SIGLV celebrates the month by holding our annual Sweet Fantasy fundraising event. This year it was spectacular.

Par 4's Silverstone Golf Club created a fantastic atmosphere for a decadent afternoon of libations and desserts. Jin Ju Chocolates provided individual boxes of gourmet chocolate for each attendee and we all sampled Vegan-Bites' various donated healthier goodies. Huge thanks to these sponsors and all other event donors. Without you, the event would not be possible.

Sweet Fantasy is just one example of how SIGLV and our community improve the lives of local women and girls. The money raised will fund, among other projects, anti-human trafficking programs and scholarships.

While Sweet Fantasy will not be held again until next year, we can continue the spirit of giving while having a wonderful time. We Soroptimists know that we add "fun" into everything we do. In fact, SIGLV has several social gatherings annually. It is important that we celebrate our accomplishments. Our monthly program meetings provide education for SIGLV members and guests. It is also important for members to keep informed so that we may better serve our community's needs. Check out soroptimistgreaterlasvegas.org for our events calendar and keep on "Making It Happen!"

Two Very Special Women

Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas Live Your Dream Award winner,

Shantel XXXXXX Shantel is a unique young woman whom we can proudly say is one of ours. She is currently attending UNLV in the school of Social Work. Her career goals are unique and centered on youth in foster care. She feels this sometimes neglected population needs someone to fight for them and advocate for their future. Shantel obtained her AA from a Junior College and she is proud of the fact that she is the first one from her family to graduate, She was accepted into UNLV with a 3.0 GPA. She cites her grandmother as the main influence in her growing up years but her grandmother’s illness forced her into foster care which is the reason for her passion for helping these children. Her six year old daughter is the pride of her life. She has more to tell and we want to hear it at the Awards celebration. We’ll close with a nice quote from her application, “ Most people who come from broken homes and homelessness give up and never take back their dreams. I did.”

Amy Ayoub is our Ruby Award recipient. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who have worked to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional and/or volunteer work. Amy is one of those women. A successful business owner, seasoned consultant and sought-after public speaker, she is a lifelong Las Vegans who combined her passion for public speaking and helping others when she founded The Zen Speaker. As a member of the Las Vegas Community, Amy has been active in the fight to better the lives of all Nevadans through her political and community participation for over three decades. In February 2013, she testified before the Nevada State Assembly and Senate Judiciary Committees, using her personal survivor story in support of Assembly Bill 67, which increased penalties for those convicted of sex trafficking. Today Amy serves as a Commissioner on the Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities, as appointed by Senate Majority Leader

Harry Reid (D-NV), providing a voice for our nation’s youngest citizens. Additionally she sits on the Board of Directors for The Mob Museum, and acts as an

Ambassador for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Amy is a featured speaker in the October 2014 television series of MAKERS: Women in Nevada History, a partnership program by Vegas PBS and UNLV’s Women’s Research Institute of Nevada. Amy was appointed by Governor Kenny Guinn as the first female to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (known as the Boxing Commission) in 1999; recognized by the National Conference for Community and Justice with the Community Hero award (2000); named one of the women responsible for shaping the city during its first 100 years of growth by the Las Vegas Centennial

Committee; and, acknowledged In Business Las Vegas as one of the Most Influential Businesswomen of 2003. In 2012, Amy was honored as one of the “Women of Distinction” in her field by the Southern Nevada chapter of National Association of Women Business Owners.
