A guilty verdict has been handed down in what a provincial court judge has dubbed “the feud in Coalmont.” He said he hopes it will mark the end of legal problems in the tiny village.

Marianna Gatzke was sentenced to 30 months of strict probation after being found guilty of two counts of mischief Thursday in Princeton Court.

“People out there need to know this is done,” Judge Gale Sinclair said while handing down the sentence.

Gatzke’s conviction follows dis-turbing and escalating events that took place between April 2011 and May 2013.

During that time Gatzke would grind metal late at night in her yard while yelling profanities, court heard.

Several witnesses testified that dur-ing those two years they were often awakened late at night by the sound of Gatzke throwing wood against metal of some kind.

During Thursday’s testimony neighbour Neil Anderson, a retired teacher and now part-time library employee, said he stopped walking by Gatzke’s house several years ago because of signage on the property.

“Things started appearing, signs. They said ‘murder,’ ‘split the guts.’ I stopped walking over there,” he said.

During that time period Gatzke also played the words ‘murder, mur-der, murder’ through speakers in her yard loudly enough for her neighbours to hear. She directed floodlights in the yards of some of her neighbours

while they were outside and pointed car headlights into houses, testimony revealed.

During the trial one neighbour stated: “I lay awake wondering why she does this to us,” Judge Sinclair recalled during his sentencing.

“You should be ashamed of your actions,” he said.

Gatzke represented herself through-out the five-day trial, which lasted lon-ger than some murder trials. Sinclair said he gave Gatzke more leeway than he would a lawyer because she didn’t know all the proper procedures.

“I gave Miss Gatzke considerable leeway in this case as I do anyone self representing. That’s why this took longer,” he said.

Gatzke’s defence centred around her neighbours and the RCMP con-spiring against her. She said neigh-bours also made noise while building houses, and cutting down trees.

Following the verdict, Gatzke did not accept responsibility for her actions.

“I haven’t done this so I don’t know what to say. I think it is very biased,” Gatzke said before the judge deliberated on sentencing.

As part of her probation order Gatzke cannot have direct or indirect contact with many of her neighbours. She must refrain from making noise, audible to her neighbours, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and she cannot direct lights to her neighbours’ proper-ties. During daylight hours she can-not make unusual, disruptive or loud noises.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:7:00 p.m. at Little Folks Nursery School.

Board uses reserve funds to save special ed Andrea DeMeerSpotlight Staff

There will be no cuts in local classrooms this year following the school board’s deci-sion to siphon $1.29 million from reserves in order to meet its operating expenses.

“There’s been no layoffs,” said board chairman Gordon Comeau. “A lot of districts aren’t in as good of a position as us with surplus dollars they are carrying and they are forced to make cuts.”

The Nicola-Similkameen School District 58 passed a $29.2 million operating budget at a meeting last week, following months of consultation with community school groups.

Comeau said the board’s priority through-

out the budget process was to protect its investment in students with special needs.

The province provides $2.7 million to District 58 annually to support students with special needs, while the board spends $4.4 million providing those services, employing 60 Education Assistants for 2,000 children.

According to Comeau the province’s eli-gibility requirements for special education funding are too narrow, and don’t address the needs of all students who need extra support.

“If kids need help they need help,” said Comeau. The extra dollars in the local budget go “to additional support for teachers who might have an excessive amount of stress in the classroom, maybe kids who are not iden-

tified as special needs but at the same they need a little extra attention.”

The district has used reserved funds to bal-ance its budget in the past, but not to the level that was required this year, said Comeau. There is approximately $3 million left in reserves. “It will come to a time when it’s not there and we will have to look at cuts and not providing services.”

Comeau said the 2015-2016 budget process was especially challenging as the province clawed back $145,000 in fund-ing, demanding school boards find more administrative efficiencies while download-ing responsibility for increases in hydro and natural gas costs, as well as health care pre-

miums.“Every year for the past few years they’ve

been clawing back and not providing ade-quate increases to the overall budget to cover off inflation,” he said.

“That money has to be found somewhere. There are other factors. Transportation is not a requirement for school districts but we choose to do that for free. Some districts actu-ally charge for busing.”

Busing will cost the school board $876,674 in the coming year.

Salaries and benefits account for the lion’s share of the school board’s budget at $17.09 million, a 3.7 per cent increase over the previ-ous year.

Popular trail to be out of commission for one yearSpotlight Staff

An engineering report is expect-ed this week regarding the stability and cleanup requirements needed at the site of a rockslide on the Kettle Valley Trail, but it could take more than a year before the trail is reopened.

