SIKASIKA WINS WINS CONSTRUCTION WORLD CONSTRUCTION WORLD BEST PROJECTS!BEST PROJECTS!
Sika took top prize in the prestigious CONSTRUCTION WORLD BEST PROJECTS COMPETITION 2012 under the Specialist contractors or Suppliers category. The winning entry was for the massive 4 Dorp Street, Cape Town project. This project was managed by Sika’s Anthony Webster. Here is a summarized version of the winning entry.Sika solutions for renovation of 4 Dorp Street, Cape Town
In 2010 Group 5 was awarded a contract by the City of Cape Town to renovate 4 Dorp Street, a Western Cape Government, multi-storey building situated in
the heart of the city. BVI Consulting Engineers was contracted to manage all civil engineering aspects of the project. The primary objective of the renovation
was to repair the failing façade which had been crumbling over a number of years and was becoming a threat to pedestrian and vehicular safety. Jakupa
Architects stated that the solution had to be simple, low maintenance, sustainable, and hold as lengthy a guarantee as possible to ensure longevity of the
building. It was decided to strip the building and treat the façade with cementitious waterproofi ng. Jakupa Architects and CS Studio Architects specifi ed
no less than 18 of Sika’s advanced technology products for the renovations, which included concrete repairs, joint sealing, waterproofi ng and protective
coating.
Construction technology innovation One of the initial challenges of this project was encountered during surface preparations, when water jet pressure, which was originally quoted, was found
to be insuffi cient to create adequate open-pore surfaces for maximum adhesion. Once the building had been stripped and suitably prepared, two applica-
tions (1mm thick) of SikaTop Seal-107 ZA were applied over the entire building, covering a complete surface area of 28 400 m². SikaTop Seal-107 ZA was
also used over concrete repairs on the building as a curing compound.
The window renovations called for the supply of Sikafl ex-11FC and Sikafl ex AT-Façade. Preparation of the windows necessitated the use of
Sika Cleaner-205 and Sika Primer-3N. Concrete renovations to the building were carried out using Sika MonoTop-610, Sika MonoTop-615HB,
Sika MonoTop-612 and Sika Rep LW. Sika Cemfl ex, Sika Latex, SikaTop-Armatec 110 EpoCem and other produects were also used.
Environmental impact consideration Three examples of sustainable Sika products used are Sikafl ex 11FC, SikaTop Seal-107 ZA, Sikafl ex AT Façade, however many of the other products used
also exhibit such sustainable characteristics and have thus also contributed to the environmental impact consideration of the project.
Health and SafetyFor protection of the glass as well as worker safety, all windows were insulated with reusable timber boards. There were no health and safety issues
caused by working with Sika products on site and no harm was caused carrying out applications of Sika products. Sika sponsored two site braais for work-
ers to celebrate the non-occurrence of any safety issues.

