SIMES celebrates its first decade of LED expertise, acquired from the late 90s.In 1999 Simes began to reveal some interest in those light sources that were originally conceived exclusively as SOFT LEDs for signal lighting: small, decorative low voltage light sources, powered at 0,5-2W.Such developing market inspired the start up of a close cooperation with OSRAM, for the engineering of new products designed around LED light sources.This first attempt gave birth to the development of MICROLED, a small, low voltage signal light powered at 24V.

Today, 10 years later, the efforts of the manufacturers are directed into the engineering of LEDs that can replace the traditional light sources by simply changing the lamp: this can be seen as a new starting point and the ultimate consolidation of LEDs as light sources in all respects. At the end of this journey, Simes proudly celebrates the 10th anniversary of experience and research, with the “10 years LED expertise” logo: a guarantee for all those who see LEDs as the future of illumination.

The start of this decade, characterised by encouraging market signals, combined with the need for smaller products, led to the development of MICROZIP, a small luminaire, specifically designed for LED light sources, and working at 230V was made possible by the chip-on-board technology.As LED technology became more and more efficient over a short period of time, temperature problems had to be overcome by intensive research on heat dissipation. This, together with improved reliability, opened the door to further exploitation of LED technology. Simes began to introduce such technology for accent lighting effects and for in-ground luminaires that were developed with shallower recessing depths.

1999-2009: PIONEERS IN LED TECHNOLOGY

It is important to underline that this development process was primarily undertaken on the diodes, that can be considered as electronic components rather than just light sources: Simes can be considered a pioneer in this field, through its continuous strive in research and development of modern LEDs with superior performances, improved colour temperature, more accurate binning, and better efficiency up to 100 lm/W - a result that was unthinkable only a few years ago.

More recently, the introduction of high efficiency LEDs consolidated the success of such light sources. Such success was primarily due to the continuous improvement of better performing lenses, reflectors and drivers. The characteristics of those components contributed to the improved performances of the LED sources. This step forward was possible thanks to the synergy between LED manufacturers - such as the PHILIPS LUMILEDS “LUXEON K2”, the OSTAR and DRAGON produced by OSRAM, or the CREE “XR-E” - and companies like Simes, that shared their know-how and contributed to the evolution of increasingly efficient luminaires and light sources.Along with the evolution of LEDs, even RGB and AWB technologies were developed, therefore allowing to dim and mix colours, as well as a more and more accurate binning process.

The COMPACT range is now enriched with new LED light sources that allow to use different colour light beams, thus creating suggestive effects.

The round and square versions of the COMPACT Ø 370 mmhave LED light sources adjustable +/-15° through an allen screw.

The need for a ground recessed driveover luminaire with reduced depth has led to the development of the RING/FLAT range. Innovative fittings characterised by a high level of mechanical resistance and excellent lighting performance that is found throughout the range.RING/FLAT is available in 5 sizes and comes with different light sources. The LED version is supplied with high definition lenses for homogenous and perfectly defined light beams.

The recessed drive-over RING/FLAT range combines reduced recessing depth, mechanical strength, reliability, friendly installation and maintenance, efficient optics with excellent light control. The reduced recessing depth makes the installation in proximity to buildings much easier.The recessing depth of MEGARING/MEGAFLAT is 200 ÷ 500mm.

SPARKS

The SPARKS fittings create suggestive grazing light effects.SPARKS is available in three dimensions and three different configurations; each one emits different types of light distribution depending on the light source and configuration.Besides the introduction of the MICROSPARKS and the new light sources, the range has been restyled, with a remarkable reduction of the recessing depth.

Thanks to the particular shape of the lenses, LED versions of SPARKS are now available, that emit radial light beams parallel to the ground.

POOL

POOL is the new submersion luminaire for the installation in swimming pools and freshwater.Available in three dimensions, it is supplied with halogen and LED light sources, either monochromatic and RGB, for suggestive multicoloured underwater effects.Its maximum installation depth is 3m underwater.

The holes along the ring of the luminaire allow for water circulation and work as an effective cooling system: the water enters the lower holes, circulates inside the recessing box and, once it’s heated, it flows out of the upper holes.

BLINKER

BLINKER is a new wall recessed luminaire - also available as a BOLLARD - with an attractive, minimalist design. It creates discrete lighting effects with excellent visual comfort.BLINKER emits a soft, uniform light distribution in a downward direction; the light source is concealed in order to avoid disturbing glare.

The fitting is available in three dimensions supplied with LED or traditional light sources. It is perfectly flush with the wall or the bollard’s main structure, thus enhancing its minimalist design.The lighting effects created by BLINKER are particularly suitable for walkways or staircases.

MEGALINK

The LINK range is now extended and completed by MEGALINK wall recessed and MEGALINK BOLLARD.The LINK fittings are particularly suitable for passages and stairs or wherever a soft and discrete illumination is required; MEGALINK is available in horizontal version with acid-etched glass, and vertical and horizontal versions with anti-glare grid.MEGALINK BOLLARD is composed of the vertical version of the fitting, installed in an extruded aluminium structure. The anti-glare grid, which is an integral part of the luminaire, directs the light downwards avoiding light pollution and the direct exposure of the light source, providing excellent visual comfort.

The light effects of the LINK can be enhanced by using adhesive coloured films that can be changed or removed when necessary.

The light distribution is in accordance with light pollution regulations.

STEP

Two new versions of the STEP range are now available: STEP WALL MOUNTED and STEP BOLLARD.Both installed in an extruded aluminium structure and supplied with the same LED sources of the STEP wall recessed, they are suitable for diverse applications thus increasing project solutions.STEP WALL MOUNTED creates suggestive wall effects, whereas the BOLLARD version is suitable for walkways and paths, being a valid alternative to a wall recessed illumination.

The upper part of the luminaire has a grid that works as a radiator, in order to dissipate the heat produced by the LED positioned underneath.

MOAI

MOAI is a range of bollards with a minimalistic and clean-cut design, suitable for the illumination of areas in modern urban context.With its different dimensions and light sources available it allows for various applications according to different light distribution requirements.The unique, essential design of this bollard makes its installation perfect in high profile architectural projects.The special optic system, combined to the smooth reflective surface, guarantees optimum light distribution.

The installation is simple: the lamp body is inserted into the bollard structure, and is then fixed to it through an allen screw placed on the rear of the bollard.The absence of visible screws enhances the essential and minimalistic design of the fitting.

Detail of the reeded glass diffuser.This kind of lens, compared to traditional ones, produces a more uniform light distribution even at the sides of the fitting, thus increasing the spacings between each luminaire.
