How To Use: • Can be used first as sight word recall, then used as a
spelling challenge. • Print 2-4 copies of colored lists on cardstock (pgs.
12-25), laminate, cut, hole punch, and put on a ring. Hang in classroom or put in bucket.
• Have kids work with a partner to practice reading and orally spelling words (great to use for early finishers). Spelling paper provided in packet, if needed.
• Choose to send home lists with kids to work on at home. Parent letter, parent communication chart and list of words are included to be copied and sent home.
• When ready, test student on the list they are ready to spell (may want to use a volunteer, assistant, or peer partner to complete this) – can spell orally for time constraints or use spelling test paper provided.
• Lists included with a chart to be cut apart and used when testing kids to write what their response was. These can be sent home to show words read or spelled correctly. Great for peers to use when testing each other.
• See rainbow chart display and move kids up the ladder chart when they have successfully completed lists. You can use wooden clips or Velcro strips with their names on them. I recommend printing on a poster maker.
• Bonus list can be used or discarded, based on skill level to complete the challenge. It is difficult, so the kids might get discouraged if it’s the only one left for them to complete the challenge. Two poster charts included with and without bonus list.
• Certificate when complete – two versions, if you want reading and spelling challenge to look different.
Welcome to our Sight Word Challenge!
Dear Parents, Here are 7 lists, plus a Bonus list, of sight words. At their own pace, please help them practice recalling these words to help with reading skills. Once they have read all the words, we will begin a spelling challenge. You may help them study them any way they like: practice writing the words, flashcards, doing a word search crossword puzzle, finding the words hidden around in the house. Please see the table provided to communicate with us when your child is ready for taking our challenge. When your child is ready to be tested at school on the list, please check the “ready to test” column. Once they get 100% of the words read (or spelled) correctly, they will move on to the next list. If they miss a word, do not worry! We will write that word or words down for them to practice at home in the second column. There will be a chance to retest them and when they are ready for those missed words, please check and date the “Please Retest” column. As your child progresses, they will move up on our Sight Word Ladder poster and they will rewarded with a certificate for all their hard work. Thank you for your support at home!
