Sidney Kimmel Medical College I N T E R V I E W D A Y

Welcome!

We are delighted to have you attend our Sidney Kimmel Medical College remote interview day. We had hoped that it

would have been possible to have you with us here on campus; however, when we learned that this was not possible,

our students did not hesitate to meet the challenge. They have worked with the admissions office to create a program

that we think will capture the spirit and atmosphere that is uniquely Jefferson.

Sidney Kimmel Medical College, at Thomas Jefferson University, is an institution where research, education and patient

care come together with empathy and compassion. We firmly believe that Jefferson’s greatest assets are our remarkable

student body and our dedicated faculty. Students, faculty and administrators, have worked together to create a program

for you that will provide you opportunities to meet both our students and faculty today.

Throughout your four years, you will be presented with the opportunities and access to the best clinically balanced

medical education. And, equally important, we are convinced that there is no other medical school in America that

provides a stronger sense of family among the teachers and students in which you will thrive.

Again, welcome to Jefferson and we hope to see you again soon!

Sincerely,

Clara A. Callahan, MD

1824Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jeerson University was

founded as Jeerson Medical College by Philadelphia physician George McClellan, MD, in partnership with Jeerson College of

Cannonsburg, PA.

1839Jeerson Medical College parted ways with Jeerson College

and began operating under its own charter.

1877Jeerson opened its first hospital, becoming the second

medical school in the country to have an associated hospital.

1958Jeerson’s expansion continued; Foerderer Pavilion opened.

1978The Gibbon Building of the hospital opened.

2017Thomas Jeerson University merged with Philadelphia University to

form a professional university that dedicates itself to collaborative, transdisciplinary and interprofessional approaches to learning.

1826Pennsylvania legislature passed a bill recognizing Jeerson Medical College, allowing the College to award medical degrees.

1856Dr. Samuel Gross (class of 1828), considered one of the finest surgeons of his time, returned to Jeerson to lead the Department of Surgery and founded the Jeerson Medical College Alumni Association.

1969Thomas Jeerson University was established and added nursing, health professions and graduate studies to its academic programs.

2014The Sidney Kimmel Foundation made a $110 million gift to Jeerson Medical College – the largest single gift in the history of Thomas Jeerson University. Through this gift the college was renamed the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jeerson University. The funds support endowment programs to benefit student scholarships, faculty retention, campus facilities, clinical instruction and technology.

TODAY

1898-1907Due to Jeerson’s clinical success the hospital expanded with three new buildings within nine years.

JeffMD: A CURRICULUM FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

As a student in the Class of 2024, you will contribute to Sidney KImmel Medical College’s proud tradition of excellence.

You will have many opportunities to develop as a leader in your profession — in clinical settings, research labs and

community service. JeffMD, Sidney KImmel Medical College’s curriculum, will support you by giving you sound

fundamentals, combined with elements you can customize to your interests. You will find strong integration of

clinical experience and science instruction throughout your four years here.

Mission

To educate physicians who will serve, lead and discover.

Values

Put the patient first | Foster respect and humility | Insist on integrity and personal responsibility

Develop a passion for learning, collaborative practice and continuous reflection

B E NE F IT S OF Jef fMD

A patient-centered perspective. Faculty and team members will constantly ask you to examine the doctor you are

becoming through a patient’s lenses:

“What do my patients need me to know, and how do they want me to act?”

Early clinical experience. Soon after matriculation, you will find yourself in contact with patients, developing clinical

skills and knowledge while contributing to patient care in ways both meaningful and appropriate to your early stage

in medical school. As your knowledge and skills grow, so will your involvement in patient care.

Contextual learning. A constant interplay among foundational science, development of clinical skills and knowledge,

and definition of a professional persona will create context and relevance for new learning.

Scholarly Inquiry. Independent projects, which you will be able to shape with input from a faculty mentor, will hone

your critical thinking skills. During time built into your schedule, you might choose to focus on clinical and individual

research, medical education, population health, healthcare systems, health policy, humanities, design or digital health.

A range of instructional formats. You will do much of your learning in small groups that give teams responsibility

for problem-solving. Lectures, simulation, individual study and reflection will also remain as essential elements of

the instructional portfolio.

Jef fMD FACU LT Y

“The emphasis was on knowledge acquisition, and medicine is so much more than being

able to recall knowledge — it’s clinical situations, critical thinking, reasoning, being aware

that patients are from different backgrounds than your own,” “This change provides a

more hands-on, experiential approach that accentuates humanism in medicine.”

