Any time is a good time to read, but at night is perhaps the best.

What better way to drift off to sleep than with a great book? Our

readers agree. Looking at reading time across the world, we see

that activity peaks between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm local time.

But we also know looking at a bright screen before bed can be

hard on your eyes. Cue the announcement!

Today were introducing Night Light, a new feature that makes

night time reading more enjoyable and easier on the eyes. When

turned on, Night Light gradually filters blue light from your

screen, replacing it with a warm, amber light as the sun sets.

Night Light automatically adapts to the amount of naturalsunlight outside based on the time of day, giving you just the

righttemperature and brightness. The color adjustment is more

comfortable on your eyes and greatly improves low-light night

reading.

Night Light is rolling out to Android and iOS readers now, and

turning it on is easy. To activate Night Light on your phone or

tablet, update your Google Play Books app to the latest version

through Google Playor the App Store. Then open a book and turn

on the Night Light mode option (youll see a pop up in the app).

After that, Night Light will always adjust to the perfect setting.

We hope Night Light will help you drift off into a peaceful

slumber once you finish just one more chapter.

This is awesome! Wouldn't it be more convenient to

apply this feature to the entire phone? There are a lot of

people that don't only read from the Google Play Books

app.

Again another +1 for this to be a built in

platform wide facility. It's a bit of a shock to

the eyes after coming out of books to be

blasdted by the sudden brightness of the

home screen even if your home screen is

predominantly black. Indeed wouldn't it be

nice on laptops too.

It's not an app, it's an additional feature of the

Google Play Books app.

From the article "update your Google Play

Books app to the latest version then open a

I am happy to see that someone is finally paying

attention to issues related to display screen lighting! Ihave tried so many times - unsuccessfully - over the last

7 or 8 years to get someone's attention at Google.

But, this app doesn't use all available knowledge.

A much better option for reading near bedtime while not

supressing the melatonin release you need for good

sleep cycle maintenance is to simply have light

characters on a dark background! (yes, INTENSE blue

and yes, the supression of melatonin is a bit stronger

with blue wavelengths; but it is the SUMMED effect of

display screen light that matters, so it is far more

important to darken the BACKGROUND a lot (it occupies

most of the screen area), and leave bright easy to read

characters that lessen eyestrain... and the level of blue

light is too low to damage the macula)

This pertains to Google's home page:

I use a dark screen with light characters when reading

before going to sleep to keep from suppressing my

brain's timely release of melatonin. I've learned that

when I'm exposed to bright light just before going to

sleep at my normal time, I feel like crap if I have to wake

up at the normal time, and then it's hard to get to sleep

the next day at the normal time!

It is well known that bright light before your normal sleep

time PUSHES BACK your normal sleep cycle so that you

don't feel ready to wake up when the alarm goes off (if

you even need an alarm clock, a retarded circadian sleeprythym is the probable cause! It is normal to wake up

refreshed within a few minutes of the same time each

day if your rythyms are in sync.)

Well, if you have to do a search at night on Google with

your background set to a dark color, you encounter an

immediate problem: your Google search page doesn't

backlight the search term field, but leaves it the same as

your deliberately chosen dark background. This means

that the dark characters which get typed into the search

field are virtually invisible. You can't see what you'retyping!

The obvious solution would be to force a white or light

background in the search field so that the dark

characters you type become visible.

An even better solution would be to make the color of

typed characters white or the inverse of your dark

background.

and iOS. But does it only used on Google play books?

I've been trying various apps to achieve this. But all of

them seem to have the same problem. I am using a

phone with an OLED display, precisely in order to be able

black really gives off no light. But the problem is that

when a program adds a filter on top of the screen, pure

black pixels - those that have r,g,b=0,0,0 get a tint. The

result is that the black background is not black any

more, and now gives off light.

I think this has something to do with how the filter is

implemented in android. I'd expect it to be implemented

as a multiplier for the colors, so r * a1,g * a2,b * a3. But

that is not what is happening. So sadly, I haven't found asingle screen filter that works well with OLED.

And, sadly, kindle also doesn't listen to comments, and

hasn't yet implemented a yellow on black or orange on

black text....