It’s hard to believe that I am writing this for the fi nal Sika Beat of 2012, and once again it sounds like déjà vu. It’s been a tough year and we are still uncertain of what the New Year will bring us. This has been the case since our World Cup in 2010. Our rand lost some 28% to the US dollar in 2012 and one of the largest listed civil construction companies in SA has had a 50% decline in profi tability in this fi nancial year. In saying that, we as Sika SA will show an 8% sales growth on 2011 and, in a declining market, this shows only one thing, and that is that we are gaining more market share. This was and still remains a major focus for us in 2013. We still remain very positive for the future of our coun-
try and obviously the industry as well, and due to this have invested in our new property in Gauteng. After a year of searching for the right property, the deal was offi cially signed at the beginning of November. This will enable us to produce powders and liquids closer to our big-gest markets, as well as providing support for all of the “border coun-tries” surrounding SA. We are also moving our Port Elizabeth and Cape Town branches to bigger and more effi cient premises to ensure that when the promised R850 Bill infrastructure spend from government is released, Sika is ready to support our customers effectively. Our East African operation in Nairobi is now fully functional with powder and liquid plants commissioned and producing for the local needs of all the East African countries.In closing, I would like thank all of you as loyal staff for the commit-ted effort that you have put in to Sika in 2012, and specifi cally to your families for the support they have given you to allow this effort. Sika Cares
Forderville Primary SchoolGiving back to the community is something that Sika takes great pride in
doing. This year Mervyn Naidoo, Regional Manager of the KZN branch de-
cided that he would target a needy school in Estcourt. Forderville Primary
is a government school situated in Estcourt-KZN with 840 learners, many
from previously disadvantaged communities. After much fundraising, the
school built a school hall which is used by the school, the Department of
Education, community groups and private individuals.
Mervyn met with the principal of Forderville Primary, Anil Sookraj to fi nd out
how Sika could assist and was gratefully shown the school hall and asked
if we could repair their fl oor. The existing school hall fl oor was in very bad
shape; painted over concrete that had started cracking and crumbling in
places. Sika recommended they use Sikafl oor-261, platinum grey for the
360m² surface. Mervyn contacted Vijay Rabikisson from Westside Training,
specialists in laying epoxy fl oors, who agreed to sponsor the laying of the
new fl oor for Forderville Primary. The damaged concrete was pulled up
and fresh concrete was laid so that it would be easier to lay the new epoxy
fl oor. Westside Training then diamond grinded the fl oor, primed the fl oor
area and then applied a 3mm self-levelling epoxy, Sikafl oor-261. After
the fi rst layer was coated, the cracks were still showing up, so they used
Sikadur-AP to full the cracks in the fl oor and then they laid the fi nal coat of
epoxy.
The school was so overwhelmed by Sika’s donation and support that they
proposed that Sika use their school as a means of advertising through
signeage. A sign was erected near the road on the outskirts of the school
and on the outside wall of the school hall, stating:
“We appreciate the kindness of SIKA for agreeing to coat our Hall fl oor. We are willing to allow SIKA to advertise their products to the general public using the school premises. This can be done through banners and posters.”
With “We do it for the passion!” as their motto, the Dolphin Devel-
opment Surf Club certainly inspire enthusiasm and support for their
cause. When John Zehmke, Sales Consultant at Sika’s PE branch,
was approached by Riaad Salie of Africoast, a customer of Sika’s,
to assist in sponsoring the Dolphin Development School, he jumped
at the opportunity to get involved. Sika has sponsored the cost of
surf rash vests for 20 of the students, which will ensure they are
equipped safely and profi ciently for their new sport.
The Dolphin Development School enables underprivileged children
to gain exposure to the wonderful yet competitive atmosphere of
the surfi ng fraternity and the joys of being in and around the ocean.
The school hopes to give these children a sense of purpose, pride
and direction and it has instilled aspirations to excel at the sport by
entering the best achievers into Grommet Development trials, an
event hosted by Surfi ng South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

The second Blitz of 2012 was held during October when Sika sales
teams in KZN, Gauteng and Cape Town hit their regions with incredible
bulk promotions for a limited period of two weeks. This latest Blitz was a
resounding success with KZN confi rming it was their best Blitz ever,
having achieved more than 100% of their budget! Sika Blitzes reach
new customers, encourage customer loyalty and increase the Sika
footprint in focussed and outerlying areas.

In 2008 all Glasfi t’s fl agship stores throughout South Africa were installed with a Sika
branding campaign. However, now it’s time for a revamp! The new look and feel Sika
branding is simpler, better and more outstanding than before. This simple, unfussy
campaign will be showcased in every region, bringing the Sika brand to the attention
of the consumer. Sika’s automotive line services fi tment centres around the country,
and with Glasfi t being one of the major players in the industry, we were proud to
make our mark alongside theirs. So far the project has marked one store in Cape
Town, two in Durban, two in Port Elizabeth and two in Gauteng. Sika is synonymous
with quality and therefore we are proud to project our name loudly for all to see.
Throughout the year, Sika attends many of the tradeshows the various hardware stores host. Sika takes pride in ensuring that our brand stands out strongly
at each of these trade days; with our bright yellow and red colour scheme on all packaging and point of sale, and our staff wearing loud yellow dungarees,
no delegates could miss our brand. Sika took the opportunity at Mica Market and Jack’s tradeshow to showcase their fresh new stand concept which allows
Sika to display all the product ranges on offer to their stores. Mica Market was held between 7th and 10th October 2012 at the exquisite Champagnes Sports
Resort in the Drakensberg, and Jack’s was held at the Wild Coast Sun from 7th to 9th November 2012.

