It Happened on the Way to the Strike Machine Story by John Vilsmeier

The first letter is to Lorraine & Bob Chambers. Had a strange thing happen about an hour ago. Being from Philly, my brother & I went to A/C, usually the Plaza, or Claridge. Found a bunch of player cards that Bob sent to me, from the Claridge & decided to look for varieties from them. Started to look at the names on the cards & my brother Edward Vilsmeier was one. My Brother was 6 1/2 yrs younger than I and Passed away in 1996. So it had to be quite a while back, as the card shows considerable wear.. Will surely keep this one, Thanks to You & Bob. - John To Bill Brooks, My Brother, did not frequent the Claridge, He preferred Trump's to gamble. Here is the rest of the story. One Sunday morning, Eddy had a bad week & had limited cash. We sold at the local market, early Sunday AM & had a good selling day. We used to go to A/C on Sunday evenings & usually spend the night. On our way, I suggested we try the Claridge first. We played poker & slots & he could do nothing wrong & won about $5,000, by morning. - John

From The President by Bill Jollie

This June marks the end of our two year term. It has been my pleasure to serve each and every one of you. I want to thank each of my amazing Board members for all their hard work and dedication. I also want to thank those of you who have supported us with your time and effort. We have been blessed with so many faithful members and I’m looking forward to seeing each and everyone who can make it to our annual meet-ing and party.

Annual Party by Bill Jollie

Last year we had an amazing time during our Friday night party. The Friday celebra-tion of our club has been going on for several years and each year it gets better. So, if you haven’t been able to make it, or have missed a few of our club get-togethers, this might be a good year to slip it into your plans. For those of you who haven’t been to the club party, one of the things you should know is that everyone who attends brings a gift for our drawing. Some people bring shirts from their home town sports team, some bring silver strikes, and others bring items with their state logo on them. The choice is yours, but the fun is for everyone. This year there is no cover charge but you must be a member to attend (you may join or renew at the door). There will be plenty of fun, food and prizes. The party starts at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday June 22th at the Four Queens. Hope to see you there.

Happy Spring & Happy Easter !!

Meet Kevin Sipes: Silver Strike Pioneer by Bill Metten

Eleventh in a series of articles about club members who started collecting strikes in the early days and have contributed to the club’s success.

Kevin Sipes (CHSS-055) started collecting silver strikes in the mid-1990’s, win-ning Jocko the Clown at the Boardwalk Casino in Las Vegas for about one dollar.

“That was the start of the madness. I wasn’t hooked at that point, but I did keep my eyes open for strike machines whenever we went out,” says Kevin.

A year or so later, Kevin found a strike machine at the Venetian. Someone was playing it. “I waited patiently for the machine but the guy didn’t leave, no matter how many he won.” recalls Kevin.

Kevin and his wife returned an hour later and the man was still on the machine. “I went up and started talking with him. He told me that he was filling orders for other collectors and selling them. That’s when I learned about eBay, websites by other collectors, all the strikes that had been released and those that were currently in play. That’s when the real obsession began,” says Kevin.

“I spent many late nights looking at collector websites and eBay to figure out what I had and which ones to look for. That’s when I began buying strikes on eBay and from other collectors,” he says. Now he collects all denominations from Nevada and outside Nevada as well.

Kevin had an affinity for silver as a teenager and bought a few 10 oz. bars before the Hunt broth-ers tried to corner the market.

“Several things drew my interest in silver strikes, primarily the fact that they contained .999 fine silver but also the unique designs and the fun tracking them down. In addition, I liked the gam-bling aspect and going home with something in my pocket,” Kevin says. Kevin trades and sells his extras privately and he has sold strikes at the annual CC&GTCC convention.

When asked about his most exciting strike “finds”, Kevin replied, “Too many to list. Here are a few. I won the Golden Gate Bridge from the Golden Gate Casino and I was annoyed that it cost $60 to win. I later found out that it was a short run strike.”

“I found a coin aligned Delta Saloon strike at a pawn shop next door to the casino in Virginia City. The man was asking $20 for each of his strikes and had no clue about coin aligned. However, while I was looking over his strikes, my dad was busy “educating” him on the rare strikes. Sure enough, he had 5 Delta CA’s. He was nice enough to sell us one for $20, but wanted several hundred each for the rest,” Kevin recalls.

