MARCHING BAND NOTES I want to say a big “thanks” to everyone who has helped the band get off to a good start this year. The students are working hard and have really done a great job with being flexible and trying new things. Working positively with change is something that will serve them well the rest of their lives. Our first game was a big success and we had a great time cheering on the team. Please encourage regular daily home practice. The exception should be when they don’t practice, not when they do. Private lessons are also a great way to improve their playing and confidence. We will be having some playing/memorization tests coming up. Regular practice will make these tests easy. I am so proud of all of the students after our first game. This is going to be a great year! Mr. Brian King Marching Band Director

CONCESSIONS SAVE YOU MONEY! HOW? DID YOU KNOW…The funds earned from our concession stands help to purchase new instruments, sheet music, make instrument repairs, schedule guest clinicians to work with our students, present programs like “Electrify Your Strings”, purchase awards and plaques, etc. Running the concession stands at football and basketball games is our largest fundraiser and we need your help. DID YOU KNOW…WE NEED OVER 50 PEOPLE EACH FRIDAY NIGHT to help with our 3 concession stands. This allows the lines to move faster! WANT MORE FRIENDS? THEN COME, GET TO KNOW OTHER MUSIC PARENTS AND HAVE FUN! Remember…”It takes a ‘Ville to support great kids.” CALLING ALL ORCHESTRA PARENTS AND STUDENTS…WE NEED YOU ON FRIDAY NIGHTS! Please sign up for Friday night concession stands so marching band parents can watch their children’s performance at halftime. MARCHING BAND PARENTS can then help at Thursday & Saturday games. PLEASE SEE THE SCHEDULE OF UPCOMING GAMES IN THIS NEWSLETTER and choose a date.

Orchestra Notes from Mr. Hire Welcome back everyone! The school year is off to a terrific start. All three of our orchestras sound fantastic thus

far, and exhibit incredible musical potential. I am truly looking forward to another great year with the SHS Orchestras.

2015 Northeast Regional Orchestra Members from SHS Symphony:

Every year we have numerous musicians audition for the Northeast Regional Orchestra (aka NERO); a select,

honors orchestra consisting of the best musicians from Northeast Ohio. This is a full symphony orchestra, consisting of

complete instrumentation for all sections including strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion. Students selected will have

the opportunity to work with a professional conductor and perform at Waetjen Auditorium at CSU. Over the years,

Strongsville HS Orchestra students consistently comprise a large number of musicians selected. Audition excerpts and

application forms can be found via the SHS Strongsville Orchestra website; click on the NERO tab. NERO auditions are

to be recorded and submitted online this year. Please follow the instructions on the informational letter. NERO rehearsals

and performances can be found in the back of the SHS Orchestra handbook. Auditions must be submitted online by Sept.

20. Please note: Students will need a credit card when uploading their audition to cover the audition registration fee.

Concert Uniform Reminders:

As the concert season begins, students and parents are reminded to review the uniform dress policy found in the

orchestra handbook. Students, who are not compliant, will not be permitted to perform.

A huge thanks goes to Debra Tulloch and Laura Wolford who have done an amazing job organizing and

coordinating all of the orders for our dresses, and will soon be sizing all the gentlemen for their tuxedos. Our Orchestras

thanks our SIMB uniform chairs and the parent volunteers of the uniform committee!

Please note the following:

Ladies will not be permitted to wear jackets, hoodies, or sweatshirts over their dresses while they wait

for performances because they are cold. Instead, they may wear a long-sleeved, black cardigan or

sweater. (without logos).

Ladies are not permitted to wear blue jeans or long pants under their dresses.

Ladies must wear closed-toed, black dress shoes (flats) for concerts.

All dresses must be hemmed!

Upcoming Events:

Orchestra Pot Luck Dinner Concert, Tuesday, October 13, 5:30 pm, SHS Cafeteria and Main Gym.

Information forthcoming.