The Philani Valley branch of Mega Build It, based in Umlazi, KZN celebrated
its 4th birthday in April and welcomed Sika’s contribution to these awesome
festivities. As Sika has recently renewed its distribution to the Mega Build
It store, Sika’s KZN Technical Sales rep, Debbie Westwood, took this oppor-
tunity to showcase Sika’s unique products and systems. She demonstrated
the Sika RainTite Kit and Sika MaxTack, inviting customers to sample the
quick and easy techniques for themselves. Sika product brochures were
handed out and a very happy customer won a Sika product hamper.
Debbie says after attending this birthday bash, ‘festive’ has a whole new
meaning! The music was loud, taxis and cars were washed free of charge,
giveaways from all the suppliers were up for grabs, and children from the
village joined in the festivities, lapping up the sweets, ice cream and bright
yellow Sika balloons that were given out, and having a ball on the jumping
castle.
Mega Build It’s Store Manager, Wesley Littleton, poured loads of enthusi-
asm and energy into the occasion. It was a celebration to remember and
a great way to educate the surrounding community about the store and
Sika’s products.

Sika has taken extra precautions to ensure that all safety measures
are covered when using Sika’s concrete admixture products on site.
Jason Callister, Key Account Manager of Concrete, met with Jaco
Bezuidenhout, Plant Area Manager of the South Coast, for NPC-
Cimpor to discuss implementing safety signs on two of their South
Coast plants, namely Park Rynie and Margate. This will ensure that
in the case of an accident or spillage of admixtures on site, that
workers will be aware that they need to read the signage and follow
the safety procedures exactly. The signs have been placed adjacent
to the tanks that store
concrete admixtures so
they are easily visible
should an accident

To celebrate the arrival of Spring, Glasfi t’s Head Offi ce in Gauteng
arranged a Spring Day function on Friday 14th of September. Delegates
from Sika attended and a great time was had by all. Mother Nature
decided to be her unpredictable self and send a Spring Day gift in the
form of a glorious Highveld thunderstorm! This however did not dampen
the high spirits of the day, as events such as these are instrumental in
further developing the great relationship between two companies, which,
over time, have become like one big happy family!
Sika was in attendance once again for the KZN Concrete Society Annual
Golf day, held at Beachwood Golf Course in Durban on 27th September
2012. Unfortunately the doyen of KZN CSSA, Garth Gamble, was unable to
attend but we could all imagine him cheering the players on as they moved
through the course.
Sika’s iconic gazebo was erected for all to see, some may have even heard
us before they saw us, but that is no surprise! All players were greeted
with a friendly face and offered a wide selection of energy induced refresh-
ments before progressing to the next tee.
The tournament was followed by prize giving and, as seeing that Sika had
entered four 4-balls, we were bound to fi nish in fi rst place. We are proud
to announce that Sika’s Ian Ivins and Jason Callister were in the winning
team, managing to beat the ‘big bosses’ Paul Adams and Gerhard Smit.
Another successful day on behalf of the Concrete Society.

