Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week
Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2019
(Maori Language Week 2019)
Mahuru 9 - 15
(September 9 - 15)
Tena koutou Silverdale whanau,
This week is Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. For this we have organised some fun activities to engage
and challenge the school, staff and students to support, encourage and promote Te Reo
Māori at Silverdale Primary (Te kura o te Weiti). Feel free to encourage your child at home
in celebrating Te Ao Maori. If you have any questions please email your child’s classroom
teacher.
Celebrated each year since 1975, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is becoming a major fixture on the
national calendar, providing an opportunity for concentrated promotion, raising
awareness and generating lots of interest and positive change for te reo Māori across
Aotearoa.
‘Whāia te ara poutama o te reo ka tohatoha ai’
The theme for 2019 is ‘Kia kaha te reo Māori’. ‘Kia kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand,
meaning ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people using words like
wellbeing, language health, strength and revitalisation. When we say ‘Kia kaha te reo
Māori’ we’re saying ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong’.
Developing a sense of nationhood and unique identity.
Te Reo Māori is a taonga of Māori, guaranteed under the Treaty of Waitangi. The Māori
Language Act 2016 also makes clear it is for every New Zealander and a valued part of our
national identity. All who learn te reo Māori help to secure its future as a living, dynamic
and rich language. As we learn, we come to appreciate that diversity is key to unity. Kia
kaha!

Silverdale School Flippa Ball, Sunday September 8th
Following having to forfeit our match last week due to not enough players, the Silver Fins
were all revved up and ready to go tonight. We played a team called the Orcas, from
Whangaparoa School, who were mainly Year 6 Boys, apart from one girl. From first whistle
the Orcas gained possession of the ball and proceeded to dominate the game from then
on, until final whistle. Standard Killer Whale stuff. We did not manage to score for the
duration of the match, which is very unlike the Fins, however the Orcas put a lot of effort
into ensuring it was going to be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, for us to score, and
this proved to be a successful strategy for them. The lady from the Orcas was chatting to
me non stop on the score table, so tonight it was (unusually) very difficult for me to remain
focused!! In the end I gave up trying to do my write up as it happens, as I was so
distracted, and in the end, I was not even certain what the final score was... but it didn't
really matter anyway, as the Ref said it wasn't a close game. What does matter is that
with tough games such as this, the Fins need to take it on the chin, and what sport
teaches us when we lose, is we gain from that loss more resolve to do things better or
differently (whichever works) next time. Well done to all our team for trying, there were
some great moments in there amongst the chaos (India Beven was very brave and
committed in what was an impossible situation for her to be in) it wasn't easy, and as I said
to Alice, a tough game makes us appreciate the easier games all the more. Julian
Beall swam hard out as he does every single week, and along with Morgan
Lusher and Alissa Hurter, he demonstrated some solid attacking skills. Jamie Welch did
some good passing. Conor McCleery took a few great shots towards the Goal, but I will
say it again, tonight was very difficult when even trying to raise the ball to
shoot! Our Player of the Day was awarded to Alice Bauld (pictured). Alice had it
particularly tough tonight as both Blake Thow and Zack Gibbins who were themselves
both playing an exceptionally hard defense, were not in a position to be in 6 places at
once (!) or even free of opponents for that matter, so Alice had to rely on her very fast
reflexes, all the while trying to gauge which angle the ball was going to be thrown
towards the goal. Or her. Or both. It was very fast paced and required that and so
much more from her. So we all appreciate Alice, as being in Goal is no easy feat, and
seeing her in full defense mode when the going was super tough was a stark reminder of
how staunch a Goalie needs to be, and what she is capable of in this type of situation - it
is definitely not for everyone. Alice got a lot of action tonight, and did not let that other
team intimidate her. I say it once, I'll say it again.... she really is a star. Chin up Fins, we
are back in battle on Sunday!
