Signs We use signs to tell people rules.
We also use signs to give people information.

This is a ‘No Smoking’ sign.
Signs We usually use can, can’t, must
and mustn’t when talking about signs.
It means ‘You mustn’t smoke here.’
What signs can you see?

I can see a ‘No smoking’ sign.
It means ‘You mustn’t smoke here.’
I can see an ‘Open’ sign.
It means ‘The shop is open. You can buy things here.’

I can see a ‘Closed’ sign.
It means ‘The shop is closed. You can’t buy things here.’
I can see a ‘Wet floor’ sign.
It means ‘The floor is wet. You must walk carefully.’
I can see a ‘Sale’ sign.
It means ‘You can buy things at a lower price here.’
I can see a ‘Welcome’ sign.
It means ‘You can go into the shop.’
I can see an ’MTR’ sign.
It means ‘There is an MTR station. You can take the MTR here.’
Where are the signs?
The ‘No entry’ sign is on the door.
The ‘MTR’ sign is above the MTR station.
The ‘Taxi’ sign is beside the road.
The ‘No smoking’ sign is at the restaurant.
The ‘School’ sign is beside the road.
The ‘Restaurant’ sign is above the restaurant.
The ‘No parking’ sign is beside the road.
The ‘No eating and drinking’ sign is at the clothes shop.
The ‘Open’ sign is on the door.
Where can you see these signs? What do they mean?
We can see a ‘No eating and drinking’ sign on the MTR / on a train / at a shop. It means ‘You mustn’t eat or drink here.’
We can see a ‘Wet floor’ sign at a toilet.It means ‘The floor is wet. You must walk carefully.’
We can see a ‘Sale’ sign at a shop / on a door.
It means ‘You can buy things at a lower price here.’
We can see an ‘Exit’ sign on / above / beside a door.
It means ‘You can go out here.’
We can see a ‘Taxi’ sign beside the road.It means ‘You can take a taxi here.’
We can see a ‘School’ sign beside the road.It means ‘There is a school nearby. Drivers must drive carefully.’
It means ‘You mustn’t go in here.’
We can see a ‘No entry’ sign on / above / beside a door.
It means ‘You can get in here.’
ENTRANCE

It means ‘You must turn off the lights when you leave.’
We can see a ‘Save energy’ sign on the wall.
It means ‘You can’t feed the animals.’
We can see a ‘No feeding’ sign in the park.
