Dear SIFE team Advisors, Faculty and Students:

Welcome to a new SIFE program year! The SIFE USA team is excited to work with you and your academic institution to empower even more lives in 2012-2013. Last year, over 530 SIFE USA teams used the positive power of business to directly impact millions of people in need. You gave entrepreneurs a strong foundation for long-term success, provided the unemployed with skills to land a job, helped families with their fight against debt, improved sustainability by reducing waste, broke the cycle of hunger, and the list goes on and on - your projects are offering those in need the avenues to improve their quality of life and standard of living – you are transforming communities! In addition to the change you created for others, it is inspiring to see your personal growth. As you complete projects, I am always in awe of the socially responsible leaders with strong communication, leadership and project management skills you become. Whether you are new or a veteran of SIFE, this 2012-2013 SIFE USA Competitions, Awards & Scholarships Guide, along with the global SIFE Team Handbook, Best Practices Guides and Online Training Modules will provide information and the resources needed for operating under the SIFE brand. In addition to these items, we encourage your eligible team members to attend the inaugural Fall Leadership Conference, September 28-30 in Washington, D.C. This inspiring, issues-driven conference will replace the multiple Fall Training Conferences we have held in the past and will be well worth your time. Our team will continue to help you build a quality and sustainable SIFE program. As always, we are here to serve you. We appreciate that you have a busy schedule; our goal is to keep your program running smoothly with resources, ideas and mentoring. Together, we truly are making a difference. I look forward to another year of empowering people to live better lives in a sustainable way! Warm regards,

Donna Patterson President, SIFE USA

This guide is designed to serve as a companion piece to the 2012-2013 SIFE Team Handbook. Please reference the handbook for a complete understanding of the SIFE worldwide:

1. Organizational Overview & Membership Guidelines2. Establishing an Effective Team3. Developing Quality Projects4. Preparing for Competition5. Sample Forms & Documents (Appendix)

IntroductionWithin the first section of the guide you will find an explanation of the guide, an Overview of SIFE USA and Important Dates for the 2012-2013 SIFE USA program year.

SIFE USA CompetitionsSIFE competitions are challenging, team-oriented events that create a sense of accountability and motivation for teams to continually improve the quality of their projects. They also provide an opportunity for collaboration and best-practice sharing, further strengthening the value of the learning experience and the overall effectiveness of the program.

In the United States, the competition process begins with a series of SIFE USA Regional Competitions held each year in March and April in cities across the nation. From the regional events top teams will gain the opportunity to advance to the SIFE USA National Exposition held in May. After three days of activities progressing through the opening, semi-final and final rounds of competition, one team will be named the SIFE USA National Champion and be invited to represent the United States at the SIFE World Cup.

The 2012-2013 SIFE Team Handbook provides SIFE teams with full details regarding the SIFE Judging Criterion and the competition process. This guide will provide you with competition details which are specific to SIFE USA, as well as the SIFE USA competition dates and locations on pages 9-18.

SIFE USA Project PartnershipsOn pages 19-27 within this guide you will find details about a number of exciting Project Partnerships. Through project partnerships, SIFE USA teams have the opportunity to focus on some of the most important issues affecting our world today. Sponsored by SIFE USA partner companies, these programs offer teams a focused set of objectives and often provide project grants, prize money and special recognition for the teams who achieve the most success addressing these targeted issues.

Scholarships, Honors & AwardsNo SIFE team exists on its own. Each successful SIFE team can count on a long list of individuals who have contributed time, energy and creativity on its behalf. SIFE USA has established several special honors and awards to provide teams with the opportunity to earn national recognition for their strongest supporters.

Each of these scholarships, honors and awards have their own entry format. All submissions are reviewed and winners are selected by a panel of judges. Complete details of the scholarships, honors and awards can be found on pages 29-43 within this guide.

AppendixAt the back of the guide you will find a few forms which are specific to SIFE USA.

Team Data SheetThe SIFE team Data Sheet helps SIFE keep track and report on the progress of our SIFE teams around the world. If not competing, submit this report by August 31, 2013. If you are competing, this form must be completed by March 8, 2013.