“I enjoy the people I’ve met. There are a lot of really nice people in this hobby,” says Kevin.

When asked about the future of strike collecting, Kevin says, “I hope the hobby survives amid the rapid escalation of silver prices. I’d like to thank all the members who were involved in the forma-tion of our club and have contributed to its success. Let’s all keep supporting the Four Queens. They have been instrumental in keeping this hobby alive,” says Kevin.

Kevin and his wife were previously involved in the real estate business in Las Vegas, which Kevin says, “is a mess right now.” He and his wife are starting a Las Vegas business offering energy saving solutions for homes and small businesses.

We wish them success in their new business venture.

CLUB DISPLAYS by Bill Jollie

This year we are looking for displays that represent our club and show off your creativity with your collections. In the past we have had many great displays showing collections in different arrangements such as early $200 strikes, all patriotic strikes, all $20 or $40 strikes, etc. If you would like to display some of your special collections at the convention for all to see and admire please contact Cheri Jollie.

Pam’s Corner By Pam Martin

The Four Queens Silver Strike Slot Tournament starts off this year's Silver Strikers events. The tournament will be Monday, June 20, 2011 and Tuesday June 21, 2011. Wednesday June 22,2011 will start off CC&GTCC convention with dealer set up in the morning and their Early Bird Banquet that night at South Point. Thursday, Friday, Saturday June 23, 24 and 25, 2011 will be events for their forums and the dealer floor in full force. The Four Queens Silver Strikers Slot Tournament starts off on Mon-

day with two rounds of tournament play, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Tuesday will have a morning round of tournament play and the awards banquet Tues-day afternoon. There will also be a club trade session on Tuesday night. Silver Strikers will have our Forum, Club meeting and Party on Wednesday at the Four Queens. Our Club Party has always been a great event and here's hoping this one will be even bigger. Please remember to bring something to share for the Jimmy and Ed Show, this is al-ways everyone's favorite part and there have been some pretty interesting things brought for this event. In case someone has missed this event its a lot of fun and eve-ryone is asked to donate something. We started out with ideas of bringing something from your State, like being from Florida I brought a Mickey Mouse cookbook, a beach towel and sunglasses. We have some pretty interesting t shirts, flash lights, candles, candies, strikes, . Bring something that you would like to share, would want to take home and easy to pack. As for strikes, the Four Queens hopes to have two red caps, a $300 and the tourna-ment coin for all tournament players. Sam's Town at this time has no plans for a red cap, Mirage has artwork for new strikes, clads, a red cap and maybe a $300. El Cortez has artwork for a new clads, red cap and $300. The El Cortez will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary and hoping they will have a nice anniversary strike, knowing Rick Ronca I think he will try to have something very special. Both of these casino hope to have strike machines and in play by tournament. Looking forward to seeing everyone! Pam Martin

January 2011 Silver Strike Tournament by Jim Munding

Winning the January 2011 silver strike tournament at the Four Queens was a com-plete shock to me. I had less than 4000 points on the first round, then on the afternoon session I sat down at machine number 2...it was like that machine exploded, almost every pull hit something, I hit triples once at about a minute in, then hit them twice with less than a minute to go…it was like a big blur because everything happened so quickly…that session scored 9788 points…my last session was in the low 3000’s and I didn’t expect to win…it was an honor to receive the blue tee shirt from last year’s win-ner Wes Rasmussen…hope to see you at the June tournament.

IN MEMORIAM We have lost two more club members: Dr. Anatole I. Karmen in December 2010 Tracy Bottemiller in February 2011

The Board sends their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the above “strikers.” They will be missed.

If anyone has news on a previous or current member that has passed away, please forward that information to Cheri Jollie at [email protected] so we can acknowledge those mem-bers and send condolences to their families. Remembering . . . By Randi Karmen Guttenberg -

He [Anatole Karmen] loved the convention and looked forward to his trip to Las Vegas each year.

