Hi Melanie,
One of our trackers, Paul Flores, found the scattered remains of SS1093 (male) yesterday afternoon (Aug 28th) around 1530. He contacted Rachel Woodard, she then went out to collect the mortality data.
1093 was a small male, 225 MCL. His home range was 10% onsite/90% offsite. He was passively translocated through a provided hole in the fence by Rachel Woodard April 17th . 1093's cause of death is unknown. Evidence of mammal scavenging and/or predation is present. Fresh kit fox scat was present at scene. The carcass was found in several pieces across 15m with mammal hair and canine teeth marks present. The carcass was found outside of known home range, almost 600m from nearest project fence. We had at least one known successful kit fox natal den this spring just west of this animals home range.
We have been tracking this animal since September 2013. Tracking data suggests this animal spent most of its time in the spring near burrows 5938 and 3119. It settled into 3119 at the end of May and was exclusive to this burrow all of June and into July. Like most of our
tortoises, 1093 became more active when the monsoons started in July. It spent most of July and August in and around 5938.
Notable locations:
Burrow 3119 - 651756/3942894
Burrow 5938 - 651602/3942535
August 26th - 651565/3942559 - last tracking event, observed alive under shrub
August 28th - 651982/3942535 - carcass location
Please see attached map, photos, and mortality form. Please contact us with any questions.