Sika Sponsors 3rd ICCRRR
The CSSA (Concrete Society of Southern Africa) hosted a conference addressing the question of “Cracks in Concrete” in Gauteng, Cape Town, Port Eliza-
beth and Durban between 1st and 4th October.
The premise of the conference was: “Cracks in Concrete are a fact of life, but when are they acceptable and when are they not?” This conference
presented a unique opportunity to learn the whole concrete cracking story, covering the basic types, the causes, preventative measures, diagnostics and
remedies. Well-known industry experts presented the latest thinking on this topical issue and delegates were treated to a very informative and thought-
provoking seminar.
Sika’s high profi le presence was seen at each regional event. Sika hosted stands in each region showcasing concrete products. Sika also sponsored the
delegates’ name tags. Sika’s Technical Manager, Wayne Smithers, gave a presentation on “Injection Systems for Concrete Structures”, covering various
causes and remedies of concrete cracking as well as various technologies in the industry. This very informative event shed important light on issues that
many contractors are facing, and created the perfect forum for discussion on solutions, shared amongst industry professionals.
Sika was one of the main sponsors of the third International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofi tting (ICCRRR) held at UCT from 3rd to
5th September 2012. Held every four years, the 2012 conference was dedicated to the person and the work of Professor Joost Walraven, who throughout
his career has made outstanding contributions to concrete research and technology. A total of 240 papers were accepted for presentation at ICCRRR,
representing authors from 52 countries and fi ve continents.
Sika’s bold corporate identity was a force to be reckoned with at the event; arriving in their bright red jackets our Sales and Marketing teams stood apart
from the other delegates, and everywhere you looked Sika branding was there, even the drinks served during lunch timewere red and yellow! Sika also
sponsored the main gala event which hosted over 400 delegates and sponsors. UCT’s Music Centre showcased its talented students who performed an
amazing Opera set against a beautiful backdrop (compliments of Sika) and, along with outstanding food, the evening was a resounding success.

With so many trade events throughout the year, Sika is kept very busy
showcasing our innovative technologies, vast technical expertise as well as
promoting our tried and trusted brand. October seems to be ‘Trade Show
Season’ where all societies, committees and academic circles plan their
industry events.
It is always important for companies within the industry to keep their
brands current and services readily available, and trade events provide
the perfect opportunity to demonstrate their competitive edge. Targeting
several different markets enables Sika to truly interact with the decision
makers in the construction industry. Sika, along with our competitors and
complementary suppliers, aims to capture the attention of the engineers,
architects, consultants and specifi ers attending these events, so that they
become familiar with our product offering, whether they are specifying our
products or carrying out the application.
Between 14 October and 6 November Sika attended three more trade
events, including; SAFCEC (South African Federation of Civil Engineering
Contractors) 14-16 October in Cape Town - with just 10 exhibitors, this
event allowed for a more personal interaction between all leaders in the
construction Industry. IMESA (Institute of Municipal Engineering) 24-26
October in George, and lastly CESA 4-6 November in Durban.

When NPC-CIMPOR KZN staff showed a keen interest in further training
to increase their knowledge on Sika products, Jason Callister, Key Ac-
count Manager of Concrete, arranged a training day solely for the NPC-
Cimpor staff, with the help of the concrete team at Sika. NPC-CIMPOR
is a manufacturer and distributor of CEMENT, CONCRETE AND AGGRE-
GATE products to the hardware retail, Ready-mix, Concrete product, and
construction industries. The training took place on 10th October 2012
at the Durban Ski Boat Club conference room. Craig Handler, Concrete
Services Manager, covered the full basket of products offered by Sika,
focusing mainly on concrete admixtures. Andre Erasmus, Tunnelling
and Mining manager, covered Sika fi bres and the benefi ts they achieve
in comparison to reinforced steel in concrete. Lastly, Andre Barnard,
Concrete Business Unit Manager, gave a brief overview of Sika’s history,
focusing on concrete repair systems along with other supporting Sika
products that could be used for such applications. Following the train-
ing, Sika hosted a braai for all the NPC staff to relax and enjoy chilling
out together.
Sika “KNOWS” the Cape Town International Boat ShowThe Cape Town International Boat Show took place from 12th to14th October at the Cape Town ICC and the V&A Waterfront. Sika is becoming increas-
ingly recognised in the marine industry, so it’s no wonder our stand attracts more attention with every passing year. Following the introduction of
Sika’s ‘Boat Nose’, the ‘Sika Knows’ exhibit, our stand now appeals to both boat builders and boat owners who use Sika products. As the Boat Nose
was built using authentic products and fi xtures, sales staff are able to indicate to curious visitors precisely which products can be used in which areas.
With a full staff of sevenon the stand, we were given the opportunity to rotate shifts so that each person could have a turn to head out onto the canal,
taking us to the V&A waterfront where all the top luxury boat manufacturers showcased their pride and joy.
This annual event showcases some fantastic features including the biggest Boat Display Afl oat, the biggest Indoor Wakeboard contest in Africa, a
Fishing Village for avid anglers and, for the fi rst time this year, the show hosted a lecture series for visitors interested in various aspects of boat build-
ing and boat safety.

