SILENT AUCTION & LUNCH S U N D AY, N O V E M B E R 3

The best way to describe our Called to Lead Retreat is by first telling you what this retreat is not. This is not a retreat that will give you the five common principles of leadership or a step by step guide of what effective leaders do. Rather, we will explore how God has equipped each of us to make an impact in the world around us. Throughout Scripture, we will see that God often uses unexpected people to lead and asks them to be nothing other than who God made them to be. Pairing our Scripture readings with some creative (and fun) TED talk videos, we will be-gin to explore how each of us can uniquely lead in our church and our communi-ties by authentically living into who God created us to be. In addition to the content of the retreat, we will have plenty of free time to get to know our church family better while enjoying the recreational options of the park. Recreational options include: golfing, fishing, kayaking and canoeing, playgrounds for kids, basketball courts, and plenty of space to relax while en-joying beautiful scenery. This retreat is for the entire family. Childcare and children’s recreational options are available for kids from preschool through elementary school. Jonathan will lead sessions for our middle and high school students. The cost for the weekend is $175 for a single registration, $225 for a couple regis-tration, and $275 for the whole family. Chalets are available to families or groups of 3 or more people at an additional 10% cost. Scholarships are also available. To reserve your spot, request a scholarship, or if you have any questions, please contact R.G. at [email protected]. You can register for the Called to Lead Retreat under the “Coming Up” tab on our website www.firstchurchbhm.com.

In this retreat, we will:

· Learn how the original context shapes the meaning of Scripture· Read all of the Bible through the lens of Jesus’ life, teaching, death, and resurrection· Learn that we value inclusivity and social justice not in spite of the Bible but because of it· Be challenged to live in such a way that brings life to ourselves, our families, and to the whole world· Live into our identities as God’s children created in love, by love, and for love

The Manna and Mercy Retreat is the theological foundation for our mission statement and

six priorities at First Church. It undergirds everything else we do. During this weekend, we

will journey through the whole Bible– from Genesis to Revelation – using Daniel Erlander’s

book Manna and Mercy as our guide.

This retreat will take place in the Loft at

First Church November 22-24. The re-

treat costs $50 which covers your Manna

and Mercy book, breakfast on Saturday,

and lunch on both Saturday and Sunday.

You can register by emailing R.G. at Rg@

firstchurchbhm.com or on our website

under the “Coming Up” tab.

In her book Daring Greatly, Dr. Brene Brown writes, “vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness.” One of the greatest aspects of authenticity is the willingness to be vulnerable. Unfortunately, the Church has not always been a place where people have felt comfortable letting their guard down. There is often fear of not having it all together, fear that you might be labeled weak or that you might be the only one struggling. But at First Church, we know we all struggle from time to time. We want to be a church that allows space for each of us to be vulnerable because we believe vulnerability begets vulnerability. We believe that we can be a place of support and care. In this series we will discuss the topics of grief, failure, insecurity and loneliness in authentic ways. May we ALL be willing to be brave and courageous on our journey of vulnerability together.

Project 12/25 is a church-wide effort to make sure every child and family at First Church has a Merry Christmas. In October families who worship regularly at First Church answered questions about their needs and wants. If you would like to sponsor one of these families for groceries or gifts you may collect information at the Welcome Center Desk on Sundays in November.

This year, we have the opportunity to expand Project 12/25 in a way that can have a lasting impact on our downtown community. Path-ways shelter for women and children is working to begin the only Early Child Learning Center specifically for children who are experienc-ing homeless. Often, these kids must leave their shelter early in the morning with nothing to do but follow their mothers, whether it is to various appointments or just waiting at a park until the shelter re-opens. By opening this ELC, Pathways will provide children experienc-ing homelessness a safe, enriching, and stable environment during the day. We’ve been invited to purchase items for the various rooms at the new ELC. We hope each of you will either sponsor a child connected to First Church or commit to purchase some of the items needed by the Path-ways ELC. Starting in November, you can either pick up a sponsor packet or select an item from Pathways’ wish list. You can also make a donation that will go towards this effort simply by marking “12/25” on your check or your online giving form.

It is time to build the 2020 Panama Mission Team. The 2020 team will be heading to Panama June 28 through July 5. On the trip we will be working with children, doing construction on homes, building friendships with Ngobe Panamanian In-dians, exploring the rainforest, seeing the beaches, and we will have an opportunity to tour Panama City. The trip will cost between $750 - $850 per person if you help with all fundraisers. This is an inter-generational trip that offers a wonderful spiritual and life experience. However, children and youth under the age of 16 must have a guardian accompany them.

You may complete a mission trip application now, which can be found on our website under “Coming Up.” Please return completed forms and a non-refundable $50 application deposit to Jonathan Goss by February 1, 2020. Check out the Panama page under the Ministries tab at www.firstchurchbhm.com for a video to see what the experience is like and begin getting excited. Please contact Jonathan Goss at [email protected] with any questions or to inquire about possible scholarship assistance.

You are invited to join us in decorating our beautiful Sanctuary and Chapel for the season of Advent! There are a variety of projects to be completed including hanging wreaths, setting up the Chrismon tree, and placing other decorations around the church. We will offer a light lunch at 12:00pm in the Large Dining Room for the cost of $8.00 per person. If you are available to stay and help on Sunday, November 24 please fill out the reservation form on our website under the “Coming Up” tab. In addition, the elementary children will join in by decorating the elementary area. The children will complete their project by 1:30pm. Please register now by signing up online under the “Coming Up” tab. Preschool nursery care will be available with a registration no later than Sunday, November 17. Help us prepare for the season ahead!

At First Church we value different voices in both of our worship spaces. As we move into our new sermon se-ries, we are preparing for a “preacher swap.” Beginning Sunday, November 10, Rev. R.G. Wilson-Lyons will be preaching in the Sanctuary for three weeks while Rev. Stephanie Arnold preaches in the Loft. This enables our ministers to build relationships across the breadth of our congregation as well as enabling our First Church family to listen to different perspectives and voices.

Dear God, Please help new people at church feel welcome to be themselves. -Elizabeth Amos

My prayer for First Church is that our diverse community remains a refuge for the spiritually homeless and religiously wounded.

-Blake Amos

My prayer for First Church is that everyone who walks in the doors will feel as welcome as I did. -Lacey Amos

That we may be a blessing and help bring others to grow in Christ with us. -Michele Burbank and Ethan Huie

My prayer is that First Church will continue to grow and expand and reach the people who no longer feel like they have a place in the church. I pray that it will continue to be a

safe haven and a place for genuine connection. I pray that it will be a place defined by its love. -Leah Thornton

That First Church will continue to be an open place for all and a beacon of hope for the Birmingham community and the world – that it will be a safe place

for immigrants and a place of peace and healing for those in need. -Steve McGuire

Our prayer is to celebrate and participate fully in the mission and ministries of First Church. We endorse and support the openness and inclusion for ALL interested in attending

and worshipping with this congregation. We pledge to honor and encourage our ministers and staff and support First Church financially to the best of our ability.

-Connie and Monty Hogewood

That we will always be a community that embodies the radical love of God, sharing that love with each other and with our neighbors near and far.

-Jane Millen

Each year we gather with other local churches in our Central District to celebrate the work we have done together in the past year as well as prayerfully commission the slate of future leaders in our local congregations. Join us on Sunday, November 3 at 6:30pm at Gardendale – Mt. Vernon UMC.