By Jay & Cheri Jollie -

We met Tracy and Becky Bottemiller through the Club. When we first joined the club, you couldn’t miss them. They were always the ones glued to whatever strike machine had new strikes in them. In a short time, we became close friends and enjoyed doing many things to-gether while the four of us were in Vegas for various club functions. A few years ago, we vacationed in Hawaii together (along with Ralph and Judy Fajardo). We also went to Washington twice to visit them. We enjoyed the time we spent together both in Vegas and the other locations and regret that we did not have the time to do more to-

gether. Tracy was a die-hard “striker,” and he probably knew more about silver strikes and the people in the club than anyone else. His knowledge, expertise and smiling face will be missed by many.

Membership Update

Reminders were sent to 30 members that were due 2-1-11, 19 members that were due 3-1-11, and 22 members that are due 4-1-11. To date, 60 of the 71 members who received the reminders have renewed their memberships. For February, March and April, all but 11 members have renewed, which is much better than the 25 just for the month of January that did not renew. As of 3-31-11, including new/returning members and removing members that have not re-newed, the current roster is now at 460 members.

The following members will be due for renewal during the April-June quarter:

Club History by Jeff Gaffke

Some events from the year 2003 The CC&GTCC Convention was held at The Tropicana Hotel from June 25 to June 28. A total of 11 Silver Strike dealers were a part of the bourse held during the convention. A Silver Strike trade session was held at the El Cortez Hotel on June 24. At this time, 22 casinos on the Strip, 11 casinos in the Fremont Street area, and 9 off- strip casinos had Silver Strike machines. McCarran Airport also had the machines.

During 2003, the Silver Strike web site was up and running. Membership was increased by 114 during 2003. A few more famous weddings that took place in Las Vegas: August 7, 1966 Charo (real name Maria Rosario Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza) married Xavier Cugat 1965 Judy Garland married Mark Herron 1963 Betty White married Allen Ludden December 29, 1967 Steve Lawrence married Eydie Gorme October 1949 Zsa Zsa Gabor married George Sanders For those who were wondering what a “bourse” was, here is the definition from Merriam-Webster Dictionary: a sale of numismatic (coins) items on tables (as at a convention). Follow-Up Items from Previous Meetings

· Forum speaker(s). One speaker has tentatively agreed. Cheri is looking for a sec-ond. (Cheri to try to schedule a second speaker.)

Moving Meetings - Our Constitution states that we will have a continuing relationship with the CC&GTCC. The Bylaws state we will have our annual meeting at convention. This year, the CC&GTCC has scheduled events that conflict with our meeting and party (the Bruce Landeau Auction conflicts with our meeting, and the Poker Tournament conflicts with our party). Discus-sion was conducted on the pros and cons of changing the meeting and party, and the following motions were made: (None required.)

Bill moved to change Item 6A of the Bylaws to read “The Club shall conduct its annual meeting during the week of the Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collectors Club (CC&GTCC) convention so its members may take part in CC&GTCC activities. An Agenda for the annual Club meeting will be prepared in advance of the meeting.” Cheri seconded. Unanimously approved. (Cheri to send Bylaw revision to Jim.)

Bill made a motion that we move our Forum, Annual Meeting and Party to Wednesday, 6-22-11, at the Four Queens. Cheri seconded. Unanimously approved. (Cheri to revise CC&GTCC Ad and submit for publication.)

We will still maintain a membership table at convention. (None required.)

SILVER STRIKERS CLUB NEWSLETTER ISSUE #62 Page 10

Silver Strikers Web Site 101 by Jim Quinn

I was asked by Bill to write an article for the newsletter about the club web site, so here we go.

In your hunt for strikes, if you visit the thestrikepoint bulletin board look at the top right menu line and there is a link to the club web site. There is also a link to thestrikepoint bulletin board on our home page.

The club web site is basically divided into three areas: main, catalogs, and archives.

From the home page, the links on the left hand side of the page provide access to all the areas of the web site.

The Club Application link will provide a club application for new or renewing members that can be printed from the web browser.

The largest part of the web site is the online catalog of silver strikes with images and additional information about each silver strike. The Nevada section is the most com-plete with the Colorado section needing the most images. We are always looking for images that we do not have. On the strike catalog menu page is a strike submission guidelines link to help you submit an image.