Solo and Ensemble Contest:

It’s not too early to start thinking about Solo and Ensemble Contest! I highly recommend that all our musicians

participate in this educational opportunity. It is required for symphony orchestra members. Early planning is necessary

to insure adequate preparation and organization. All students will be required to review, complete, and print their

applications online at gccontest.org. This year’s Solo and Ensemble Contest will be on January 23, 2016 at Fairview

Park HS. More information, including the application deadline, will be provided some time in early December.

SHS Orchestras Website:

I encourage all parents and students to check the orchestra website regularly as much information is posted

including fundraising deadlines, concerts, and vendor information. Additionally, most forms and letters distributed

during class may be downloaded through the website.

Remind.com:

If you haven’t already done so, please register to receive important orchestra information via text messaging. It is

free, confidential, and a great way to stay informed with deadlines, events, meeting times, etc. You can find instructions

for registering with Remind.com in the orchestra handbook. If you don’t text, no problem. You can sign-up to receive

email reminders. Just follow the instructions.

Please note both my orchestra office phone number and email address have changed from last year. If you need

to reach me please call the orchestra phone at 572-7105, or email [email protected].

Musically, Andrew Hire, Director of Orchestras

GET YOUR KRISPY KREME DONUTS Krispy Kreme donuts will be sold during the 4th quarter of every home football game. This is a wonderful fundraiser for our band program. The donuts are sold in a box of one dozen glazed donuts for $7.00 a box. The donuts are fresh baked and delicious! They often sell out quickly, especially when it is a beautiful night. We typically sell the donuts at the Main Gate to the football stadium. If the weather is not cooperating, we will set up under the Home Stands. Don’t miss out on this delicious treat! If you have any questions, please contact Amy Christian at amymc0621@ yahoo.com.

We are excited to be a part of the inner workings of all those beautiful dresses and tuxedos that we see up there on the stage when our Concert Orchestras and Bands perform for our families, school, community, and in competition each year. Many thanks to Sue Wells for doing such a fantastic job all these years before handing the Concert Uniforms responsibilities off to Laura Wolford and Debra Tulloch. Throughout the year we have activities that require extra hands, and we could use your help on September 9,10,11 at the High School during the school day. We will be measuring and fitting the boys for their tuxedos and there is a lot of work to be done. If you are able to help us by working at one or more shifts over the 3 days, we would greatly appreciate it. Simply use the link below to sign up for the shift(s) that work best for you. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f044eadae28a1f94-helper Thank you so much for your consideration! It's not to late to order your yard sign! Let your friends and neighbors know that your son or daughter is a proud member of the Marching Mustangs! I will be taking one more round of orders and the order form can be found at the end of this newsletter. You may send it to me in the mail, drop it off at my house, or have your student give it to Mr. King during band class. If you would like include on your sign the section of the marching band or instrument your child plays, Drumline or “Color Guard”, please include that information on the order form. The cost is $20 and checks should be made out to SIMB. Questions? Contact Marlene Kinney at [email protected] or 216-409-8330

Hello and welcome from the Social/Hospitality Committee! My name is Faye Trepke and I will be guiding this SIMB committee for 2015-16. Our main function is to organize and provide refreshments for select events throughout the year, such as potluck concerts and the end of the year Senior Recital. Occasionally there are special events where we serve certain groups such as when Strongsville hosts the Greater Cleveland Solo/Ensemble contest, Electrify Your Strings, and other situations that are at the discretion of our Music Directors. If you have the gift for party planning, the Social Committee can use your talents! The first upcoming event is the Orchestra Potluck Dinner and Concert scheduled for Tuesday, October 13th. I will send out requests for volunteers as the date approaches, but if you know already that you'd like to help, please contact me sooner. Thank you, and I wish everyone a wonderful year of music. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Marching Band Season

Q: What is “Call Time”? A: The time all students should be at the school to prepare for the upcoming event. The time posted in the Marching Band Handbook is the Call Time. Q: Does my child have to eat before Call Time? Can they wait until the game to buy something from the concession stand? Yes/No…Be sure your child has a meal prior to Friday night Call Times, as they will not be able to eat prior to 3

rd quarter (approx.