“It is likely we don’t see it com-pletely repaired until next year, that said, if there is a way we can do

some work this year we will look at those options,” Justin Shuttleworth the RDOS parks and facilities coor-dinator said.

Geotechnical engineers have been assessing the site located approximately 10-kilometres west of Princeton (at the 125-km mark of the KVR) since the massive slide in April.

“They look at the slide and its

mass and the materials that are in the slide. They also look at any material that remains on the slope so they can assess the stability as well and determine if further reme-diation needs to happen to prevent future slides. They look at how to deal with the material on the site of course and how to work in that tight location on a river with a bridge,” he said.

Shuttleworth said the logistics of where the slide happened is proving challenging.

“There is not easy access for equipment and vehicles. It’s very challenging and once we are there where does the material go? We don’t want more material to fall within the river and change the flow of the river,” he said.

The RDOS is working with the

BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations on developing a plan to reopen the trail.

The ministry will provide the funding and set the parameters of cleanup with input from RDOS.

The RDOS will manage onsite work.

The detour route for the trail system is Coalmont Road.

The KVR between Princeton and Coamont was closed by rock slides earlier this year, and is not likely to be repaired until next year.

RCMP are investi-gating a failed attempt to break into the BC Liquor Store last week.

Sergeant Barry Kennedy said someone tried to enter the liquor store, in the early hours of Monday May 11, by cutting through the back door.

At some point each of the DeMeer children has asked the same question.

It is a normal and universal curiosity. I can remember asking about it too, as a youngster.

Why is a hamburger called a hamburger when it isn’t made of ham?

The answer, which is as close as the nearest smart phone, is that hamburger patties originated in Hamburg, Germany. And you probably didn’t even know you like German food. Incidentally, the frank-furter is similarly named for Frankfurt.

Germany, it turns out, has a lot to answer for when it comes to 21st-century Western childhood obesity rates, not to mention heart attacks and strokes and the environmental havoc wreaked by drive-thru windows.

Lots of drinks and foods are named for their places of origin - Bologna, Parmesan, Chardonnay - and foods that are named after people are even more fascinating. There are hundreds. There really was a Granny Smith and a Doctor Pepper. Tootsie Rolls were named after a real little girl, but my favorite is England’s Fourth Earl of Sandwich.

I wanted to have a food christened for me as well, but muffin-tops already have a name.

The internet is full of useless information. Trivia is derived from the word trivial after all. And the word “trivial” has a Latin root that means, literally, a crossroads of three streets. The col-lection of trivia is called “spermology.” (Oh. It was hard work getting that in there.) Think of a question. Google a question. Get thousands of answers in less than a second.

It is the intellectual equivalent of the microwave; convenient but often giving disappointing results.

Ah they are sweet memories – when each living room on the block had a complete set of Encyclopedia Brittanica and the pride

and joy of every library was its dusty reference sec-tion.

We have forgotten what it is like to spend an hour trying to remember the name of a favorite sitcom from the ‘70s or the lyrics to a top 40 hit. Those exercises were stimulating, challenging. They were conversation starters or just purely-for-the-fun-of-it speculations.

Newspaper readers of a certain age will remem-ber Ann Landers, and her wonderfully readable syndicated advice column. Along with doling out help to couples in crisis, settling questions of wed-ding etiquette and bringing order to neighborhood squabbles, Anne opened the world of trivia to her

readers. Someone posed a question, and know-it-alls from around the hemisphere wrote in their opinions. Debates carried on for months.

How do you get red wine stains out of a pillowcase? Depending on which website you visit you can apply kitty lit-

ter, scrub with club soda and salt, or soak in vodka. What is the origin of the phrase “the rule of thumb?”Again, webmasters disagree, but the choices include English

Common Law that made it permissible for a man to beat his wife with any instrument not thicker than this thumb, or the thumb employed as a crude measurement for determining the depth of planting crops

What do you call a pregnant goldfish?Google will give you twit, twerp, twat, and also the fact that

goldfish don’t get pregnant. They lay eggs.Ann Landers was an intelligent and insightful woman. But I

think she would have felt that smart phones are misnamed. And I don’t think she would have used the internet much when writing her columns.

It was 2008 when word first surfaced that B.C. farm-land was being bought up to grow trees as a European carbon offset.

Reckitt Benckiser Inc., a British-based global manu-facturer of household products such as Lysol spray and Calgon laundry soap, bought 1,500 hectares east of Vanderhoof and planted aspen. For comparison, that’s about the size of downtown Vancouver from 16th and Oak to Stanley Park.

