Silicon Solar Inc., headquartered in Ithaca, NY, is a leading supplier and manufacturer of solar prod-ucts. Inspired by a high school science Olympiad project, Silicon Solar was founded in 1999. Keep-ing the same spirit of drive and innovation, Silicon Solar has grown exponentially to become one of the nation’s leading solar companies. In December of 2009, as Silicon Solar celebrates its first 10 years in business, we look back with pride at what we have become as a company, while looking forward to an even brighter next 10 years.

The SunMaxx solar thermal division was founded in 2006, with the aim of bringing the best solar thermal technologies from around the world to the U.S. market. This technology has the potential to reduce 90% of a buildings hot water bill or 40% of its space heating bill, both of which together account for over a quarter of the average person’s total energy use and carbon emissions. Not only that, a SunMaxx system is extremely cost effective - with payback periods of as fast as two years. Be-lieving in this technology, Silicon Solar has pushed SunMaxx evacuated tube solar collectors to a commanding #3 U.S. mar-ket share, and has expanded a network of over 1000 dealers and installers nationwide.

Company HistoryInspired by a ninth grade science project designing a miniature solar home and encouraged by his first residential solar system installations, Adam Farrell founded Silicon Solar at the age of 15 with older brother Matt Farrell. With only a few hundred dollars and a workshop that was set up in his bedroom, Adam began selling solar cells and educational kits with the intention of increasing student awareness of solar energy. Shortly thereafter, his business expanded to the design and manufacture solar integrated products, including solar lights, fountains and portable power systems, among many other energy products. Adam and Matt incorporated Silicon Solar in 1999 on Matt’s 18th birthday.

1999: Silicon Solar Founded in Sidney, NY by Adam and Matt Farrell (in their garage).

2003: First Silicon Solar Office and Production Facility is purchased in Bainbridge, NY.

2002: Silicon Solar Pioneers Commercial Solar Lighting Industry by introducing the GEN-Light. The first high powered solar sign light available to consumers.

2003: Adam and Matt Farrell move office to Apartment while studying at Cornell University

2005: Adam Farrell wins Global Stu-dent Entrepreneurship Awards for State and Regional Champion, and global award for innovation

2004: Silicon Solar builds first green warehouse in Bainbridge, NY.

In 2006 Silicon Solar established SunMaxx Solar Thermal Division which offers a premier line of evacuated tube and flat plate solar thermal products nationwide. SunMaxx now holds the #3 market share for evacuated tube technology as well as #9 market share for flat plate solar collectors in the United States. The customer base grew from next-door neighbours to higher institutes of education and the United States government, serving over 130,000 customers.

Serving the nation’s demand for solar energy out of its four nationwide offices located in Bainbridge and Ithaca, NY as well as in Denver, CO; Silicon Solar is able to offer enhanced logistics support for their customers.

In 2009, after years of hard work, Silicon Solar has been rec-ognized in Inc. Magazine’s Inc. 500 ranking as the 31st fastest growing energy company in the United States, with a 390% growth in gross revenue over the last three year.

Silicon Solar has entered into an active roll in the nation’s solar organizations including ASES, SEIA, NYSEIA, COSEIA, USGBC, SRCC and ISES. Adam Farrell is active in NYSEIA and the New York Solar Thermal Consortium as the director of private sec-tor representation.

Silicon Solar’s CEO, Adam Farrell has won numerous entrepre-neurship awards for Silicon Solar, including being profiled in Entrepreneurship and Forbes magazine’s top entrepreneurs under 25 and winning the Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards as the state and regional champion and the global innovation award.

Notable Projects

The St. Regis Hotel in Aspen, CO is now using the sun to heat its domestic hot water, pool, and spas. The St. Regis, one of the most luxurious resorts in the world, is also a leader in the green hospitality movement. This 50+ SunMaxx evacuated tube collector system offsets 25% of the hot water usage and carbon emissions of the St. Regis Hotel. The St. Regis has taken a bold step in setting an example that many will be sure to follow.

The Grand Hyatt Hotel in Aspen, CO is another hotel boldly leading the way in greening hospitality operations, with a 60 SunMaxx Evacuated Tube Collector system for its domestic hot water, currently under construction. This will be one of the largest solar thermal installations in the United States.

The New York State Prison system is entering into an aggres-sive program to reduce its overall energy bills and carbon footprints with SunMaxx Solar Thermal Systems. The installa-tion at the New York State prison in Wattskill, NY, a 58 collec-tor pilot project, will reduce the domestic hot water bill and carbon footprint by more than 25%. Over 60 New York State prisons are set to follow, which will lead to a reduction on mil-lions of tons of carbon emissions and millions of dollars from the state’s energy budget.