Below are some definitions and instructions to assist you in completing the data sheet:

SIFE CourseSome institutions offer SIFE as a course. These courses are formatted in various ways - often times, with a focus in one of the following areas; entrepreneurship, leadership development, project management, community development, etc. Although this is not a mandate for ensuring success of the SIFE team, SIFE Worldwide is interested in gathering this information.

Number of Active Team MembersAn active team member is defined as a SIFE student who has registered on the SIFE website, contributes 10 hours of service to SIFE, and participates in SIFE team projects or in the efforts contributing to the furthering of the team any time from September 1, 2012 through August 31, 2013.

Number of ProjectsThis number is the total projects your SIFE team completed in the SIFE program year. For purposes of this data sheet, a project can be considered as a single measurable educational/empowerment initiate targeted at a specific audience even if that initiative forms part of a bigger program.

Hours of Team InvolvementThis number is the total hours your team spent impacting others through your community outreach projects. This number includes time spent directly and indirectly including but not limited to meetings, planning, project-related travel, media activities, report writing, SIFE events. Do not include time spent by non-SIFE Team members.

Number of BAB Members InvolvedMost SIFE teams organize a committee of select individuals that offer support to the team throughout the year. The support can be defined in various ways; financial support, project expertise and participation, and advice/guidance in all other areas. This committee, often known as a Business Advisory Board (BAB), is usually comprised of select supporters of the team from their business community as well as institutional/university

administrators. If your team has a BAB, please list here the total number of individuals that are official members of your BAB. Your Faculty Advisor(s) should not be counted as BAB members.

Number of People Directly ImpactedThis is the total number of individuals that were direct beneficiaries of your team’s community outreach projects. This number should only include those outreach projects that fit judging criterion. It should not include estimates of people impacted indirectly as a result of the wider ripple effect of your activities (i.e. team fundraising, team recruiting, etc.).

Number of People Indirectly ImpactedThis is the total number of individuals that were indirect beneficiaries of your team’s community outreach projects. This must be based on those outreach projects that meet the judging criterion and should reflect the number of people impacted indirectly as a result of the wider ripple effect of your activities. In this section, you may include media outreach.

SIFE Team FundingEach team will need to report gifts and grants, campus funding, endowment principle and endowment income, gross revenue and net income from SIFE team business, and other income.

Partnerships/CollaborationsIf your team has partnered with any of the organizations listed or collaborated with another SIFE team or organizations that focus on Microfinance, please place an “X” in the appropriate field. You may mark more than one, if applicable. SIFE would like to track its worldwide involvement with these specific entities/initiatives.

Working Outside Your Home CountryPlease list any and all countries, other than yours, where your team has conducted community outreach projects. Also, please note that all projects abroad must be reported to your SIFE organization before final execution.

Online PresencePlease indicate here if your team is using any of the social sites listed in its project and/or operational endeavors. If your team has an official website address that is functional and active at the time of completing this form, please share the link with us. You may include all websites related to your SIFE team, including specific project-focused sites. Do not include sites of your partner organizations or university (except if link is to a specific page dedicated to your team).

Submission of this form is mandatory to compete.

SIFE__________________________________________________________, hereby confirms that all projects presented are legitimate and were

implemented as stated in the Annual Report and audio/visual presentation.

By appending our signatures to this form we acknowledge and agree that:

• Falsely, consciously, and deliberately over-stating the reach, impact and/or qualitative and quantitative results of any project is an offence.• It is an offense to plagiarize, claim or present a project that our team did not implement or did not contribute to.• With regards to continuing projects, we will indicate in our audio/visual presentation and annual report the specific activities undertaken

within the current program year, thereby clearly differentiating actions taken this year from those of previous years. We will also ensure that the presentation of anticipated/future outcomes are clearly identified as ‘projections’ and not as results already achieved.

• We will provide any additional information and support documentation about our projects upon request by the SIFE office.• Annual Reports have been reviewed by the Team Leader, SIFE Faculty Advisor and an Institutional Administrator.• We will make available the stipulated number of copies of our annual report to the SIFE office and comply with the submission of

all mandatory reports by the competition date.• This form applies to Annual Reports presented this year at all levels of SIFE competitions, including regional, national, continental,

and the SIFE World Cup.

We recognize that appropriate disciplinary action(s) may be taken by the SIFE office should we not honor any of the above points.
