Personal approach

We focus on students as indiviualsWe are a university with lots of opportunities, and we offer a small, personal, accessible community that focuses on you and your goals. Instead of lecture halls filled with hundreds of students, you’ll find classrooms where you’re free to ask questions, raise issues, share your opinions and lead discussions with your classmates and professors.

You’ll learn from faculty members who have a passion for teaching and continue to stay at the forefront of their fields by publishing articles, participating in creative activities, and conducting leading-edge research. Faculty make the time to get to know you and talk about your academic and professional goals, work with you one-on-one, help you choose the right courses, connect you with internships and identify opportunities that can jump-start your career.

A full experience at a price you can affordSince 1894, Fitchburg State has been one of New England’s most respected universities. As a state university, it offers you the same comprehensive education of a private college—all for about one-third the cost.

In-state tuition and fees for 2011-12 are only $8,300, so you can expect to save a lot of your family’s hard earned money by attending Fitchburg State compared to a private college or university. Many of our students graduate with no debt after four years and those that do need to borrow money to help pay the costs of attending will graduate with 25 percent less debt than the average college graduate.

“My classes are small and taught by great faculty—no graduate students or teaching assistants. My professors have taken the

time to get to know me on a personal level and that has helped me excel in the classroom as well.”

Apply to Fitchburg State University

Apply as a Freshman You are a freshman applicant if you are applying to Fitchburg State directly after high school, never attended college, or if you’ve been dual enrolled at a college or university while attending high school. We evaluate each applicant based on standards established by the Commonwealth’s Department of Higher Education and the University. We look closely at your high school curriculum, grade point average, SAT and/or ACT scores, school and community service, recommendations, application essay, life experience and special talents/interests. For students whose first language is not English you must submit TOEFL scores.

Life and work experience are weighted more heavily for applicants who have been out of high school for a significant period of time and we ask you to submit a resume or summary of activities that explains what you have been doing since leaving high school.

For detailed information regarding admission criteria and standards, visit the admissions website at www.fitchburgstate.edu/admissions or refer to the enclosed Application for Admission.

To send your official SAT/ACT test results, use the following codes for Fitchburg State University:

SAT = 3518 / ACT = 1902

Apply as a TransferYou are a transfer student if you have a high school diploma or GED and have enrolled in any regionally accredited college or university after high school, even if it’s for just one course. Every year, hundreds of bright, dynamic students transfer from other two- and four-year colleges and universities to begin anew at Fitchburg State. Whatever your reasons for transferring, you’ll find it’s easy to get on the track that suits you at Fitchburg State.

We actively seek transfer students who will benefit from the University’s high-quality liberal arts and professional programs and contribute to our vibrant academic and social communities. Transfer students are evaluated based on a combination of grade point average and life experience. Transfer credit is generally awarded for courses completed at regionally accredited colleges and universities that match Fitchburg State’s curriculum requirements, and for which you have received a grade of C (2.0) or better. For specific admissions requirements and how to apply, please visit www.fitchburgstate.edu/admissions.

Our admissions counselors will work with you, step by step, to make the transition as smooth as possible.

MassTransfer and Joint Admissions These programs are designed to facilitate the admission and credit approval processes for students transferring between Massachusetts’ public two- and four-year colleges and universities. They guarantee admission and/or transfer of credit and a potential tuition discount in approved/linked programs with a specified GPA after completion of the associate’s degree. Interested students must apply while in attendance at their current community college or state university. Please contact your college Transfer Office for more information. Due to the competitive nature of some of our majors, higher admission standards may be applied and space cannot be guaranteed in certain programs, such as Nursing, Photography and Film/Video Production.

Apply On Time You will have a lot of things to keep track of when applying to college—be sure to review the checklist in the enclosed Application for Admission so you know about all the information we require as part of the admissions process.
