This is part 5 of the list of type specimens and original materials of the taxa described by Siebold and Zuccarini from Japan. Part 5 concerns the taxa belonging to the families ranging from Saxifragaceae to Euphorbiaceae according to the 12th Engler system (Melchior 1964). The followings five new combination names are proposed. These are: Amygdalus persica L. f. pendula (Siebold) H. Ohba & S. Akiyama, stat. nov., Amygdalus persica L. f. stellata (Siebold & de Vriese) H. Ohba & S. Akiyama, stat. nov., Amygdalus persica L. f. versicolor (Siebold) H. Ohba & S. Akiyama, comb. et stat. nov., Armeniaca mume (Siebold & Zucc.) K. Koch f. pendula (Siebold) H. Ohba & S. Akiyama, comb. et stat. nov., Cerasus itosakura (Siebold) H. Ohba & S. Akiyama, comb. nov.

The specimen designated here as the lectotype of Deutzia crenata Siebold & Zucc. was not annotated by Siebold and/or Zuccarini, but the branch on the far right corresponds particularly well with the plant illustrated in Table 6 of their Flora Japonica under D. crenata. Both the far right branch of the specimen and the branch in the illustration have widely to moderately ovate petiolate leaves with an acute apex and widely cuneate to truncate or sometimes shallowly cordate base and filaments with terminal teeth, and are within the range of D. crenata.
Siebold and Zuccarini distinguished Deutzia crenata from D. scabra Thunb. by 1) the shape of leaves, i.e. short petiolate, widely ovate with acute apex, rounded or subcordate base, lightly or finely “tenuiter” crenulate margins vs. subsessile or very short petiolate, ovate with acuminate apex, rounded or subcordate base, serrulate margins, 2) stellate hairs on upper surface with 4–6 vs. 3 or 4 arms, and 3) filaments with two terminal teeth vs. without teeth. Except for the presence of teeth on the filaments these two species are not clearly distinguished by the features given by them.
Usually D. crenata is distinguished by the petiolate leaves (usually oblong with acute or acuminate apex) and dentate filaments; D. scabra has sessile leaves (usually ovate with obtuse apex) on flowering branches and toothless filaments. In and around Nagasaki the range of variation of the leaves, especially in the shape and length of the petioles, and also teeth on the filaments, overlaps between the two species.
in D. scabra the leaves are usually ovate or orbicular-ovate or widely oblong-ovate, although in the plants around Nagasaki the leaves show a tendency toward being oblong to oblong-ovate, as illustrated in Table 7 of Flora Japonica. As pointed by Hara (1957), these plants belong to
a local variety, var. sieboldiana (Maxim.) H. Hara (D. sieboldii Koernicke) with different tendencies from var. scabra in leaf shape and teeth of filaments.
A specimen collected by Siebold in 1829, L0170284, consists of two species, D. crenata and D. scabra, i.e., a branch with flowers mounted in the central part of the sheet surrounded by an elongate branch of D. crenata corresponds well with the drawing in Table 7 of Flora Japonica under D. scabra, which is D. scabra var. sieboldiana.
One of the original specimens collected by Bürger, M0120974, consists of two branches. Both branches have narrowly oblong-ovate leaves (with acute or acuminate apex and truncate or widely rounded base), which are sessile or nearly so, except the uppermost ones on the flowering branches. The right hand branch has a paniculate inflorescence somewhat transitional to a pyramidal inflorescence with numerous flowers. The filaments have two rather distinct teeth at the apex. We consider these plants to be D. crenata, but doubt whether they might be Deutzia scabra var. sieboldiana still remains.

Original material: Legit Dr Siebold in Japonia. Communicavit Prof. Zuccarini anno 1843, Herbarium Zuccarinii (M0120973) [Category 2b].
The lectotype specimen, M0120972, has no annotation by Siebold and/or Zuccarini, however Zuccarini retained the name Parnassia punctulata S. et Z. on the label. The epithet “mucronata” apparently derives from the description “... differt ... foliis omnibus mucronato-acutis ...” or “[cauline leaves] sessili e basi cordata suborbiculari mucronato.”
The epithet punctulata appears to be related to the “ferrygino-punctatis” feature of the leaves. it might be thought that mucronata and punctulata are candidates for the epithet.
Siebold s.n. in Leiden (L0170304) may be original material. Three plants on the right side of the sheet accompany Siebold’s annotation “Parnassia palustris an nova species” and “Parnassia Japonica, Sieb;” and a plant of the left side (no. 134) accompanies a sketch of a gland showing a mucronate (or bifurcate) apex. The epithet mucronata might possibly be derived from this characteristic of the gland.
Siebold s.n. in Leiden (L0170302), with his annotation “Parnassia palustris. Nov. lusus Higo.” is also attributed to this species, but it is not certain that it is original material.