Steven K. Herrine, MD Professor of Medicine,

Vice Dean, Academic Affairs and

Undergraduate Medical Education

“Doctors not only need to have the knowledge, but also to be good at communicating

and helping to navigate a complex healthcare system. Also, in the old days, it was all

about acute care in the hospital. You either solved the illness or you didn’t. Today, a lot

of medicine is about managing complicated chronic diseases as a medical team in an

outpatient setting.”

Deborah Ziring, MD Senior Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and Undergraduate Medical Education

“What impressed me was the students’ enthusiasm for self-directed learning and their

constructive feedback throughout. Students seem more focused on the “why” and “how”

rather than memorizing lists of material. Caring for a patient involves so much more than

just medical knowledge and that is what this curriculum is trying to accomplish.”

Urvashi Vaid, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine Director, Phase 1, JeffMD

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

JeffHOPE

JeffHOPE (Health, Opportunity, Prevention and Education) is the largest student-run free clinic nationally by number

of members, number of patients treated and by operating budget. Under the guidance of Jefferson’s Department of

Family and Community Medicine, we hold weekly clinics at four homeless shelters and one needle exchange program in

Philadelphia. Our mission is to address the psychosocial needs of our patients, and empower them with the knowledge,

resources and support to engage them in long-term professional healthcare.

This can mean connecting patients to social services, collaborating with them in

managing chronic health conditions, or simply being a source of support they can

count on each week. Our secondary mission is to educate healthcare students and

professionals about the social and medical issues surrounding homelessness. The

men, women, and children we see are often facing several challenges aside from

their temporary or chronic homelessness, such as medical or mental illness, food

insecurity, job insecurity or domestic violence, to name a few. JeffHOPE teaches

us about our community, about people, and plays an immeasurably valuable role in

shaping us into capable and caring physicians.

PU E NTE S DE SALU D

The purpose of this organization is to ensure the health and wellness of South Philadelphia’s rapidly growing Latino

immigrant community. It serves to educate future generations of community advocates, health care providers, educators

and leaders by providing opportunities for responsible and respectful community engagement. Puentes de Salud

believes that a comprehensive strategy to promote wellness in any community must also target the social determinants of

health. This organization offers Jefferson students in all disciplines the opportunity to engage in this community.

RE F UGE E HEALTH PARTNE RS

The goal of Refugee Health Partners is to improve and advocate for the health and well-being of the refugee population

in Philadelphia. Over the past four years, Refugee Health Partners has sought to work closely with all populations and age

groups of the refugee community. Through different projects such as student-run health clinics, health fairs, and health

education classes, Refugee Health Partners empowers refugees to be active participants in their own community and

their own healthcare. Refugee Health Partners aims to work within the community to train future health professionals to

practice competent and conscious refugee care.

CHINATOWN CL IN IC

Every Wednesday night beginning at 5:30, Jefferson students volunteer at Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church in

Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood. Free medical services, such as flu shots are provided to patients facing language

and cultural barriers which makes accessing health services difficult. “The clinic’s mission is to try to help as many people

as we can,” says Dr. Wayne Bond Lau. “We see anywhere from 35 to 45 people in the span of about four hours.”

CLOWNS FOR ME DIC INE THE J E F F E RSON

Clowns for Medicine entertain patients at Jefferson Hospital, so that they are distracted or relieved from their health

concerns. The Clowns’ typical events occur on Friday evenings, when they dress up in goofy clown attire and march

through some of the local streets on the way to the hospital. When arriving at patient floors, they visit with patients (usually

recommended to by nursing staff) run through a 5-10 minute skit we have prepared. There is no membership criteria for

the clowning club, but historically it has been medical students.

J E F F CARE S FOR K IDS

This organization gives students opportunities to work with children with disabilities, both through direct interaction and

shadowing experts in the field. Activities include volunteering at the HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy and at the

Variety Club after-school program for children with intellectual disabilities, and shadowing at Jefferson and the Cerebral

Palsy Clinic at the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children.

J E F F E RSON CHAMB E R ORCHE S TR A

The Jefferson Chamber Orchestra plays chamber music for both public and private audiences. The Chamber Orchestra

has performed for weddings, cocktail parties, receptions and private parties including the Sidney KImmel Medical College

White Coat Ceremony and Alumni Weekend. The group performs together at least four times over the course of the

year and have performed as part of the Dean’s Concert Series.

