A shout, the act of shouting
Matt was bellowing loudly and waving his arms as he plunged into the cold, dark water to escape the wild bees.
Defiance to resist doing something or acting in a
certain manner – bold to authority
Attean’s anger shown on his face which was an act of open defiance against his grandfather for wanting him to learn the white men’s words.
Contemptuous total lack of respect- begin mean
The naughty dog has a contemptuous look on his face when I took his dog bone away.
Detested Not liking - to dislike with strong feelings
Attean detested his reading lessons with Matt.
Dumbfounded To strike dumb with amazement
He was dumbfounded when he noticed his plate of strawberries were missing and his dog sat next to him smiling.
Grudge to do something without wanting to
Attean stared straight ahead of him in silence. Then to Matt’s astonishment, he grudgingly laid a grubby finger on the letter A.

To toss about violently
Matt and Attean were thrashing through the forest as a bear was running after them.

The rabbit was caught in the crudely homemade snare.

Matt’s resentment against Attean vanished as he got to know him better.

Matt seriously pondered whether he should stop reading Robinson Crusoe.

Matt swung his furry catch over his shoulder nonchalantly just like Attean. He was very proud of his accomplishment.
Finicky Fussy
Beethoven is a finicky eater and would not touch his bowl of mash potatoes and green beans.