I’ve created a Related Tokens Catalog due to the interest in that area and to provide a place to move any strikes that are not strikes by the club’s definition.

How do I keep abreast of changes to the club web site? First, we have an RSS feed that will keep you updated when any changes occur on the web site. Also the RSS feed will let you know when new items are posted to the catalogs. Second, by check-ing the current news section.

Even though the club Bylaws, Constitution and Ethics pages have been created manu-ally there is a link to the PDF source document at the bottom of the page in case I’ve made any mistakes or you wish to print out a copy.

Got a suggestion to help improve the club then the place to go is the Club Officials section. You can contact a club official with your ideas.

Not to be forgotten of course you can see the Silver Strike Hall of Fame and Silver Strike of the Year winners.

I have created an Archives area, which when complete will chronicle the club; most of the archives sections are complete except for the Events section. Still a work in pro-gress to obtain and post the early years; the last couple of years are almost complete. This should provide a resource for researching information about the club and I’m sure future generations of strikers will be glad we did.

The Archives area is where you will find copies of previous news-letters, financial reports and other interesting items.

Do you have strikes for sale (hint to dealers)? Consider placing a Banner or Classified ad. It will help you, the club, and fellow strik-ers looking to fill holes in there collection.

As always if you have any questions or suggestions to improve the club web site email [email protected].

this year. The Board decided not to request donations for this year’s party. Bill made a motion that all party attendees must be club members; Cheri seconded. Unanimously passed. Those who are not members can join at the door if they want to attend the party. (None required.)

- Badges (both) - Cheri will have name tags available for the party/trade session attendees. (Cheri to make name tags.)

- Entrance Coverage (both) - Cheri, Becky and/or Judy will be covering the door and making sure all attendees are members and have a name tag. (None required.)

- Food/Bartender (party) - Judy and Bill had some discussion about the party at the tournament. Judy started the ball rolling with the Four Queens at that time to provide room and food. A bar-tender will be available from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Food will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. The food will be similar to what we had last year. A motion was made by Bill to approve expenses not the exceed $3,200 for the party/trade session; Judy seconded. Unanimously passed. (Judy to follow-up with Four Queens on catering.)

- Giveaways (party) - Bill will write an article asking people to bring gift giveaways from their re-spective states. Cheri will look into promotional items. (Bill to write article asking for gifts. Cheri to follow-up on possible promotional items)

Audit of Books Prior to Convention - Bill asked Judy to e-mail Jimmy Mahan (chairperson), Bill Brooks, and Jamie Martin to let them know when the books will be ready for audit. (Judy to e-mail Audit Committee when books will be ready.)

Pictures of Helpful Members for the Next Newsletter - Discussed pros and cons of doing this. (None required.)

Newsletter Mailing Problems - James Tenley, Rusty Udarbe, and Greg Boone mentioned during the tournament that they are not receiving their newsletters. Cheri will follow up with them after the next newsletter; and if they did not receive them again, Cheri will mail them copies. (Cheri to follow-up with members and make sure they get the newsletter.)

Membership Contest - Update - as of 2-16-11, we have 16 new members and one returning member. (None required.)

January Slot Tournament - 82% of the people that participated in the tournament were either current Silver Strike Club members or renewed/joined during the tournament. (None required.)

Spring Newsletter - We will need the Convention Agenda in the next newsletter. The deadline for submittals is 3-31-11. Will have the usual (Message from the President, Pam’s Corner, Pio-neer article, financials, membership items, and historian article). Need to include information on the Four Queens June tournament. Becky will ask Jim Munding for an article on the January tournament. Need to include an updated Club Coin order form. (Becky to follow-up on submit-tals for newsletter.)

BOD Elections—Al Lukacs will be running unopposed for Secretary, Judy is running unopposed for another term as Treasurer; and Bill, Cheri and Becky will extend at this time since there were no nominations. Follow-up later for special election. (None required.)

Approvals - Pam’s article was reviewed and approved for posting on the Web site. (Cheri to send article to Webmaster.)

Club Coin - We did not have an update on the Club Coin voting. Cheri will send an e-mail to Jamie asking him to submit the tally, copies of the bal-
