EXCUTIVE SUMMARY

Sugar is one of the oldest commodities in the world and traces its origin in 4th century AD in

India and China. In those days sugar was manufactured Only from sugarcane. But both countries

lost their initiatives to the European, American and Oceanic countries, as the eighteenth century

witnessed the development of new technology to manufacture sugar from sugar beet. However,

India is presently a dominant player in the global sugar industry along with Brazil in terms of

production. Given the growing sugar production and the structural changes witnessed in Indian

Sugar industry, India is all set continue its domination at the global level. Indian sugar industry is highly

fragmented with organized and unorganized players. The unorganized players mainly produce Gur and

Khandari, the less refined forms of sugar. The government had a controlling grip over the industry, which

has slowly yet steadily given way to liberalization. The farmer’s co-operatives own and operate the

largest chunk of the industry's total capacity. They are concentrated primarily in Maharashtra and

eastern Uttar Pradesh. The largest number of sugar companies in the private sector is located in

southern India, in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Out of 453 sugar

mills in the country, 252 are in the co-operative sector, 134 are in the private sector and 67 are in

the public sector. Besides 136 units in the private sector are in various stages of implementation.

A Few such units are under implementation in the co-operative sector as well. But no new units

have been proposed in the public sector.

As per our study the company is not good at marketing of his products because of this GOVT.

has a regulation on the marketing of the product. The HR department is doing well because it is

concentrating on employee welfare. The cane department which is playing vital role in the

company. The store department don’t have that much responsibility because the nature of the

raw material does not support this.

Beginning of Sugar Industry in India

producing sugar following the process of pressing sugarcane to extract juice and boil it to get

crystals. It was in 1950-51 the government of India made serious industrial development plans

and set the targets for production and consumption of sugar. It projected the license and

instalment capacity for the sugar industry in its Five Year Plans.

Types of Sugar Industry in India

The sugar industry can be divided into two sectors including organized and unorganized sector.

They are producing two type of products

Page | 33

Page 34: Sidhartha Final Report

1. sugar

2. Country sprit

Process of sugar production:-

Cane is sowed during October to March every year. The first seed growth is known as the plant

and subsequent growth after harvesting from the stem is known as Raton. The early variety has

more sugar content than the general variety. Every farmer within the command area of the Mill is

provided with a specific time, which tells him when he can expect a Mill Supply Ticket (cutting

order), against which he will deliver the sugarcane. He then harvests the cane and transports it

either in a bullock cart, tractor, trolley or truck to the mill. Cane is weighed and unloaded into

cane carriers. It is then prepared for milling. Sugarcane juice is then extracted by pressing the

prepared cane through mills. Extracted juice mixed with water is weighed and sent to the boiling

house for further processing. Residual biases is sent to boilers for use as fuel for steam

generation This juice is heated and then treated with milk of lime and sulphur dioxide. The

treated juice is then further heated and sent to clarifiers for continuous settling. The settled mud

is filtered by vacuum filters and filtered juice is returned to be further processed while the Oliver

cake is sent out. The clear juice is evaporated to a syrup stage, bleached by sulphur dioxide and

then sent to vacuum pans for further concentration and sugar grain formation. Crystals are

developed to a desired size and the crystallized mass is then dropped in the crystallizers to

exhaust the mother liquor of its sugar as much as possible. This is then centrifuged for separating

the crystals from molasses. The molasses is re-boiled for further crystallization

Thus, the original syrup is desugarised progressively (normally three times) till finally, a viscous

liquid is obtained from which sugar can no longer be recovered economically. This liquid, which

is called final molasses, is sent to the distillery for making alcohol.

This Sugar is left after processing the sugar cane to remove the molasses and refine the white

sugar. The color is similar to light brown sugar but it's texture is The sugar thus is separated from

molasses in the centrifuge is dried, bagged (50 Kg and 100 Kg), weighed and sent to storage

houses.

Page | 34

Page 35: Sidhartha Final Report

Sugar is made in different sizes and accordingly classified into various grades i.e. large, medium

and small.

This sugar is sparkling white, pure, manufactured without any toxic chemicals from the fresh

canes. At Aska Sugar we producing M-30 and S-30 sugar as per standard fixed by government of

India.

