THE ESSENCE OF A SOUND ABSORBER IS TO SUBDUE
AND BREAK UP SOUND WAVES TO CREATE PLEASANT
SURROUNDINGS AND ENVIRONMENTS. IT’S THE
FUNCTION AND TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THIS THAT
HAVE BEEN THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE DESIGN
PROCESS, WHERE AESTHETIC VALUES CAN BE SEEN IN
MATHEMATICAL FORMULAS THAT CREATE A BASE ON
WHICH TO BUILD FURTHER.
JOHAN LINDSTÉN
At an early stage humans developed five senses; taste, touch, sound,
smell, and sight. Out of these the latter three are of extra importance for
our survival. We have chosen to focus on sound.
When our ability to hear first evolved it was primarily used to identify
danger, locate its origin and figure out the best route of escape. Nowa-
days we are faced with a completely different challenge. We live in an
information society where the ability to distinguish voices and sounds is
essential to be able to sort and make use of information. In order to not
be distracted by unwanted sounds we have developed noise absorbing
mechanisms, making it more pleasant and easier to concentrate when
spending time in these challenging environments. We want to bring the
conditions of our outside environment into our indoor spaces.
Our goal is to recreate our outdoor environment by pleasing all our sen-
ses; eyes, ears and soul!
Inspired by a simple envelope, with its clean lines, creates
symmetry in a playful way. By mounting Post in various angles
it generates tension, beautiful shadows and patterns.

For us, good design is like a great meal with friends: the ingredi-
ents have to be right, the dish sould be individually prepared, the
spices fine tuned. Someone enthusiastically tells an interesting
story. We laugh a lot, the wine is good, we keep the memory of a
wonderful evening for a long time. At the beginning of the design
development is a brainstorming: simple • easy • like a picture • un-
complicated • variable • concise • formally reduced • self-explana-
tory • independently detailed • innovative.
At the end there is Clamp

CHESTERFIELD J O H A N L I N D S T É N
CHESTERFIELD HAS HIGH ABSORBENCY PROPERTIES THANKS TO ITS INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION. IT MIXES A
VARIETY OF ABSORBENCY DENSITIES: HIGH DENSITY CLOSEST TO THE WALLS AND LOWER DENSITY FURTHER
AWAY FROM THE WALLS. IT CREATES A GOOD BALANCE IN THE IMPORTANT MEDIUM FREQUENCY RANGE IN
WHICH MUCH OF THE SOUND ENERGY IN SPEECH CAN BE FOUND. THIS MAKES CHESTERFIELD A HIGHLY EFFEC-
TIVE, SPACE-EFFICIENT SOLUTION: ITS ABSORBENCY PROPERTIES ARE UP TO 30% GREATER THAN THOSE OF A
STANDARD SOFT PANEL THAT WOULD HAVE OCCUPIED THE SAME SPACE.”
PIERRE CHIGOT / DESIGN DEVELOPER, ECOPHON
Like its name, the inspiration comes from the iconic, traditional
Chesterfield sofa and its timeless design that has become synony-
mous with deep quilting. The height differences of the sinusoidal
curves give the sound absorbers their characteristic design at the
same time as reinforcing their acoustic and absorbent properties.

Loop is made up of four identical arcs/radii which together create
a geometric basis for expansion. You can adapt the look of the
exterior depending on how Loop is positioned and with an offset
you can create a playful, billowing design along the wall.

The aim and intention of Romb is to create an intricate, graphic
silhouette with a blend of rhombuses, triangles and hexagons
which, when combined as a whole, create a visually attractive
pattern. Various parallel characters can be seen in the structure,
depending on how it is viewed.

Illusion, with its beautifully balanced design, is an efficient sound
absorber thanks to the way it is constructed. The pleats create a
larger exposed surface, while the cavity behind provides the
absorber with the airspace it needs to work efficiently in the medi-
um frequency range.

MAG B Ö T T C H E R & K A Y S E R
Versatile, flexible and playfully useful. The new acoustic panel system Mag designed
by the German design duo Böttcher-Kayser has a modern design idea with great
flexibility and can be used with great variety. In addition to its sound absorption,
Mag can be used as a space separator if you want to create a more private area.
Thanks to the magnetic edges of the panels, you can quickly and easily vary the
composition of the panels, disassemble them or connect them without the need
for tools. Through the wide range of fabrics, it is easy to create new environments,
rooms within the room and change the expression.

FOREST B Ö T T C H E R & K A Y S E R
Forest, with its abstract silhouette of trees, creates the same calm feeling indoors
as the calm of the forest. Just like in the natural forest, which sometimes is dense
and sometimes sparse, you can build similar structures with Forest. The good sound
absorption capability and the organic forms create a calm atmosphere in office and
work environments.