In the past year Sika has played an important role in the repair and
refurbishment of Cape Town’s famous Civic Centre. Built in 1978,
this well-known landmark in the city centre comprises two blocks;
the low-rise Podium Block, and the 98m, 26 storey, Tower Block.
Anthony Webster of Sika Cape Town was onsite to ensure Sika’s
role was executed smoothly.
Although concrete repairs and rehabilitation were carried out seven
years ago, waterproofi ng and coating were delayed due to lack of
funds. By the time Phase 2 commenced, concrete repairs, joint
sealing and cover enhancing were also necessary. This portion of
the project was awarded to GVK Siya Zama Contractors.
Sika MonoTop-612 and SikaMonoTop-615 HB were specifi ed for
those areas displaying deteriorated concrete; as both products
contain silica fume, and are ideally suited for overhead and vertical
surfaces. Sika Rep LW was also used here. SikaTop-Armatec-110
EpoCem was applied as a bonding medium for the repair mortars
to the old concrete. SikaGrout-212 was also specifi ed. Failed joints
were replaced with Sikafl ex AT-Façade and Sikafl ex-11 FC+ was
used for further joint sealing. The main expansion joints in the
buildings were sealed with Sika’s innovative Sikadur-Combifl ex SG
bandage system and Sikadur-31 CF Normal.
The Phase 2 waterproofi ng contract was awarded to Haefele
Waterproofi ng, who specifi ed several Sika products. Sika BlackSeal
T-140 PG (0oC) was applied to the 4,000m2 rooftop area as an
intermediate layer and followed by a layer of Sika BlackSeal T-140
SG (0oC). The second layer (SG) provides a sand broadcast surface.
The rooftop area was then completed with a protective layer of UV
resistant Sika BlackSeal-Silvercoat. As a loose-lay protective layer
for Bituthene 3000, Sika BlackSeal T-130 PG was applied to the
10 000m2 area of the Podium block. Parapets and upstand termi-
nations were waterproofed with Sikalastic-150. SikaTop Seal-107
ZA was used for further waterproofi ng and damp-proofi ng. Coating
of the main structure of the Civic Centre was carried out by Marmo-
ran using customized natural protection wall coating systems.
This signifi cant project, involving the application of over a dozen
of Sika’s high performance products, has been in progress for the
past twelve months, and is scheduled for completion towards the
end of 2012, whereupon the City of Cape Town will undoubtedly
feel proud of its famous, refurbished Civic Centre.
Sika’s Innovative Solutions
Sika recently played an important role in the restoration of the once impos-
ing Pearson Conservatory situated in St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth.
Originally built in 1882 for the cultivation of exotic plants, water lilies
and orchids, the conservatory was almost demolished in the 1970’s, but
fortunately declared a national monument in 1983. In 2010 the Nelson
Mandela Municipality approved a substantial upgrade and refurbishment
to the dilapidated conservatory and Sika’s Jean le Roux handled Sika’s
product supply to the project.
Matrix Architects awarded the main contract to Pro Khaya Construction
who was tasked with installing fl ooring, building fl ower boxes and repairing
internal and external walling at the conservatory. Sika MonoTop-620 (50 x
25kgs) was the contractor’s instant product choice for all concrete repairs.
After almost 130 years, all the old ironwork, as well as over 98% of the
original woodwork and a considerable portion of the original glass was still
in existence. However, for the restoration project, the rusted iron and rotting
wood required replacement with a new steel structure, and in accordance
with modern building codes, all glass panels had to be replaced with 6mm
safety glass.
AMFI Craft, specialist fi breglass designers and manufacturers, supplied
hundreds of metres of fi breglass architraves for the project. Prior to bond-
ing the architraves to the epoxy painted steel structure, both substrates
were pre-treated with Sika Cleaner-205. Sikafl ex-552 AT was then applied
to bond the fi breglass architraves to the steel. Sika Cleaner-205 came
to the fore once again to pre-treat all newly installed glass panels and
windows as well as the surrounding steel, prior to bonding with Sika’s
weatherproofi ng sealant, Sikasil WS-305 CN.
In 1882, the total cost to construct Pearson Conservatory, whose parts
were shipped out from England in kit form, was £3800. In 2011, the entire
project cost R5.5million, an amount well spent on restoring this stately
national monument to her former Victorian splendour.
Due largely to the high performance and ease of application of Sika’s
internationally approved products, this rare undertaking was completed
in six months. Pearson Conservatory is once again standing proudly in St
George’s Park and recently scooped an Award of Merit from the Eastern
Cape Institute of Architects.

