Mah tovu ohaleikha, Ya’akov, mish’k’noteikha, Yisrael!

We have heard the sound of the Shofarcalling us to reawakening.

We have fasted and prayed, and considered our lives and our deeds.

We have given thanks for harvest, and peered heavenward

through the Sukkah’s spaces. Now our cycle endsand begins again,

with song and dance,as to our hearts we clasp

our tree of life.Eternal Torah!

The more we hold you close, the more you lift us up.

We will be glad,we will rejoice!

Blessed are You, Eternal God,Sovereign of the universe, forkeeping us alive, sustaining us,and enabling us to reach thisseason.

The Torah is God’s

great gift to the

House of Israel.

Israel without Torah

is like a body without a soul.

Like water, it cleanses and is refreshing.

Like wine, it gladdens the heart.

Like a crown, it raises on high -

higher than the throne of kings and queens.

When Torah entered the world, freedom entered it.

The whole Torah exists only to establish peace.

Its highest teaching is love and kindness.

What is hateful to you, do not do to another person.

That is the whole Torah; all the rest is commentary; go and

learn it.

Those who study Torah sustain the world.

Honouring one another, doing acts of kindness, and making

peace: these are our highest duties.

And the study of Torah leads to them all.

We rejoice in Torah: it is our life, the length of our days.

Praised be the God who teaches Torah to our people Israel.

Creator of the universe,You give us life, in which joys and sorrows are commingled inaccordance with Your wisdom; and You send death, with its promiseof eternal peace. Teach us to accept humbly and courageouslywhatever burden is laid upon us. Comfort those who mourn, and letthe light of faith illumine the darkness of their sorrow with the hopeof immortality. Strengthen us at all times with an unfailing trust inYour providence.

Barukh Attah Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha-olamha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz

We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe,by Whose will bread comes forth out of the earth

We have finished the Torah now, reading of the days of our teacher, Moses, and we have begun at the beginning once more.

We have moved from the story of Israelto the creation of light, resolved to make a new and better beginningin our study of Torah.

Before God created humankind,God created time, evening and morning.

God created the stars and the planets whirling in their courses, and the patterns of motion for earth and sun and moon.

God created plants and birds, animals and the creatures of the sea, each with its beginning, its flowering, and its ending, its rhythm of death and of birth.

Though we move in cycles, like every work of Your hand,we are not bound to a wheel revolving on a fixed axis;we can move forward in the path Moses taught us.

Inspire us, O God, to continue the cycle of Torah,strengthen us to renew the life of Israel,help us to bring Your light to the lives of men and women;