Jef fLGB TQ

JeffLGBTQ serves as an educational resource, support, and outreach group, and as a social/professional networking

organization for sexual and gender minorities including gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer students. JeffLGBTQ

is open to all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. JeffLGBTQ coordinates educational events and

hosts speakers to increase awareness within the Jefferson community regarding LGBTQ life and health disparities.

S TU DE NT NATIONAL ME DICAL ASSOCIATION

Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority

medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent,

culturally competent and socially conscious physicians. SNMA programs are designed to serve the health needs of

underserved communities and communities of color.

VETE R ANS HEALTH IN IT IATIVE

VHI focuses on addressing the gap in medical education pertaining to the Veteran population and their unique healthcare

needs by advocating for awareness of the Veteran population in Philadelphia, advancing medical student knowledge regarding

their health needs, and arming students with tools to use in the clinical setting. Typical events hosted by VHI include speakers,

panel discussions with Veterans, community engagement events, clinical learning experiences, and others.

SUSAN MCFADDEN Executive Director

Welcome! This publication introduces you to the University Office of Student Financial Aid at Thomas Jefferson University. The Office assists students in obtaining resources to finance a medical education, as well as serves as an educational resource for financial planning and debt management.

We encourage all prospective students to begin the financial planning process early. To assist in this process, we have included “Financial Aid Application Requirements.” This itemized list highlights the basic requirements for applying for financial aid at Jefferson and emphasizes key dates for completing the process. This section also includes information for students who may not be eligible for need-based financial aid. The “Requirements” section offers more detailed information, whereas “Applying for Financial Aid At-A-Glance” is a quick reference.

We have also included a segment on educational indebtedness giving some specific data regarding prior student borrowing at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. As a point of reference, we have included a copy of the SKMC student budget for the current 2019–2020 academic year. This will offer you a benchmark from which to estimate your expenses for 2020–2021.

For many of you, financing your medical education necessitates borrowing, maybe for the first time. To help you make wise choices, we offer information about specific loan programs.

The section entitled “Loan Facts” provides an overview of the loan programs available to medical students. This information is especially important as it outlines the specific obligations of each loan program.

Please plan to contact the Financial Aid Office for further information.

Thomas Jefferson University, in accordance with local, state, and federal law, is committed to providing equal educational and employment opportunities for all persons, without regard to race, color, national and ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, sex, age, disability, or veteran’s status. What constitutes a “complete” financial aid application?A completed Financial Aid Application (in applying for all institutionally administered funds) consists of the following:

• A processed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) document at fafsa.ed.gov or using the myStudentAid mobile app; Sidney Kimmel Medical College federal school code: 010021. The application process opens on October 1, 2020 Parental section must be completed to be considered for university owned financial aid.

• The 2020–2021 FAFSA should be completed using the 2018 Federal Income Tax Return via the IRS Data Retrieval Transfer (DRT) process.

• A completed Jefferson Institutional Application and Verification Worksheet (on Banner Web).

• Signed photocopy of a parent’s 2018 Federal Income Tax Return (or non-filing statement if a tax return is not required to be filed).

What parental info must be supplied? To be considered for Jefferson Institutional Aid, parental financial information must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office as part of your Financial Aid Application. A photocopy of the parent 2018 Federal Income Tax Return must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office and all parental information must be included on all appropriate sections on the FAFSA and Verification Worksheet. Please note that no exceptions may be made.

When are financial aid applications available?Starting on or about November 1, Financial Aid information is emailed to all accepted students. Students accepted after November 1 will be sent an email within one week of their acceptance date. Instructions for accessing online financial aid applications are included with this communication. Please note that only accepted students are able to access the online financial aid application. Late accepts should file applications within two weeks of acceptance.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen?A student must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. to receive institutional financial aid as well as aid through federal loan and scholarship programs. No exceptions will be made. A limited number of private loan programs from outside vendors are available to students who are neither a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident, but have a credit-worthy U.S. citizen cosigner. For information contact the University Office of Financial Aid.

What is Entrance Counseling? For student loans, you are required to complete a federal online Entrance Counseling Session at Studentloans.gov. This is to provide you with all of the pertinent information about federal loans you may borrow. It is not necessary to wait until you have completed Entrance Counseling to submit loan applications. If you are applying for a Federal Direct Stafford or Graduate PLUS loan, application materials should be submitted between May 1, 2019 and July 1, 2019. Loans may not be disbursed until the Entrance Counseling requirement has been met. The annual maximum for the Federal Direct Stafford loan is $44,944 (for an 11-month academic year). Interest rate for 2019–2020 is 6.08%

When will I learn if I’m eligible for University Scholarships?Students who have completed all financial aid application materials (listed above) by November 1 can expect notification of eligibility between December and January. Financial aid eligibility notifications are sent to your Jefferson email account will continue to be sent daily until orientation.