8pm). Most instrument groups (sections) organize home meals or meet at local restaurants prior to call time. It is critical that students are well hydrated = drink fluids prior to Call Time in the warm fall season as dehydration and nausea can easily occur to those overheating. No Food or drinks are allowed on buses. Q: My child’s uniform needs to be altered…does the uniform committee do the alterations? A: No. Students may bring their uniform home for alterations after the ALL BAND PHOTO on Friday morning after band camp. Only thread, needle and a basic stitch may be used to alter the hems and cuffs of uniforms…no permanent tape or glue or machine stitching. All pant hems should be approx. 1” off the ground. Students whose pant cuffs are too long and produce holes will be charged damage fees. Q: Can we keep the uniform at home? A: No. All uniforms must be properly hung and returned to the uniform room after each game or by Wednesday evening prior to the Friday game if they are taken home. Q: What do the students wear under their marching uniform? A: All marching students must wear their white marching band t-shirt and shorts/form-fitting pants (NO JEANS) under their uniform. Underarmour-style shirts/pants may be worn under the uniform in colder weather along with the white band shirt. “Dinkles” are worn or brought to school and taken home after each game. They are not stored at school or in uniform garment bags. Q: Can a parent come into the school before or after a game to pick a student up? A: Unless you are a chaperone, uniform, or concession volunteer, you may not enter the building before or after games. When picking up a student after a game, you must park in one of the school parking lots. The main drop-off drive must remain clear for incoming buses. Q: How will I know when to pick my child up from an AWAY game? A: Your child can notify you with their cell phone or you may call Mr. Harbart’s voicemail line at 440-572-7105 for a recording of approximately what time buses are expected to arrive at the high school. Q: What happens if it rains during a game and the uniform gets wet? A: All students are issued a raincoat. In the event of rain, Mr. Harbart will instruct students to take their uniform, raincoat, and garment bags home and hang dry the uniform and raincoat on PLASTIC hangers separate from the garment bag. Once dry, properly re-hang uniform on assigned hangers and return entire garment bag and raincoat by Wednesday evening. DO NOT LEAVE WET UNIFORMS IN TRUNK OF CAR OR IN GARMENT BAG….permanent damage will occur. Q: What happens if the uniform gets dirty or smelly? A: Marching uniforms are dry clean only. Flag uniforms may be washed (find instructions on SIMB link). Mr. Harbart will instruct the students when to take uniforms home for the mid-season cleaning. Super Cleaners on Pearl Rd. at the end of Lunn Rd. is the recommended dry cleaner (discounted charge). You will drop off and pick up/pay for cleaning (usually jacket and pants only). Clearly write student’s last name on dry cleaning receipt, place in garment bag, and return entire uniform to room by Wednesday evening. The Uniform Committee regularly checks all uniforms for proper hanging and receipts. Students will be instructed when to take uniforms home for the end-of-the-season cleaning. Marching uniforms dropped off to Super Cleaners for final cleaning by a specified date will be paid for from the uniform maintenance charge. EACH STUDENT HAS BEEN INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO PROPERLY HANG THEIR UNIFORM. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT PROPERLY HANG UNIFORMS OR RETURN THEM BY DESIGNATED DEADLINES WILL LOSE POINTS ON THEIR FIRST QUARTER GRADE. Q: Fundraisers….what are they and why do we need them? A: Concession stands, hoagie sale, mattress sale, donut and candy sales, poinsettia flower sale, Southpark Mall games/decorations work opportunities, etc. All of these fundraisers provide the money to students via their music accounts* and SIMB to purchase instruments, music, awards, plaques, bring in special clinicians, etc. Students are given detailed information regarding each fundraiser. The mattress sale requires students to hand out flyers and advertise the sale via posters in small groups on street corners. Your support of these fundraisers continues the excellence in our music programs. Feel free to contact Sandy Treudler at [email protected] with any additional questions.

LOOKING FOR A HOAGIE CHAIR!

A Hoagie Chair?! Hoagie Sandwich and Wrap Sales have been a great way to raise funds for

SIMB over the years. They are well supported by the community. Our previous Hoagie Chairperson, Debbie Smith, has moved on. Therefore, we are looking for someone to replace her. Debbie is willing to train the new chairperson for a sale we would like to hold this Spring. If you are interested in chairing this event, please contact Mary Anne Messina at [email protected] or at 539-1974.