Sika Strengthens Psychiatric Ward at Addington Hospital
Situated on Meyersdal Eco Estate in Alberton, south east of Johannesburg is a newly constructed “green” mansion called Hough House. Valued at approxi-
mately R20million, this magnifi cent home was designed by Recreate Architects for Andrew Hough of the Hough Group, one of the country’s key suppliers
of polycarbonate roof sheeting. IJ van der Walt Consulting Engineers in conjunction with Conrad Hough had no hesitation in specifying Sika’s world-class
products to complete this special residence, which has been built to the highest standards seen in the construction industry today.
As is always the case, Sika ensured that contract workers were adequately trained on the full use of its specifi ed products. One such product was Cemfl ex,
an acrylic based emulsion, which forms effective waterproofi ng slurry when mixed with Portland cement. The entire interior and exterior was coated with
this Cemfl ex plaster mix. Connection joints around all windows and doors were sealed with Sikafl ex PRO-2 HP.
The SikaRoof MTC System of products was used to waterproof the garage and roof. Primers used were Sika Concrete Primer and Sikalastic Metal Primer.
The 720m2 roof of the main house was waterproofed using Sikalastic-601 BC base coat, followed by Sikalastic-621 TC, a UV stable topcoat. The 250m2
garage roof was waterproofed using Sikalastic-602 BR base coat, followed by Sikalastic-622 TR as the topcoat. This area was then converted into a study
overlooking a roof garden and Koi pond. Both Sika products used are highly root resistant, so ideally suited for this application. Another feature of the
home is a fi ve metre high vertical garden, or living wall, standing proudly at the entrance, which was also waterproofed with the SikaRoof MTC System.
A special feature inside Hough House is an 80m2 home theatre, which was sealed by adding Sikalite, a powdered waterproofi ng admixture, to the plaster. A
200,000 litre reservoir situated next to the garage was waterproofed using SikaTop Seal-107 ZA.
Hough House, standing majestically on this eco estate, surrounded by roaming wildlife, is almost 100% green, and once completed, will use solar power
as well as solar heating (and a battery room). Rain water falling onto the garage roof garden, will be channeled into the reservoir for use in the garden and
home, while some will be fi ltered for use as drinking water.
Sika is honoured to have played such an integral part in this environmentally friendly project and the Hough Group can rest assured that Hough House,
having been constructed and coated to the highest possible levels using Sika’s renowned products, will stand proud for decades to come.
After fi re damaged the psychiatric ward at Addington Hospital in Durban, one of Sika’s internationally distinguished products came to the rescue. Uncertain
whether heat may have compromised the concrete roof slab covering the ward corridors, TGC Engineers decided that as a precautionary measure, Sika’s
CarboDur Plates would be the ideal solution for the repair project. Warren McDaniel was Sika’s technical advisor to the project.
Sika CarboDur Plates are specifi cally designed for strengthening of concrete as well as timber and masonry structures. These plates are bonded onto the
structure as an external reinforcement using Sikadur-30 epoxy adhesive. The Sika CarboDur system is used for strengthening where structural elements
have been damaged such as the Addington Hospital fi re damage.
Additional Sika products specifi ed were Sikadur-30 and Sikadur-31 CF Normal. Both were used to bond the Sika CarboDur Plates (S512 x 120m) onto the
concrete roof slab. Prior to bonding, Sikadur-31 CF Normal was used as a re-profi ling agent to fi ll in any surface imperfections. Once cured, the CarboDur
Plates were cleaned with Colma Cleaner and then bonded to fi fty of the corridor beams, each strip measuring 2.4 metres.
Although time was a factor of this project and surface preparation was vital, the specialist contractor, Amfra Maintenance Services, completed the work
timeously, helped considerably by the ease of application of Sika’s superior products.
Addington Hospital can be confi dent in the knowledge that its staff and patients in the psychiatric ward have been more than adequately protected by Sika
product that is used worldwide to repair earthquake damage.

