ABOUT USIf you received this booklet through the post then we are probably already acquainted. For those of you, however, who have happened upon it,we are Robin Silverman and Bill Brackenbury, known collectively as our business name, B. Silverman, a third-generation family business.

Bill and I are passionate about dealing in things that delight and surprise, that are at once both artistic and useful and that are, above all, simplysuperb. Finding beautiful items that meet the high quality for which we have become renowned, is far from easy but we both take great pleasure in acquiring pieces that delight our more whimsical customers and satisfy our determined collectors.

Creating this first catalogue was more difficult than either of us imagined it would be. We have a large and fast-changing stock and are focusedon acquiring high quality items that are rare, interesting and unique. In selecting only a few pieces we hope to tantalise and provoke interest andentice you to visit us, either at our website www.silverman-london.com, or in person at our shop in Kensington.

“This slight but sincere testimonial of indelible gratitude to William Adam Esqr. is presented to his dearly bloved daughter Mrs Clementine Adam Thompson 1812All speculation respecting the donor will be forever fruitless. The tribute is paid alone to the sentiment.Who builds a church to god and not to fame never inscribes the marble with his name.”

The provenance is enhanced by a charming messageinscribed on the plateau and the epergne stand:-

The William Adam Esqr. mentioned above (architect) is the nephewto one Robert Adam – who needs no introduction.

The Stirrup CupThe “the stirrup cup” was originally adrink offered to a man mounted on horse-back and about to depart for the hunt.

The term is now used for the drinkingvessel itself.

The most important of these cups weremade of silver and often engraved withmottoes taken from the chase. They aretypically in the form of a fox’s head or,more rarely, the head of a greyhoundor hare.

ProvenanceIn the first half of the 12th Century,HenryI gave rights by Royal Charter forthe citizens of London to hunt in Chiltern,Middlesex and Surrey.

Records of the various packs thathunted in Surrey from that time until themid–18th Century are scarce, but in 1798two private packs came together to formthe Surrey Union Hunt.

The example illustrated here wasacquired to celebrate the creation of thisfamous hunt, which is still meeting to thepresent day.

FRENCH ANTIQUE SILVER WINE HYDROMETERNext to the grapes themselves, a hydrometer is the most essentialtool a winemaker must have to be successful. The hydrometer, when used properly, can tell a winemaker how much alcohol ispresent in his wine before and after the fermentation process.Hydrometers measure the weight of a liquid (also known asspecific gravity) compared to the normal weight of water.Properly calibrating the hydrometer and knowing how the ratio of sugar in winetranslates to alcohol content willallow you to read a hydrometer.