BY PRODUCTS:

MOLASSES:

Molasses is the only by-product obtained in the preparation of sugar through repeated

crystallization. Molasses is mainly used for the manufacture of alcohol, yeast and cattle feed.

BAGASSE:

Bagasse is a fibrous residue of cane stalk that is obtained after crushing and extraction of juice. It

consists of water, fiber and relatively small quantities of soluble solids. The composition of

bagasse varies based on the variety of sugarcane, maturity of cane, method of harvesting and the

efficiency of the sugar mill. Bagasse is usually used as a combustible in furnaces to produce

steam, which in turn is used for power generation. It is also used as a raw material for production

of paper and as feedstock for cattle. By making use of baggase sugar mills have been successful

in reducing dependance on State Electric Boards, for their power supply as it can procure up to

90-95% of its total power requirement through captive generation from steam turbines.

Page | 35

Page 36: Sidhartha Final Report

FLY ASH:

Fly Ash is the residual output from the boiler furnace after bagasse has completely burnt out. This fly can be used as a raw material for brick manufacturing.

For production of sugar aska sugar factory use different types of machine for production of different things. These are as follow

1. Boiler machine:

Its general use for steam generation for the company at the time of sugar production. Especially steam is using for heating something. When steam is require it is use. In the time of sugar production it is use so many times.

2. Power Turbine:

The main function of power turbine is use for power production. In aska sugar factory all power needed for sugar production, Depending upon the requirement they use this machine for production of power.

3. Mill Turbine:It always rotation something. Like it rotate the masscuite continuously. Because if the masscuite is stay 3min without rotation then the masscuite then it become solid. So it always rotates

continuously. If once the masscuite became solid then it’s so difficult to make the sugar.

4. Mill: This machine is taking the vital role for extraction of juice from sugar cane. Its will not give the pure juice. It gives the mix juice. After using some apparatus it will give the dust less juice.

5. Centrifugel:This machine takes the vital role for extraction of sugar and molasses. From masscuite it is giving white sugar and molasses by the help of this machine.

6. Compressor:This machine is generally used for air supply at the time of manufacturing of the finished goods

like sugar and molasses.

Page | 36

Page 37: Sidhartha Final Report

7.Vacuum filter:

This machine takes vital role for separation of filter cake form mud juice. In this step if the juice

contains any mud then it helps to separate it and then the mud juice again go to the mix juice.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE:

The main objective of the in-plant training is to gain knowledge about functions of an

organization, its background, nature of business, its working, analyses the various product profile

of the organization.

Staying in the A.C.S.I Ltd. sugar factory for almost a month was a platform for me to know its

business conditions in the initial stage and gradual growth.

I had a limited knowledge about any organization , which was learnt in the

Classroom. But this in-plant training gave me a opportunity to relate those theoretical

concepts to the organizational functioning.

The study helped me to view the process of producing various products produced in the

Factory. To know the performance of A.C.S.I.Ltd. this is very well compared to other public

units.A.C.S.I.Ltd. produces good quality sugar.

Workers are highly satisfied with wage and salary administration and welfare facilities.

Overall departments are performing well in the organization.

To conclude in-plant training at A.C.S.I.Ltd. helped me to relate the theoretical Knowledge to

the practical environment and enlightened me with the knowledge regarding the activities carried

out at a manufacturing industry.

CONCLUSION

The aim of the factory is to develop the financial position of the farmers. So that its lead to

economic development. In the initial years, its performance was very good .But in recent years

due to some reasons its performance is not upto the mark. It is suffering from loss. The various

reasons are

Administrative faults

Unfavorable government policies.

Lack of technology in production.

Work is less but workers are more here.

Lack of sugar cane.

Cost of production is more than the selling price.

Because of the above reasons, the functions of the factory are somewhat disturbed. Its

performance is not up to the mark and it is not achieving the expected goals.

But the above problems are not impossible to solve. By regular efforts these problems would be

solved and the factory can perfectly achieve its proper goals and became as role model for the

others.

After obtaining all the information regarding the in plant training of ASKA CO-OP SUGAR

INDURSTIES LTD., I come to a conclusion that this factory is working better in almost all

fields of management related to production, marketing, finance, human resource etc. and they

should recruit well qualified staff, engineers, workers and laborers.