Busmark 2000 specifi es SIKA for 190 buses
Métier strengthens bond with Sika
Several Sika products have been specifi ed for use in the assemblage of
190 nine-metre long buses. The buses are suppliedby Busmark 2000 for
the MyCiTi Bus Services, Cape Town’s public transport system. Already
up and running using large buses, the system will soon implement these
smaller buses on minor roads.
According to Malcolm Wilken, General Manager of Busmark Western Cape,
“The fi rst 30 buses were produced by the end of June 2012. The plan is
to make 20 more each month thereafter until the full contract for 190 is
completed.”
The following quantities of products are being supplied: Sikafl ex 256 (5800
x 600ml); Sikafl ex 552AT (1000 x 600ml); Sikafl ex 295UV Black (800 x
600ml); Sika Cleaner 20 (5600); Sika Remover 208 (350); Sika Primer
206G+P (200); Sika Activator (130). The product is applied manually and
with air applicators for bonding all glass windows, bonding all side panel,
roof, front and back panels, fl ooring and inner panels.
These Optare Solos (bus design name), are assembled from kits imported
from Leeds in the UK. Sika was chosen as Sika products were specifi ed by
the bus designers and because Sika is able to offer on hand training and
back up.Busmark is based in Randfontein and the Elsies River (West-
ern Cape) factory was established when they were awarded the MyCiTi
contract.
Métier is one of Sika’s key customers, supplying them concrete admixtures since they were fi rst established in 2007. The company has grown substantially
in the past six years, now with several plants in KZN, and has recently expanded into the Gauteng region. Sika welcomes these new developments and is
ready for the challenge of supplying product to exciting new projects that are in the pipeline.
Corporate social investmentAt least 80 local, untrained, previously disadvantaged labour force
staff was trained by Sika in concrete repair. Sika’s Cape Town Area
Sales Manager, Anthony Webster, held nine training sessions, which
were updated on a monthly basis. Sika presented 80 certifi cates of
concrete repair and application, joint sealing training, protective coat-
ings and the use of Sika systems to the labour force.
Motivating facts about the projectUpon completion of the facelift/renovations to 4 Dorp Street, the City
of Cape Town can feel justly proud of one of its city centre buildings
and will be secure in the knowledge that 18 of Sika’s internationally
recognised and approved products have featured in every facet of the
renovations. More than 2,000 concrete and other structural repairs
were completed on this project. Every one of these repairs utilized
Sika products. No other product or systems supplier was used on this
project, all construction product used was Sika.
The total volumes of Sika products used on the 4 Dorp Street project
to date are:

Niall Wylde, former MD of Sika SA, returned to Sika South Africa from Sika Dubai in May this year and has taken up the position of Business Develop-
ment Manager. Niall is based at the Port Elizabeth branch and his goal is to develop Sika’s business in all African “Border Countries”, namely; Namibia,
Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland. These countries are all part of the Southern African Development
Corporation (SADC ) and form a very large potential market for Sika South Africa. All stock, logistics, manpower and technical support for projects in
these regions will come from Sika South Africa. Sika SA is very glad to have Niall back on our team, taking on new challenges and expanding our ever
growing markets in South Africa and surrounds.

obtained a T3 qualifi cation in mechanical engineering at Vaal Technikon in Vanderbijlpark. He fi rst worked at Sika back in 1988,then left to join an op-
position company managing their inland operation for 10 years. During this time he obtained his Marketing Management Diploma.He is an “all” sports
fanatic, but just follows it on TV! Leon is married to Zerina and has two daughters and one grandson.

years for a company in the construction industry. Her hobbies are having fun and spending time with her boys.