WHAT IS SIMB? SIMB helps to fund ALL of the music programs in the Strongsville City Schools, including elementary, middle, and high school levels, by raising money through membership dues and fundraising activities. The organization is not “just for the high school marching band”. It supports the orchestras and bands throughout the district. We help supply our classrooms with sheet music, instruments, make repairs to instruments, schedule guest clinicians, etc. We also help pay for our children to go to District and State contests in the spring. We would not be able to do this without you! The Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters relies on parents for monies earned through membership, volunteering and fundraising. Without your help we would have long lines at concession football games, less instrument repairs for school instruments, no sheet music, no awards and recognitions for seniors…and the list goes on. The $20 donation it costs for your family to become SIMB members goes a long way in our efforts to support our music program. Along with our many smaller fundraising efforts during the year, our biggest fundraising and support comes from the concession stands we operate during SHS events. We need your help to staff our concessions stands for Freshman, JV, and Varsity football games and for basketball games throughout the season. All the monies earned goes directly towards helping our children grow musically. WE ASK THAT PARENTS HELP WITH ONLY TWO ACTIVITIES A YEAR and become members of SIMB. There are many volunteer opportunities found throughout this newsletter where you can donate some of your time and talents. If serving hot dogs is not for you, we also have committees that need other types of help. Please contact me if you would like to participate more throughout the year. SIMB also offers opportunities for our high school music students to volunteer, including activities at Southpark Mall in the fall and winter. (Did you know that SHS music students help to put up and take down the holiday decorations that everyone enjoys at the mall?) When your child volunteers they will earn money for their personal Music Account, which helps to cover the cost of trips, uniforms, etc. You can always learn more by attending our SIMB meetings each month and by reading our newsletter. WHAT IS A MUSIC ACCOUNT? Each fundraiser provides a specified % or $ amount that each student may earn to be deposited into their personal music account. The funds can be used for any upcoming band/orchestra trips, to offset band/orchestra fees for uniforms/tuxes/dresses, etc. Students who volunteer for Mall games/decorations will earn a significant amount to be deposited into their music accounts. Please note that most mall work usually entails serious “work” in the late evening/early morning hours. Mall work sign-up lists are posted equally between Band and Orchestra groups in the band room at specified times. If you sign up, you are expected to arrive/work. How do we use the funds in the Music Accounts? A: When fees or payments for music related activities are due, you must inform the directors or organizers of your desire to use your music account funds.

TIPS FOR PARENTS Strongsville High School has a fabulous music program that depends not only on the talents of our students, but also on the support from their parents. Below are some tips to help parents understand the operations of our Musical Mustangs! STEP #1…Get Reminders: All parents and students should sign up for Mr. King’s Strongsville H.S. Bands Messages

To receive messages via text, text: @strongsv to (567)202-0846 (standard text messaging rates apply)

To receive messages via email, send an email to [email protected] (All personal information remains completely confidential…teachers don’t see your # and you don’t see theirs.) Frequently check the school’s music department calendar for any changes to previous schedules. STEP #2…Be sharp: Become a member of the Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters (SIMB) each year to help support the music programs throughout our schools…without you, we’re just plain flat! STEP #3…Sign up: Volunteer for at least 2 activities like concessions (Freshman, JV, and Varsity Football and basketball games), chaperones, uniforms, or other “as needed” opportunities. We have over 350 families in our music program and expect each family to help out just 2 times each year. You will have a great time getting to know other parents.

How do I sign up for volunteer opportunities? Log onto SignupGenius.com and type either

[email protected] OR [email protected] into the Search Box.

STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST INFORMATION Making plans for the months ahead? Be sure to check the Music Department calendar for important dates, additions and changes to our schedule. Go to www.strongnet.org and select Strongsville High School from the drop down menu. Once on the SHS home page, select MUSIC from the drop down menu under DEPARTMENTS. You will find two links to the Music Department calendar on their home page.
