employees. This puts pressure on
Injecdesign’s staff to prepare quotationsand complete mold designs as quickly asthe larger companies do. But local compe-tition is only part of what has become avery challenging business climate for moldmakers in Europe. Chinese companies arealso competing in the EU for mold work, with prices that are extraordinarily low. They have driven mold prices down to apoint where many of Injecdesign’s compet-itors have either gone out of business, been purchased by larger companies or arestruggling to stay a oat.
Increasing revenuesIn contrast, Injecdesign is thriving. Thecompany’s revenues have increased 300percent since 2000, even as mold priceshave dropped dramatically and raw mate-rial costs have increased over that time. Itsstaff has grown from two people to thecurrent nine. And its customer base con-tinues to spread into new countries.
Sérgio Pinho, Injecdesign’s general man-ager, credits much of his company’ssuccess to the added value Injecdesign can
offer, particularly to small and medium-size manufacturing companies. And forthis, he credits his company’s designsoftware, the NX™ digital product develop-ment system and the Solid Edge® CADprogram from Siemens PLM Software. “Ourdesign software allows us to work fast andnot make mistakes, which means we canmatch or beat anyone else’s quality anddelivery time,” he says. “It also lets us
collaborate with customers in a way that
they value – to the point that even thoughwe sometimes quote higher costs, we stillwin business.”
Injecdesign purchased NX and Solid Edgefrom Cad ow, a Siemens PLM Softwarereseller located in Marinha Grande,Portugal. “Cad ow delivers the combina -tion of high-quality software and goodservice,” says Pinho. “They have been veryhelpful to us in supporting our vision.”
Injecdesign nds NX and Solid Edge to becomplementary programs, according toPinho. He originally purchased NX to getthe high-end modeling functionality heneeded to design parts (and the corre-sponding molds) with complex shapes. Then he equipped his technical depart-ment with NX Mold Design to streamlinethe design process for molds. Recently headded one seat of Solid Edge, which isused for parts and part assemblies.
Better service, faster deliveryOne of the services that sets Injecdesignapart is how closely it works with its cus-
tomers. Pinho often takes his laptop andNX to the customer’s facility where heworks with the company’s engineers inter-actively to design a product. “Often they
just have some sketches or even just anidea of what they want,” Pinho explains. “Imodel the product in 3D and we look atevery potential problem. Then I go backand design the molds.”