What is the Federal Direct Stafford Loan?To be considered for institutional aid, you must plan to first borrow at least $10,000 in the Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program. This means that any institutional aid you may be eligible for will be over and above this amount. Please note that with the passage of the Budget Control Act of 2011, as of July 1, 2012, the Federal Subsidized Direct Stafford Loan will cease to exist for graduate students. The maximum Federal Direct Stafford Loan will remain, but this loan will have accruing interest while in school.

Page 29: Sidney Kimmel Medical CollegeSKMC Tour Ambassadors 4 p.m. Office of Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives Meet and Greet Colin Yost, Peace Nosa-Omorogiuiwa, Saloni Parikh, Jessica Amoako

Please Note: Some of these facts may apply to other medical schools as well as Sidney Kimmel Medical College. It is recommended that you contact each school in which you are interested to inquire about particular institutional policies and deadlines. Eligibility for all forms of financial aid is determined annually and is contingent upon the availability of funding.

How can I apply for the Federal Direct Stafford Loan? All students applying for Federal Direct Stafford Loan funds are required to complete both:

• A separate Master Promisory Note (MPN) (the signed form acknowledging responsibility for repaying the debt).

• Federal Entrance Counseling at Studentloans.gov. To complete the Direct Lending Master Promissory Note (MPN), please follow these instructions: ~ Go to the Studentloans.gov web site. ~ Click Sign In and complete login with your FSA User ID. Then click Complete Master Promissory Note. ~ Follow the steps given and select Thomas Jefferson University when school name is requested.

Students who need additional funding beyond the Federal Direct Stafford Loan and/or university funding have alternative ways to finance their medical education which includes the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, service commitment programs, and private loans (see below).

Federal Direct Graduate PLUS LoanThe U.S. Department of Education makes Federal Direct PLUS Loans to credit-worthy graduate or professional students that can be borrowed to supplement the Federal Direct Stafford Loan and help fund a medical school education. Keeping loans from one source (i.e., federal) is very helpful in the repayment process. For more information about the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, see https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/loans/plus/grad-professional.

Service Commitment ScholarshipsThis category includes the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) as well as military scholarships (AFHPS) through the Air Force, Army, or Navy. Both the NHSC and the AFHPS programs offer full payment of tuition and health insurance, and a monthly stipend to meet living expenses. The service obligation requires one year for each year of support, with a minimum two-year commitment for the National Health Service Corps and minimum three-year commitment for Armed Forces Service Scholarships. Students interested in obtaining additional information about these programs may contact the Financial Aid Office or the specific governing/recruiting agencies at the telephone numbers listed:

National Health Service Corps 800-221-9393 Air Force 215-978-0138 Army 215-232-2047 Navy 215-697-3974

Private Loan ProgramsStudents needing additional educational loans may be eligible to borrow through non-subsidized, private loan programs. The parameters for these programs are included in the “Loan Facts” chart on the last page. However, as these programs may be higher cost loans, we encourage students to consider all options, including consideration of a Federal Graduate PLUS Loan or securing a loan from parents, before choosing a private loan. Information about additional alternative loan sources is available at Jefferson.edu/financialaid.

How do I know if I’m credit worthy?Lenders administering most alternative loan programs must determine the applicant to be creditworthy prior to the loan application being approved. Loan applications may be denied if you have unresolved credit problems. For a copy of your free credit report, go to Annualcreditreport.com or contact these agencies:

Equifax (equifax.com) 888-548-7878 Transunion (transunion.com) 800-888-4213 Experian (experian.com) 888-397-3742

What if I am delinquent on a loan?To be eligible for any federal, state, or institutional loan funds, students cannot be in default on any prior educational loans. If a student demonstrates financial need, but is ineligible for federal grants and/or loans due to default or delinquency status on a prior loan, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University will not commit institutional funds to remedy the default status or to compensate for the ineligibility for these funds. It is the student’s responsibility to resolve all problems involving loan delinquencies, defaults, negative credit rating, and any other circumstances that would result in the student being ineligible to borrow through any federal or private loan program.
