WE ARE CLOSING ON THE 5TH FRIDAY
In order to allow our amazing cooks the opportunity
to have holidays off, we are se'ng a scheduled

opportunity to catch up on their paperwork and do
scheduled maintenance throughout the building.
We are calling these days Fabulous Fi%h Fridays!
Each month that has five Fridays will have a
scheduled closing on that last Friday.
We hope that this won’t inconvenience you.
Thanks so much for your understanding.
Have you ever

Avoiding IRS Impersona!on Scams
According to Treasury Inspector General for Tax
Administra!on (TIGTA), the IRS Impersona!on Scam is
the most pervasive in the history of the IRS with 20,000-
40,000 people submi'ng complaints every week and an
average of 150-200 vic!ms per week. Caller-ID spoofing
is a tac!c used by scammers to disguise their true
telephone numbers and/or names on the vic!ms’
caller-ID display. This technique makes it look like the
call is truly coming from the IRS. Many of these calls
demand immediate payment of alleged back taxes. The
IRS released the following !ps to help taxpayers iden!fy
suspicious calls that may be associated with the IRS
imposter scam:
· The IRS will never call a taxpayer to demand
immediate payment, nor will the agency call about
taxes owed without first having mailed a bill to the
taxpayer.
· The IRS will never demand that a taxpayer pay taxes
without giving him or her the opportunity to
ques!on or appeal the amount claimed to be owed.
· The IRS will never ask for a credit or debit card
number over the phone.
· The IRS will never threaten to send local police or
other law enforcement to have a taxpayer arrested.
· The IRS will never require a taxpayer to use a specific
method of payment for taxes, such as a prepaid
debit card.

Can What We Eat Help Keep Our Mind Sharp? From Health & Nutri!on Newsle$er February 2017 from Tu"s University
There is a complex interac!on between what we eat and some
of the risk factors involved with keeping our mind sharp. Aging,
gene!cs and environmental factors can play a part in our cogni!on
according to the Neuroscience and Aging Laboratory at Tu"s
University.
What are some brain-protec!ve ea!ng pa"erns?
“According to the Scien!fic Report of the 2015 Dietary Guide-
lines Advisory Commi$ee, in addi!on to other recent research,
dietary pa$erns higher in non-starchy vegetables, fruits, whole
grains, nuts, legumes and seafood while limited in red and/or
processed meats, sugar-sweetened foods and drinks, refined
grains and added salt are generally associated with lower risk of
age-related cogni!ve decline and demen!a.”
“Dietary pa$erns consistent
with this recommenda!on include
anything from a Mediterranean-
style diet to a vegetarian diet.
Such pa$erns typically include
nutrient-rich, plant-based foods,
like leafy green vegetables, berries
and extra-virgin olive oil. On the
other hand, a diet that is lacking in
key nutrients and that is high in
unhealthy fats(trans fat and saturated fat) may contribute to
age-related cogni!ve decline.”
We all recognize that healthy ea!ng pa$erns promote good
health. They can also promote stable blood sugars which can
protect brain func!on too.
What are brain-friendly fats?
The brain benefits from healthy fats have been shown in studies
that reported intakes of only one serving of fish and their polyun-
saturated fats when observed over two decades in middle-aged
and older adults showed a 7% lower rate of cogni!ve decline.
Tree nuts (almonds, pecans, pistachios, macadamias and
walnuts) along with the ground nuts peanuts, have been shown as
a brain food. They are excellent snacks that benefit the brain.
Older adults have been shown to improved memory in a study that
gave residents 1 oz of mixed nuts daily to eat as part of a
Mediterranean diet for 4 years as compared to a controlled diet.
Which are considered the brain berries?
Berries, although somewhat higher in cost, tend to give you a
bigger cogni!ve payback. This is according to recent short term
studies. They noted improvement in remembering, repea!ng
yourself, recogni!on and memory tes!ng.
Berries have an!oxidant and an!-inflammatory proper!es that
may be helping problems in the brain. At this !me it is not certain
why berries have such a posi!ve influence.
It is recommended that we eat a variety of berries to gain the
benefits that are being researched—blackberries, black currents,
blueberries, cranberries, and strawberries.

