Seal ProfilesThe Rubber Company manufacture and supply a wide variety of inflator seal profiles, which are the perfect solution for use in challenging sealing applications. There are many different applications which can benefit from the use of inflator seals, some common uses include:

Our inflator seals are designed to be inflated with air (or a fluid) using a pressure regulated supply system. When pressure is applied the seal will inflate to create an air and watertight barrier in order to protect against dust and other contaminants on uneven surfaces.Silicone inflator seals provide working temperatures from -60°C to +200°C and even higher for intermittent periods. The expansion (sealing) capabilities of our inflator seals vary from profile to profile. However, the larger the expansion gap the larger the profile.

ClampsAs the name suggests, our inflatable clamps apply controlled pressure uniformly across the length of the profile in order to hold objects in place. We find that these seals are particularly popular for use in cutting and manufacturing applications or to hold pieces together while bonding.

ActuatorsOur inflatable actuators can be combined with more traditional seals or clamps. For example, an inflatable actuator can push a seal made or a harder material to seal against a rotating piece of equipment. Similar to how our infator seals function, an inflatable actuator will allow for a variations in a sealing gap. This can be particularly important for large scale sealing equipment.

COMMON INFLATABLE SEAL CONFIGURATIONS


Our inflatable seals can be manufactured in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit your specific application. We can supply them in continuous loops, which expand radially inwards and outwards as well as axially depending on usage. Inflator seals can also be manufactured into axial expanding rectangles, “U” shapes or other similar shapes using pre-moulded corners.The diagrams below demonstrate the different common seal configurations. The tables below show the minimum bend radii for radial inward, outward and axial expansion.

In this configuration the profile inflates away from the base of the seal. These profiles can be installed in a number of different objects using clamps, inserted into a machined groove or stretch fitted. Common uses for this configuration includes: airlock door seals and drum or bag filler seals.

This particular profile configuration is ideal for use in clamping applications as well as shaft maintenance seals and valve seals. These profiles typically provide large inflating distances relative to their size. Frog-Leg profiles are generally not well suited for this configuration.

Axially configured inflator seals are able to inflate in the direction perpendicular to the radius of the seal. This particular configuration is particularly popular for use in door and hatch seal applications.

Aside from joined ends we can also supply our inflator seals in straight lengths. This configuration requires solid, non-expanding zones on each end of the seal. This is followed by a transition area where the seal expansion increases until it reaches its full height.Air connectors may be attached through the base or the end of the seal depending on your application. If pressure plates are used to secure the seal in place then extended non-expanding zones will be required.

Straight Length Inflators

The size of a radius that an inflatable seal can be bent around is entirely dependant on the space of the specific profile. For axially expanding inflatable seals, moulded corners may be used to enable the seal to confirm to tight radii or 90° bends. The table below contains existing moulded corners that can be added to our inflatable seals.Moulded corners for new and existing profiles can be manufactured to the customers’ requirements, subject to minimum order requirements and a tooling charge.

MECHANICAL RETAINERS FOR INFLATOR SEAL PROFILES

Slide-In Z-Clip Split-Channel

An extruded aluminium retainer profile, which the inflatable seal is fed into from one end.

Snap-In Rubber Snap-In Machined Groove

An extruded aluminium profile, which the inflatable seal is push-fitted into.

Clips which are screwed down at set intervals. The inflatable seal is then fitted between the clips.

A two piece extruded aluminium retainer. Generally one side is secured in place while the other is removable to aid in seal fitting.

A high shore hardness rubber profile is extruded, which into a channel and holds the inflatable seal in place.

For seals joined into rings the air connector is most commonly joined to the base of the seal. For some castellated, channel fit and foot/stem location inflators, the air connectors may be placed in a side wall. However, this may have an adverse effect on the inflatable seal’s durability and overall life span. For straight length inflator seals, air connectors may be placed in either one end or both ends depending on the customers application or requirement.

RC-INF60 is a custom compound, which has been specifically designed for use in the manufacture of inflatable seals. Some key features include; high tear resistance and tensile strength properties. It is FDA approved to 21 CFR 177.2600. This material also complies with European Union directive EC193/2004. We certify that this compound is free from TSE/BSE bi-products. This compound is supplied in cobalt blue only.
