Rationale

The digital revolution is one of the most prominent manifestations of rapid technological

development which has resulted in a significant impact in the field of economy and

finance, where a digital system has addressed various economic sectors, including

services, and contributed to their development, making them more productive, highly

cost-effective and time-saving sectors.

Amongst these contributions are the rapid and efficient delivery of services,

including developing innovations and providing solutions needed by the individual and

the community, including the development of private and governmental institutional

administrative methods for the purpose of increasing their performance through ensuring

a balance between accuracy, transparency and efficiency.

Following the Internet revolution of the last century, having paved the way for the

digital economy, new terms have recently emerged, giving rise to new horizons and

challenges in the business world. For instance, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cryptocurrency

(Bitcoin), Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are new terms creating a digital

space constantly expanding to involve all sectors.

Among the things that aroused interest and controversy in the economic and

financial fields is what is known today as Fintech and Blockchain owing to their role in

changing the features of the economy, and stock and exchange markets as well as their

operating mechanisms, and their capability of providing the same main services as

offered by banks, financial institutions and public services in general. These services

include payments, fiscal arrangements, crowdfunding, and financing and credit facilities.

However, Fintech and Blockchain are better in terms of speed, cost and diversity.

Therefore, Islamic financial institutions are not insulated from these global

improvements and changes in the field of Fintech due to its efficiency, and high accuracy

and transparency. Nevertheless, they are in dire need of Fintech so as to better highlight

their financial resources, especially Zakah and Waqf, and to execute their desired

expenses on, for example, alleviating poverty and achieving real integrated and fair

development. Thus, relying on new technologies, including Blockchain, efficiency is

increasing in accordance with transparency; cost control increases; time is greatly

available; and society regains again confidence in the Waqf and Zakah thanks to Fintech

and Blockchain.

And because of the accuracy and inclusiveness of the digital economy (which is in

process of forming), its transparency and full competition in the market, and its ability to

manage the various risks hovering around the economy and its institutions, including the

financial ones, it is possible to prevent these risks in a timely manner. Hence, it is worth

saying that we are aware of the value and effectiveness of digital technologies for the

Islamic economy and finance, especially if we substantiate the characteristics of Shariah

and Fikh Al Mouamalat dealing with the developments in an inclusive, flexible and

realistic way.

At the 6th Forum of Islamic Finance in Sfax, researchers and experts will present the

prominence of both the Islamic economy and finance in the Age of digital

transformations, and will show how the Fintech and Blockchain give them abundant

opportunities in order that they have the privilege to deal with the economic, social and

developmental issues in general, and particularly poverty, unemployment, and budget

and trade deficit..