Gard. ii. n. 375 [p. 102–103] icon. xylogr.” in synonymy, and four specimens collected by Siebold (L0329021, this is the lectotype of P. satsumanus Siebold ex Miq.), Keiske (L0329023), Mohnike (L0170308) and Oldham 258 (L 908, 24-200). These four specimens were used for the description of Philadelphus satsumanus by Miquel.
Hu (1955) distinguished P. satsumi Siebold ex Lindl. & Paxt. and P. satsumanus Siebold ex Miq. by the pubescence of the leaves, i.e. uniformly pubescent in P. satsumanus and glabrous, except pubescent primary nerves and axils on lower surface, in P. satsumi. Miquel’s original material (syntypes) used for the description of P. satsumanus, however, have nearly glabrous leaves except for the veins and the axils.

Japanese name: Genpei-kiku-momo (nov.); Kiku-momo, Genji-guruma (Makino 1908).
Makino (1908) reported “Kiku-momo” and “Genji-guruma” as Japanese names, but this plant has both rose and white flowers. A new Japanese name, Genpei-kiku-momo [meaning plant with narrow petals and with both rose and white flowers], is presented here.
Lectotype (designated here): illustration t. [6] in Ann. Hort. Bot. (fl. Jardin) 2: t. [6, between pages 64 and 65] (1859).
We designate the illustration in the protologue as the lectotype. The plant illustrated in the table has double flowers with both pink and white narrow petals. in L, M and MAK there are some specimens of the cultivar of Amygdalus persica, but none of them represents var. stellata Siebold & de Vries. One of them in L, L0102983, is a specimen annotated “Amygdalus persica erecta, Genpei too” by Siebold. “Genpei too” means having both pink and white flowers. That specimen resembles var. stellata with bicolored double flowers, but the petals are wide. in M there is also a specimen, M0154003, named Persica vulgaris var. flore pleno albo with double petaled flowers, but appears to be only white.

Ohba mistakenly treated Prunus itosakura Siebold as an illegitimate name (nomen nudum) and adopted Cerasus spachiana Lavallée ex E. Otto (in Hamburger Garten-Blumenzeitung 35: 57, 1879) according to Sargent (1888) for it (Ohba 2001, 2012, Ohba et al. 2007). However, it is recognized as a legitimate name with a short diagnosis. Siebold wrote on this species: “Cerasus ramulis pendulis florentibus adornans idolorum sacra.” The “Cerasus ramulis pendulis” [Cerasus with pendulous branchlets], is considered sufficient for a diagnosis. in Siebold’s time, this was the only flowering cherry with pendulous branchlets.
Maximowicz (1883) published Prunus pendula Siebold ex Maxim. and cited Synopsis
Plantae Oeconomicarum (1830, No. 368[sic]) as the source of the Siebold name. Number 368 of Siebold’s Synopsis Plantae Oeconomicarum is neither Cerasus nor Prunus but a species of Gramineae, “CCxVii. GRAMiNEA, Makomo, Japon.”

Prunus jamasakura, native to Japan, was validly published by Koidzumi (1911), but he did not designate a lectotype. The specimen, L0834829, consists of three branches with simple petaled flowers. The leaves on a post flowering branch are narrowly oblong-obovate or elliptic with glabrous surfaces and margins and single (partly double) serrations and have interpetiolar glands. These features characterize Cerasus jamasakura.

Siebold and Zuccarini cited Rubus idaeus [auct. non L.: Thunb., fl. Jap.: 216, 1784] as a synonym of Rubus thunbergii. Seven specimens in Thunberg’s collection (UPS, Herb. Thunberg nos. 12261–12267) are identified as Rubus idaeus. We have selected no. 12266 as the lectotype which appears to be the most representative among them.
Specimens used for the description of Rubus thunbergii by Siebold and Zuccarini are as follows:

Siebold effectively published Sorbus toringo with the description “Arbuste nain à feuilles florales elliptiques et raméales trilobées. Couvert au premier printemps de fleurs blanches et rosées moins grandes que celles de notre Pyrus spectabilis.”
Veldkamp selected the specimens L0176022 and L0329344 as the neotype of Sorbus toringo Siebold. L0329344 (Siebold s.n.) has neither annotation nor notes by Siebold himself, but L0176022 has Siebold’s annotation “Sorbus tôringo” and is regarded as original material.