HIGH LOW
Sound consists of energy. The difference between sound and, for instance, light is that
sound needs particles to move through. Sound needs a medium, usually air, to be able to
transport itself from point A to point B. Sound also needs something to initiate vibrations,
such as a hammer hitting a nail or a guitar string being played. Furthermore, the ear and
its ability to distinguish sounds is an essential component in the acoustic environment.
The energies that constitute sounds vary depending on the frequency of the sound
waves. A bass will propagate sound waves with more energy and low frequency, which is
why we can experience a pressure in our whole bodies at a concert when there is a loud
bass. This is nothing more than air being pushed towards us. Bass tones will therefore
carry over long distances due to its high level of energy and be experienced as disturbing.
Treble sounds on the other hand have less energy and shorter wavelength and thereby
fade quicker over distance. Imagine a conversation in the office next door. We have a
difficult time hearing what is being said because the treble sound cannot get through the
wall like the bass sound would. If the voice is very low the sound will feel more annoying
as we cannot distinguish the specifics but clearly hear the bass tones.
We all have an internal hearing threshold that is affected by differently. If we are expo-
sed to strong sound pressure (above 120dB) we experience pain as our pain barrier is
breached. We should be aware of the fact that our ears are not as forgiving as our eyes.
When exposed to extremely strong light our eyes close automatically, we may get a blind
spot on our eyes that eventually heals. Our ears on the other hand can be damaged more
seriously. We can develop tinnitus and other types of hearing problems that do not heal
by themselves. We rather endure poor lighting than a poor sound environment.
Our hearing also changes with age. It is quite common that elders get a more narrow
curve. They then have difficulty distingushing between similar words and different
consonants. They instead interpret the situation and read lips. However if we bump up the
sound level they tend to hear what we are saying.

Humans can hear between the frequencies of 20-20 000 Hz. However, our speech lies between 125-8 000 Hz. O, A, E and Y are the vowels that are loudest. These are possible to place in the lower of the spectrum. B, M, R and V are toned consonants, which means they occupy the middle part of the frequency range. The upper part is taken by J, P, F, S and T.
CLASSROOM A huge problem are classrooms, where there in normal cases are only one source of sound
in a specific part of the room (the teacher speaking). Closest are the students on the first row
who receive the direct sound. Those who are seated further back receive, besides the direct
sound, reflections that bounce off the roof and walls.
Solution: This example describes the function visually. When the sound wave from the
teacher hits the panel the energy is absorbed. The energy is absorbed by the material
without reflecting through the rest of the classroom which means that everyone gets the
direct sound rather than a mixture of reflections.
THE ABSORBENTS FUNCTION IN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS
OFFICEIn this untreated room we get an unwanted flow of sound, such as undeciphe-
rable words. The results is that the room feels disturbed and chaotic.
Solution: In the treated room we apply absorbents on either side of the wall
which reduce the flow of sound. We also place absorbents on a non-parallel
surface to make the offices more enjoyable. We thereby increase the ability to
concentrate and sound environment.
THE BEST OF TWO WORLDSSince 2017 Decibel by Johanson cooperate with Saint-Gobain Ecophon AB, who are

SUSTAINABILITY – AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR CONCEPT Decibel by Johanson strävar ständigt efter nya möjligheter och förbättrade egenskaper
med våra produkter. Vi lägger stor vikt på både våra leverantörers och vår egen produk-
tion samt vilka komponenter som ingår och dess miljöpåverkan.
FOCUSING ON THE INSIDEWorking with Ecophon, we have a supplier who takes these issues very seriously and
can account for the environmental impact of the core material. It is worth mentio-
ning that more than 70% of the glass content in the sound-absorbing glass wool is
made up of recycled glass. Collecting items like glass bottles via recycling stations in
Sweden and making them into sound absorbers is unique. Ecophon was the first in
the market to offer its product range made with a plant-based binder thus elimina-
ting the need for 24,000 barrels of crude oil per year. Ecophon’s products also have
a number of third-party certificates for ensuring a healthy indoor environment for
people. The production plant is based in Hyllinge, southern Sweden, and is powered
by electricity from 100% renewable sources.
COVERSThe fabrics used in our various sound absorbers are carefully selected and tested
according to the relevant standards by all our manufacturers.
Decibel’s aim is to ensure that none of the properties contributed by each of the
various components are altered or compromised in any way.
PRODUCT PROPERTIESIn a unique cooperation with Ecophon, world leading in room acoustics we are launching
a completely new concept.
As the only Swedish firm we have entered an agreement where knowledge and compe-
tence has been decisive factors for the result: world class sound absorbing solutions. The
choice of material in both the core and outer layers are therefore of the highest quality.
Environmentally friendly and qualified material that together with carefully considered
design challenges a world of sound.
All our products are carefully tested at well renowned laboratoriums and according to the
standards set in each market.
The production processes for the different components are environmentally certified
according to ISO 14001 and everything is produced at Hyllinge and Markaryd in Sweden.
