaces: the Former Museum-Library, the headquarters of the Arrangement of Activities (AIRE), the Showcase Gallery and the website of the Association for the Arrangement of Activities (AAA).1

For most of the participating artists the starting point for their work lies in the daily routine, the everyday low. Like for the French artist Séverine Gorlier who’s raw piece Outback was executed on the corner of a kitchen table with handy papers and pens. These drawings may appear insigniicant, but as an evergrowing and potential matrix theyactually become fundamental.

Like footnotes to a conceiled text, these works relect the structures of thought and reveal the peritext of these activities. Thus, in her photographic triptych Lovers' Discourse and video Howevermuch the Estonian artist Laura Toots revisits the family archives, to focus only on the details and to use just the negligible, the plans between two actions, removing thereby the intimate to better reclaim these images.

The accidental and the derivé become dominating factors, acting as the creating force for a work of art. For his series Sweaters the Estonian artist Jaanus Samma gatheredhomophilic and homophobic tags from the streets, later using them as patterns for knitting sweaters. Alongside her artistic practice, the Czech-Ukrainian artist Alice Nikitinovà photographs uncanny objects and situations encountered during her daily strolls. A selection of these images is gathered in artist books called Albums.

Before the exhibition, work is done in situ, and several meetings and discussions will be taking place. The Russian artist Alexandra Galkina was invited to prepare her work for the Showcase Gallery; French artist Ahond Céline was asked to present the performance What Film Do We Live in?, taking the form of an ambulation between diferent venues of the project.

Side Efects is interested in artistic activity and its secondary efects, sidelines, ricochets, rebounds and the unexpected. It drives to point out the ecosystem, to show the byproducts, the lively, the self-propagating (something unexpected coming from the outside, the so-called weed), the porosity. These are notions that make us constantly ask questions, that cross, feed and modify our activities, as well as this project.

    ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT

Side Efects is the aftermath of a proposal made by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Estonia (CAME/EKKM, Tallinn), which tried to build its collection by exchanging works of art against symbolic value. Laura Kuusk accepted the ofer and exchanged her piece against a temporary exhibition. She then invited Pascale Riou, her colleague from the Association for Arrangement of Activities (AAA, Grenoble), to take part in this project and follow their mutual interest in artistic activity. Side Efects consists of two exhibitions and a publication bringing together artists and works relating to artistic practice2.