Denise has been appointed to Sika Head Offi ce as Product Administrator. She is 25 years old and lives in Merebank. Havingmany interests, those
closest to her heart are music, reading and the outdoors. Denise is currently studying part time, and would like to complete her degree. Her previous
job was at a Wire Harness Manufacturing company in Prospecton, where she worked as a Production Control/Logistics clerk. Denise wants to thank
everyone at Sika for being so welcoming and friendly thus far, and looks forward to the rest of her career here.

Jan Ellis from Sika Cape Town has a competitive nature, taking part in
triathlons and keeping fi t with cycling and other pursuits. He recently entered the
inaugural Tri-Robben Island where participants had to endure three gruelling disci-
plines: an 800m swim, a 28km mountain bike race, and a further 8km run. First held
on 9 September 2012, the idea behind the introduction
of this event was to increase the knowledge of this
historical landmark. After braving frigid waters and
exploring tough terrain far more thoroughly than most,
Jan achieved 27th place overall in a time of two hours
and 42minutes.

Gerhard & Son complete the half AmashovaThe Amashova 105km cycle race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban was held on 14th October 2012. The Half-Amashova
takes place on the same day, starting in Hillcrest and fi nishing at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Gerhard Smit and
his son Liam undertook the challenge of competing in the half Amashova, 40km long cycle race.
This was both Gerhard and Liam’s fi rst “Shova” attempt and both thoroughly enjoyed their time on the road together, “The
main thing is that we completed what we set out to do at 5:30am that morning!” says Gerhard. Both guys were ready for
a relaxing afternoon. Here’s to encouraging more parents and children to join together in events and activities such as this.

The end of the year in sight is always a relief - a time to shake off the stresses and strains of hard work and pat ourelves on the back for producing another
year of good results. Staff at Sika Head Offi ce were invited to an Year End luncheon at the Pool Deck of the Blue Waters Hotel, situated on Durban’s Beachfront.
Amidst all the dreary, rainy weather, we managed to plan the day perfectly as it was fi lled with sunshine, blue skies and warm air, and wonderfully located
at this beach venue.
The stunning décor and beautiful table centre pieces made for an elegant lunch with dishes ranging from sushi to roast lamb - a feast by anyone’s standards!
Heidi Nel once again pulled out all the stops when planning the event and even threw in a few games to entertain the staff, testing their skills and quick think-
ing, even though everyone was doing their best to start slowing down for the holiday season. This must be why Sika SA is still showing growth in sales - there
is never a ‘slow down’ period, even at the party!
Awards were handed out for long service as well as to factory staff members who have, over the past three years, exceeded expectations. Welcome Mpisi,
Production Manager, introduced an award for each section, to honour those who have gone the extra mile in their work. Then it was time for the lucky draws
where a few fortunate staff members won awesome vouchers to spoil themselves and their families over the holiday season.
Fantastic company, wonderful food, beautiful weather and exciting events
made for a most successful year end party.

Biggest Sales Month EVERAs Paul mentioned in his MD address, this year Sika SA had an 8% sales
growth on 2011! Not surprising then that October saw the highest sales
in Sika SA history. This achievement was cause for celebration at Sika
branches throughout the country and all staff were treated to a braai at
their regional offi ces. In these economically hard times, it is up to the
sales team and all supporting departments to do their very best to retain
current customers, build new relationships and ensure all operations run
smoothly. Without a doubt, our sales team are proving to be a force to be
reckoned with and we applaud them for their hard work. However, without
all the other linksin the Sika value chain, this goal would never have been
reached. Congratulations Sika Team!

During the course on November, the Sika Sales team got involved in
the ever popular Movember campaign where companies and indi-
viduals can raise funds for men’s health, specifi cally prostate cancer.
Our guys spent the entire month itching and attempting to grow their
best “Mo” possible to stand a chance to win prizes.
In efforts to get everyone involved, ladies were also allowed to enter
with their most outrageous and creative photo’s.
