October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month there will be a flurry of acvies associated

with breast cancer. Many of these will take the form of fund-raising for breast cancer research, but we should also take a moment to reflect on important breast health issues. These need to concern us, not only in October, but throughout the year.

Despite the fact that women over the age of 65 run a much higher risk of developing breast cancer, a survey done by the Naonal Instutes of Health shows that they are not as concerned about developing breast cancer as they were when they were younger. A woman's chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer is: by age 30. . . 1 out of 2,212 by age 40. . . 1 out of 235 by age 50. . . 1 out of 54 by age 60. . . 1 out of 23 by age 70. . . 1 out of 14 by age 80. . . 1 out of 10 Ever. . . . . . . 1 out of 8.

The 1 in 8 figure means that, if current rates stay constant, a female born today has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer someme during her life. There are numerous risk factors that increase the risk of developing breast cancer, including family history and reproducve history. Despite these other risk factors, age remains the greatest risk factor. The longer you live the greater your risk of developing breast cancer.

These stascs point out the reasons why a yearly mammogram, along with a monthly self-breast examinaon becomes more important as women age. In the month of October as we try to raise awareness of breast cancer prevenon senior women need to be especially vigilant and compliant with the recommended screenings.

Have a screening mammogram yearly, or at least every other year. If your doctor does not recommend it, request it yourself. Yearly screening mammograms are covered by Medicare.

Make monthly self-breast examinaon a healthy habit. As the me of month for these exams is no longer of concern for post-menopausal women, do it on a date that you will find easy to remember.

Involve your husband or other loved one in the monthly breast examinaon. If your eyesight is failing you may need another pair of eyes to do a thorough visual examinaon.

Be aware of breast health each and every day of the year not just in October. Be sure to maintain a healthy lifestyle and be proacve. By raising self-awareness, we can hopefully eliminate breast cancer once and for all.

The National Cancer Institute recommends that women age 40 or older should have screening mam-mograms every one to two years. But what if you don’t have the financial means to receive a mammo-gram?

Women who live in the Texas Panhandle now have options. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health (LWBIWH) is making sure West Texas women can overcome barriers to breast cancer screening and have access to mammograms. In 2010 LWBIWH received a three-year $1.67 million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to launch the Access to Breast Care for West Texas (ABC4WT) project. ABC4WT allows the Institute to provide breast cancer screenings and preventative care in the underserved populations of the Panhandle and South Plains.

In the first year of the program in the Texas PanhandleOver 360 underserved women received screening mammogramsNine women are currently under treatment whose cancer would not have found44 women were identified as being at a higher risk for

breast cancer and were enrolled in a preventative care program also available through ABC4WT.

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in the US. It is the number one cause of death for women between the ages of 45 to 60. Unfortunately, thousands of area women fail to receive mammograms and other lifesaving services because of cost.

You don’t have to become another statistic. ABC4WT is here to serve women who otherwise might never be able to afford a mammogram. To be eligible for the program:Must be a Texas resident (top 26 counties) with proof of addressCitizenship not consideredCannot have insuranceNeed a photo IDIncome verification/proof of assistance

Women who would like more information about ABC4WT are encouraged to visit www.abc4wt.org or contact Sharon Felts at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Phone: 806-356-4659; E-Mail [email protected]

Imagine a workout that will strengthen and tone your muscles, invigorate your mind, increase your flexibility and reduce stress, all without putting too much strain on your body. Lucky for you: There is such a magical workout, and it's called yoga. What is Yoga?Yoga began in India about 5,000 years ago as a way to work the mind, body and spirit together as one. Since then, several studies have shown an active yoga lifestyle can help treat dozens of conditions including high blood pressure, mood disorders, diabetes and carpal tunnel syndrome.

A typical yoga class lasts 60 to 75 minutes and starts with a warm-up period of slow steady breathing and stretching. It gradually works up to 30 minutes of deep stretching, longer pose-holding movements and then wraps up with 15 to 20 minutes of relaxation exercises.

Types of YogaThere are dozens of yoga disciplines around the world. Each has its own philosophy and each moves at a different pace. Some of the most popular in the US include:

Hatha: Easily the most popular type of yoga in the US, Hatha yoga is a great way for beginners to get into the activity. Workouts are slower and easier on joints and the focus is on controlling breathing and stretching.

Lyengar: This is another form of yoga that's good for beginners. Like Hatha, movements between poses are slow and steady, but in Lyengar, the focus is less on breathing and more on balance and holding poses.

Bikram: Growing in popularity over the past decade, Bikram is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees F, with the main objective of loosening muscles and to sweat out impurities. In general, Bikram is not recom-mended for anyone with heart or cardiovascular prob-lems.

