Purpose:The purpose of the club is to promote green politics and was the first large scale environmental preservation organization in the entire world, and currently engages in lobbying politicians to support the green movement. Recent focuses have been green energy, preventing climate change, and opposing coal.

2.4 Million Members !

Issues It Supports:Forest Protection - They believe the wilderness and land should be preserved. If we look at the scientific facts, we can see that lack of trees can be detrimental to our society in our future due to the fact it creates oxygen.

Green Transportation - Advocate for state spending on commuter rail, transit options (bus, streetcars, etc), bike and pedestrian infrastructure.

Clean Energy - Stabilize our climate by stopping new coal plants and retire existing coal and scale up clean energy: solar, wind and energy efficiency - which are scientifically more healthy for our Earth. Other forms of energy are bad for the ozone.

Issues It Opposes: Opposition to coal - Believes that the burning of coal is very harmful for our own lungs and the Earth itself. They are also

opposed to Nuclear energy, which is even worse. Both can be detrimental to our world because of all the chemicals it emits

Opposition to dams - The club is against dams because it believes it is unhealthy for the Earth as well, because of the destroying of multiple trees and land.

Legislation2007 - Club encourages Congress to pass a Renewable Energy Standard that requires utilities to produce 15% of their power from clean, renewable energy by 2020.

2005 - Club legal victory forces Bush administration to abandon plans for a logging project on the Grand Canyon's north rim. Club holds first-ever Sierra Summit - a national convention and exposition.

2002 - A bill was signed into law protecting nearly 500,000 acres of Mojave Desert wilderness in southern Nevada. Another enacted wilderness bill added about 57,000 acres to areas in central California.

Presidential Candidates Supported/donated:They have supported and donated money to the current President, Barack Obama.

Ideology:

They support protecting the environment, so obviously, they support Democrats and Green party candidates over Republicans, as the GOP consistently votes against any protections for the environment. If a GOP candidate DID support the environment--both in words and in voting records, the Sierra Club would have no problem supporting that candidate.

Article:“Fix it, don't toss it, Sierra Club says” by ‘Anonymous’, posted on October 11, 2015

“The current movement towards zero waste, sustainability and local resilience will be explored in a Sierra Club program Oct. 15. “

The article speaks on an event the Sierra Club hosted. It explains some of the statements they said, including opposition of unnecessary waste. They attempted to give tips on how the individual can help do their part to help the world environmentally. The article also speaks on the resilience of the interest group to not give up and to continue to fight for their beliefs to be pushed in our nation.

“Ecologically aware individuals who are concerned about discarding useful items into the waste stream can instead learn how to re-make and re-use them as practical articles.”

Evidently, this supports my interest groups because it praises it for it’s courage and resilience, as well as gives insight on a few issues they are concerned about.

Poll:I asked 10 of my relatives about the interest group the Sierra Club and what they thought of it. Each one of them expressed praise for it, saying that they loved what the club was doing and how they were conducting themselves in a logical, but aggressive way. This makes perfect sense because of all the recent moves the Club has had, such as getting the President to stop an Arctic Drilling Lease. Our club tries our hardest, through lobbying and other ways, to get stuff done. We want an Earth that is not only green for our lifetimes, but for the the next generations.