Although the specimen M0154017 was transferred to M from Siebold in 1842 (two years later than the publication of the name), we believe that it is original material.
262) Spiraea thunbergii Siebold, Syn. Pl. Oeconom.: 65 (1830), non Blume (1827).
Present treatment: Spiraea thunbergii Siebold ex Blume, Bijdr. 17: 1115 (1827).
Japanese name: Yuki-yanagi; Jukiyanagi (Siebold 1830).
Lectotype (designated here): Japan. Thunberg s.n. (L0144310, van Royen Herbarium) (fig. 144).
This is a new name for the Spiraea reported by Thunberg as S. crenata L. in his Flora Japonica (1784, p. 210). Siebold cited Spiraea crenata [misprinted as “erenata”][auct. non Pallas; Thunb., fl. Jap.: 210, 1784] as a synonym of Spiraea thunbergii. from Spiraea crenata in Thunberg’s collection the lectotype must be selected.
Thunberg’s collections were deposited mainly in UPS (Spiraea crenata: nos. 12070–12072) and partly in the van Royen Herbarium (now in L). Since Siebold’s annotation “Dolichos polystachyos Th.” is on a Thunberg specimen of Wisteria in the van Royen collection, we believe that Siebold had an opportunity to examine Thunberg’s specimens in the van Royen Herbarium and we have selected a lectotype of Spiraea thunbergii from the van Royen’s collection.
Spiraea thunbergii Siebold was published validly by Blume in 1827, earlier than by Siebold himself in 1830. So Spiraea thunbergii Siebold (1830) is a later homonym (see below no. 262b).
Specimens used for the preparation of Siebold’s Spiraea thunbergii are as follows:
Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L0176042) [Category 2]. Japonia. Hb. von Siebold (L0176041) [Category 2].
The specimen L0176041 is considered to be the one used for the description of Spiraea thunbergii Siebold & Zucc., and the basis for the illustration in Flora Japonica, Tab. 69. L0176042 is the lectotype of Spiraea thunbergii Siebold ex Blume.

Japanese name: Gen-no-shôko. Lectotype (designated here): Japonia.
Nagasaki, Kosido. Sept. Oct. Herb. Thunberg s.n. (L0059752) (fig. 158).
Original material: Japonia. Thunberg s.n. (L0059753).
This is a new name for Geranium reported by Thunberg as G. palustris L. (UPS Thunberg collection nos. 15733 and 15734) in his Flora Japonica (1784, p. 268). Siebold & Zuccarinii (1845) cited Geranium palustris as a synonym of Geranium thunbergii. So from Geranium palustris in Thunberg’s collection the lectotype must be selected.
As mentioned under Spiraea thunbergii (p. 295) we believe that Siebold was able to
302 植物研究雑誌 第 89巻 第 5号 2014年 10月
examine Thunberg’s specimens in the van Royen Herbarium.
Thunberg wrote: “pedunculis bifloris longissimis declinatis, petalis integris, foliis quinquelobis incisis. ... Nagasaki, in Kosido, alibi...” This description well corresponds to Thunberg’s specimens, (L0059752) and (L0059753) in the van Royen collection and Siebold’s specimens (L0176062, L0176063) identified G. thunbergii by Siebold himself.
The following specimens were also used for the preparation of the treatment of Geranium thunbergii by Siebold & Zuccarini:
Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L0176062). Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L0176063). Japonia. Herb. Thunberg (L0059753).
According to ICN Art. 38, Siebold and Zuccarini’s Geranium thunbergii is regarded as a new species, although Yeo (1992) did not accept Geranium thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. as such.
299b) Geranium thunbergii Siebold ex Lindl. & Paxton in Paxton’s flow. Gard. 1: 186, f. 115 (1851).

Japanese name: Gen-no-shôko. Lectotype (designated here): illustration in
Paxton’s flow. Gard. 1: 186, f. 115 (1851). Though Yeo (1992) regarded Lindl. &
Paxton as the author of Geranium thunbergii Siebold, the name was legitimately published by Siebold and Zuccarini as mentioned above.

Japanese name: Ko-mikan-sô.
Lectotype (designated here): Communicavit de Siebold anno 1842, Herbarium Zuccarinii (M0088455) (fig. 163).
Original material: Japonia. [Siebold s.n.] (MAK S1542) [Category 2].
Siebold and Zuccarini (1845) compared Phyllanthus lepidocarpus with “Ph. Niruri Thunb. fl. Jap. p. 56” with a question mark. in L and M there are no specimens determined as P. lepidocarpus by Siebold or Zuccarini. The lectotype designated here, M0088455, was annotated at first as “Phyllanthus Niruri L.” and then “P. echinatus S. & Z.” by Zuccarini. Phyllanthus echinatus Siebold & Zucc. was not published, but the epithet echinatus has a meaning similar to lepidocarpus. We consider that Siebold and Zuccarini described P. lepidocarpus based on this specimen.
306) Stillingia japonica Siebold & Zucc. in Abh. Math.-Phys. Cl. Königl. Bayer. Akad. Wiss. 4(2): 145 (1845).
Present treatment: Neoshirakia japonica (Siebold & Zucc.) Esser in Blumea 43(1): 129 (1998).

Peter van Welzen designated a specimen “Japonia. Siebold s.n. (L0081028)” as the lectotype (Esser 1998) but this is not original material because it lacks an annotation by Siebold and/or Zuccarini.

satsumanus (バイカウツギ),Sorbus toringo (ズミ), Geranium thunbergii (ゲンノショウコ),Phyllanthus lepidocarpus (コミカンソウ)では選定について問題点などをコメントした. Amygdalus persica f. pendula(ベニシダレモモ),Amygdalus persica f. stellata(ゲンペイキクモモ,新称),Amygdalus persica f. versicolor(ゲンペイモモ),Armeniaca mume f. pendula(シダレウメ),Cerasus itosakura(エドヒガン)の新学名を提唱した.