Ashtanga: Known as power yoga, this is one of the most hardcore yoga practices. Instead of focusing on slow and steady movements or pace, Ashtanga is like a

weight-lifting course where the sole focus is on strength building and endurance.

Who benefits from Yoga?Everyone can benefit from the relaxation, cardiovascu-lar and strength building exercises of yoga. However, some groups may find special health-boosting benefits.

Seniors: Posture, balance, flexibility and fitness levels diminish with age. Recent studies suggest an active lifestyle including yoga (like Hatha or Lyengar) can improve a senior’s balance and posture.

Pregnant women: Prenatal yoga is a new trend that claims to alleviate all sorts of symptoms associated with pregnancy like fatigue, swelling and poor diges-tion. And because the focus is on breathing and slow, steady stretching, the poses you practice may help out in the delivery room.

Asthma: Because the focus in many classes is on breathing, asthma sufferers can benefit from a consis-tent practice of the activity.

Take full advantage of fall's powerhouse fruit by adding pumpkin to your favorite recipes. You can add the taste of fall to many of your favorite dishes to ensure you get your pumpkin fill. Not to mention this orange fruit is packed with nutrients, like vitamin A and C, and is a great source of fiber. So try this yummy recipe.Pumpkin and spinach enchiladasServes 6

Ingredients:

•18 small corn tortillas•1 (29-ounce) can of pumpkin•2 (28-ounce) cans of red enchilada sauce•4 cups fresh spinach•2 cups of sliced green chiles•2 cups shredded jack cheese•2 cloves of garlic•1/2 teaspoon cinnamon•Salt and pepper•1 tomato•Chopped cilantro and lettuce for garnish

Directions:

Pour pumpkin in a bowl and mix with chopped garlic, cinnamon, salt and pepper. The ingre-dients will be layered in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Start with a layer of six tortillas, top with half of the pumpkin mixture, half the spinach, half the cheese and half the green chiles. Pour some of the sauce on top. Add another layer of six tortillas and repeat using the remaining ingredients. Top with the final six tortillas. Pour the remaining sauce on top. If you have too much sauce, reserve it for after it bakes as some of it will be absorbed into the tortillas.

Cover with foil and bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.

Serve topped with diced tomatoes, lettuce and cilantro.

"Congratulations! You're the Lucky Winner! Your name has been drawn!" Sound familiar? Scam operators entice U.S. consumers to participate in high-stakes foreign lotteries via mail, email and telephone. Solicitations are coming from as far away as

Australia, Spain, Germany and Canada, some appear to originate in the U.S.

There are various scenarios of people losing a lot of money; as many scenarios as variations to the scam itself. Rest assured, scam artists will say whatever it takes to get you to part with your hard earned money.

In one variation of a sweepstakes scam, the consumer receives a letter with a legitimate looking check. They are asked to call the number on the letter. They then receive instructions to deposit the check and return a portion of the amount for so called fees or taxes. Later, they are notified by their bank that the check has bounced.

In another variation, consumers receive a certificate, with an official looking seal. Instructions read "You are Definitely Sworn to Secrecy" or "Absolutely Confiden-tial”. The certificate informs the recipient that he or she has won millions of dollars; all they have to do is pay a processing fee. To make it look credible, the document lists the names of three other "winners," all of whom have collected their millions.

Notice the scams always ask you for money. But wait, when you win aren’t they supposed to send you money? When you send money, you’re making a purchase and the only thing you may be buying is a tough lesson. Legitimate sweepstakes companies do not require you to pay taxes, fees, shipping or handling, or any other fee before awarding your winnings. And, they are prohibited

by U.S. law from requiring that you buy something to enter a sweepstakes contest.

Other red flags:•Receiving a check in the mail that was not sent certified mail.

•Receiving a check in the mail with instructions to return a portion of the check amount. •Receiving the same notice of winning that was also received by the rest of the neighborhood. •A sweepstakes or foreign lottery originating out of the U.S. These offers violate federal law to play and to win. They also suck money out of the U.S. economy that could be spent on trustworthy businesses.

•Any variation of a statement that implies secrecy. If you win a legitimate sweepstakes why would you want to keep such good news a secret, and why would they want you to? Scammers don’t want you to find out they’re fake. •Requests for personal account information. NEVER give out credit card, bank account information, driver’s license numbers or social security numbers to people or companies you don’t know.

Responding to just one fraudulent sweepstakes notice or one prize award solicitation can open the door to many more bogus offers. If you have truly won a prize there should be no redemption fees, postage fees, delivery fees, or other conditional rules to comply with in order to receive your prize. Money sent to scam-mers cannot be recovered. . If you have had an experience like this, we want to hear from you. Call us at 806/379-6222 or email [email protected].