IN-LAWS, OUT-LAWS, AND OTHER FAVORITE PEOPLE
Have you ever taken a family picture a"er you have married children? You know the drill; "Everybody in the picture", yells a
frazzled mother/grandmother/great grandmother. The photographer waits an eternity for EVERYBODY to be corralled, even two
and three year old Grandsons who are racing around, knowing nothing of the importance of Family Pictures! They also don't know
that since the grand and great grand children are close by their parents with "snatching arms", those parents will next grab and
plunk down their children close to the "old folks". The next picture will be Grandma and Grandpa with all the Grand and Great
Grandchildren (my personal favorite). It is now !me for the "Small" children (no pun intended) to be let go to run around and the
adults will take their turn posing. Someone yells, "Now just Mom and Dad and the siblings." This !me the Photographer doesn't
have to wait so long and the picture is snapped. When that picture is saved for posterity, someone is bound to say loudly (mom
has lost her voice by then) "O.K. now Mom and Dad and Siblings with the in-laws" (or spouses.) If your family is like ours, some
one undoubtedly yells, "In other words all the out-laws can get in the picture." This comment is followed by lots of laughing and
every one adding their "two bits".
Some families think that having their own Doctor or Lawyer in the family is best but our family would disagree. Our Grand-
daughter is a professional photographer and it is GREAT. Our son started a family mo$o that says, "It is all about
the documenta!on!" It is great to have a professional documenter in the family. We also have about three dozen cell phones that
can help with the documenta!on. I want my cell phone to be included, when an ac!vity is documented but someone ALWAYS
reminds me, "Mom we can send it to you from Our phone." I guess they don't want to pose while three dozen cell phones take the
same picture.
I do love this age of technology. I love Instagram where I can see In-Laws, Out-laws and other Favorite People like my sib-
lings, nieces, nephews and friends (young and old). I love "messaging" too, but our family in Japan can't get "messaging", only In-
stagram. That is why those of you that follow me on Instagram will see some Brigham City oriented pictures that will be picked up
by the "SMALLS" in other parts of the world. If you think I am kidding about "SMALLS ALL OVER THE WORLD", THIS WEEK WE HAD
MEMBERS OF OUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY in Japan, Viet Nam, Spain, Trinidad, New York, California, Nevada, Arizona, Arkansas,
Washington D.C. and of course Utah. That is not to men!on countries flown over and landed in. My Parents and Grandparents
would not believe the world wide travel and technology now.
Speaking of Parents and Grandparents, let's get back to In-Laws. My Mother had a very firm saying that went like this. THERE
WILL BE NO IN-LAWS IN THIS FAMILY. All children, grandchildren, great grandchildren etc. were loved by my mother no ma$er
if she gave them birth, obtained them by marriage or remarriage, or just loved them because they were friends to the people she
was related to. Mom had a capacity to love that all of us try to duplicate. All people who married into the family called Mom just
that "Mom" or "Mother". "Lo'e" (her given name) just wouldn't do. When I married Jack and started to call his Mother "Mom",
it just seemed natural. The special people that have married our children and grandchildren use Mom, Grandma Margie, or Marge
for me but they all love to tease me just like my "own" children. Our two sons in law (forgive the in-law part, Mom,) always say
they tease me because I set myself up for it and I am fun to tease. I will take that as a compliment. In two months everyone, in-
cluding the ones in Japan, will gather and there will be a whole lot of teasing going on! You won't hear much "in-law" or "out-law"
talk and that will please me just fine.
It has been seven years since I wrote my first Marge's Meanderings and May was the first issue. I wrote about "The Women in
Our Lives". As I checked back through all the previous Mother Day issues, I didn't find anything about the mothers or fathers of
the people our children and grandchildren married. It reminded me of a chat my husband and I had one evening. It was on the
very subject of the joy that our children and their spouses were bringing to us. Now we have to add spouses of the grandchildren
and that next level of happiness. As Jack and I talked of our family, he made the following observa!on. "We have certainly been
blessed by the people our children have married." Those of you that know Jack, know that he never wastes a lot of words and he
is always honest in what he says.
The following joke reminds me of the last thing I wanted to say about In-laws: " A man was talking about his wife and he said, "I
have been married to that good woman for over 50 years. I love her and I almost told her so once." Many of our children have
been married to their spouses for quite awhile and I have tried to write notes of "Thanks" to the parents of those spouses. It is
usually at Christmas or Birthday !mes but why not any day of the year. Why do we have to write notes just on Special Days. Any
day is a good day for "Thanking Someone For Making Your Life Be$er". Jack and I can say in all honesty that our lives have been
made so much be$er by the parents who raised our sons and daughters in laws! (I only use in-laws as an adjec!ve of differen!a-
!on) We can never thank those parents enough for the gi" of their children to our family. Maybe this Mother's Day or next
Month on Father's day we all could write notes of Thanks to these special people. Every !me I write a column, I hope my challenge
to "Write Something during the Month" will be heeded. That way we will leave memories for other people to enjoy, whether they
be In-Laws, Out-Laws or Other Favorite People
