We need someone to do the music - can you help? We have a few sports trips over the hill coming up with the Nelson / Tasman 6 a-side soccer tournament at Saxton Field in Richmond, where we are taking three Yr 4-6 teams. Next week we have the Nelson / Tasman 6 a-side hockey tournament also at Saxton Field with three Yr 3/4 teams playing on Tuesday and then three Yr 5/6 teams playing on Thursday. It is unfortunate that the two tournaments coincide as it’s a bit tricky trying to prepare the teams due to weather as well as trying to coach two sports at once. It has been great to see the mixing of older and younger students playing hockey on the main court with Yr 1 children mixing it up with our Yr 6 children. The games are played hard, however it is really nice to see the senior children making allowance for the younger ones. The skill level and confidence of the children is certainly growing. This week we have welcomed Layla, who has started in Room 2. Hi, I’m Layla and I am really happy that I’m now 5 years old and can go to school. I like writing, drawing and playing with my friends and I have lots of friends! I’d like you to know some things about me:- I have severe autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis—what does this mean? Ichthyosis is a problem where the waxy layer on the surface doesn’t form correctly. I have very fragile skin. Without the keratin barrier, my skin isn’t waterproof like normal skin. My body tries to hold water in by growing extra skin layers. I can get dehydrated easily and so need to have lots of water or other liquids. The extra layers of skin are broken and fragile. As they dry out, I can get paper cut-like cracks in my hands. This limits my hand strength, mobility, motor skills, and means that getting my hands wet or touching hand sanitizer hurts a lot. If I fall or bang against something, I can get cuts where someone else would only get a bruise. I will not sweat when I am overheated, as the thickness of my skin does not allow sweat to reach the surface of my skin and make me cool. It can be difficult for me to concentrate on learning when my skin is cracked, sore or itching. Activities like holding a pencil, running or playing can be more difficult for me. Common fevers due to mild illness can cause a problem for me. In very hot and humid weather I am at risk of overheating and heat exhaustion. 6 a-side soccer now postponed until the 12th June

Room 4 have been writing about what it would feel like to be Ed Hillary climbing Mount Everest. On Top Of The World All night long icy gusts of wind tried to snatch the tent from the frozen ledge…

At 4.00 am the alarm went off on my watch. The date was 29th May 1953. I woke Tenzing. I started to speak but the sound of my voice sounded frozen. We leaned forward to reach out for our boots and crampons, then strapped them on. We had a breakfast of ice and sugar and lemon juice. We turned on our kerosene stove… (Iyla)

All night long icy gusts of wind whistled around the tent. In the morning I peeped outside, icicles hung outside from the tent and everything was frozen. I woke up Ed and turned on the kerosene stove. I thawed my boots and then we ate peaches and heat-ed sardines. My feet felt half numb. I checked my oxygen. “Here we go again…” (Tara)

The wind howled as we pitched the tent. When we had finished we clambered in to escape the icy wind that surrounded us. For dinner we had a can of sardines, a bag of prunes, heated on the kerosene stove. We went to sleep. My alarm beeped and I woke up. It was 4.00 am. We had our left over sardines, melted snow and lemon juice with sugar for breakfast, and off we went. As we got out of the tent, my teeth were chattering with the cold…. (Bella)

The wind was howling, trying to snatch our tent. I woke up at 4.00 am for the first time. I wanted to climb Mount Everest. I felt nervous, for my team was counting on me. If I failed I would be devastated. I woke Tenzing up. My boots were frozen. Suddenly there was a snow storm , but then it calmed down. “Let’s go now. We can see the top…” (Emma)

At 4.00 am the alarm went off on my watch and we set off. The wind started to howl. I turned around. I was at the very edge of the mountain. I slid off the edge but I hacked my ice axe into the ice and started to climb back up. I spiked into the edge with my toe spikes and started climbing again. Finally I got to the top of the mountain. I was climbing like mad… (Noah)

I woke with the sound of my watch alarm going off, telling me that it was 5.00am. I grabbed my boots and put them on. I reached out for my pick and we were off. I went up 200 metres…. (Trey)

All night long, shadows in the dark creep. My alarm went off on my watch, so I got up and cleared my boots of ice. I got on my way. I was freezing and hungry. At last it was nap time. … Morning, I got up. I slipped on the thick ice, but luckily I didn’t fall over the edge. I was sliding like a rocket. I got my ice axe and dug it into the ice. It was scary….. (Holley)

All night long the snowy breeze blew through the gap in the tent. At 4.00 am Ed’s watch went off. “Time to climb!!” said Ed, “Heavy metal on my back. Tenzing, Tenzing, wake up,” said Ed. Three more miles to the top. Two hours later… puffing hard, Ed’s ice axe hacked into the hard snow. One more tiring mile…. (Joe)

All night long the wind blew hard at Ed Hillary with Tenzing. They were climbing up Mount Everest. Ice had frozen their boots. Snow was thick and deep and freezing. Ice cold, slippery ice, cracking ice! The ladder!! Icy and slippery A storm of ice was coming down. Wind started howling like wolves….(Emily)