Since tree growing is permitted in the Agricultural Land Reserve, a use intended for fruit, ornamental or nursery trees, no permission was needed. And to meet the carbon offset rules of the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change, a 100-year restrictive covenant against harvesting trees was issued by B.C.’s land titles office.

Goodbye farmland. After that deal, the B.C. government changed legisla-

tion in 2011 to require permission from the Agricultural Land Commission to make these covenants valid. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick says he is waiting for that process to be tested.

It likely will be soon. Reckitt has bought another 7,000 hectares of cleared farmland from Prince George down through the Cariboo to Quesnel. NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham has been tracking these acquisitions, and she says there are more deals in the works.

Last fall, the Bulkley Nechako Regional District wrote to Victoria Wood, Reckitt Benckiser’s “global head of sustainability,” telling her that “the planting of trees on centrally located and productive agricultural lands is not appropriate” and would weaken local farm economies.

Wood responded that the RB Trees project targets only “marginally productive” land such as pasture, abandoned farms or those that have been up for sale for long periods.

Former Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson raised the issue in the legislature in 2008, noting that Crown land near Vanderhoof had been sold for farming, bought by a numbered company and then “flipped” for around $1 million to RB Trees.

Now mayor of Quesnel, Simpson takes issue with the company’s claims with his usual shyness.

“It’s bull----,” he told me. “This isn’t marginal land.”He said it includes prime alfalfa fields and historical

ranch and forage crop lands. In one case, neighbours found out about the new use when they saw a helicopter spraying herbicide to prepare the area for tree seedlings.

In the Cariboo as in other rural B.C. areas, aging farm-ers want to retire and young people keen to work seven days a week are in short supply. So naturally there is pressure to sell.

Perhaps Letnick is right, and the ALC will stop pro-ductive farmland from being turned back into forest. While we’re waiting for that, here are a couple of other questions.

What happens when these forests burn? The first big forest fire of 2015 grew out of control near Prince George last week. And since aspen doesn’t last 100 years, what is its real carbon offset value?

How’s that European carbon trading market doing? It’s a mess, with the cost of emitting a tonne of carbon dioxide fallen far below what’s needed to be effective, and Interpol investigating various schemes to game the system.

Remember B.C’s own Pacific Carbon Trust? This Gordon Campbell brainchild to sell carbon offsets was quietly greenhouse gassed after the Auditor General revealed its first two big projects were of questionable value to say the least.

Finally, does anyone really think that returning B.C.’s scarce farmland to forest is a good way to change the weather? Would it offset the loss of local production and trucking in farm produce from elsewhere?

And where are B.C.’s tireless food security advocates on this dubious scheme? - Tom Fletcher, Black Press

Hedley resident suspicious of land trust proposalTo the editorI oppose the attempt by cer-

tain people to start a Community Land Trust (CLT) anywhere in the Similkameen Valley.

My research shows:

1. CLTs can only exist by constantly soliciting land dona-tions and grants.

2. The elderly are prime targets for property donations.

3. Foundations and chari-ties in the Poverty Business typi-cally consume 85% on adminis-

tration – 15% gets to the poor.4. Most CLT proponents

espouse anti-development and collectivist Ideologies.

5. Scams are common where charitable status is in effect.

A CLT claims to provide affordable housing. Hedley of all places has no problem in this respect. So I’m wondering… What’s the motivation?

Now suppose that the NDP is elected, big grant money hits

town, properties come under their control, maybe even a rehab facility…

Socialist programs using “other people’s money” are something I’d rather not see.

And because our housing is so affordable, I think their efforts might be better made where the housing is 10 times higher and the poor are stacked three deep on the sidewalks.

To the editorHope everyone is enjoying

their spring so far. We have an opportunity for you to take the afternoon off and enjoy our Spring Team and Fashion Show. Tickets for this wonderful after-noon are only $5.

They can be purchased at the Thrift Shop or from some of our members. This year for the first time it will be held in the Legion Hall. The date is Monday May 25th at 1 pm. There will be many, many door prizes and we will also be having a Silent Auction table with 9 groups of items up for bids.

So much for the fun stuff. The Hospital Auxiliary has one major problem at this time. We are

calling on all of you in this won-derful town to give us some help. You are all aware of how much our Thrift Shop raises during a typical year, tens of thousands of dollars which we donate to ben-efit our community in all things health-related. We also keep a huge amount of stuff out of our landfill.

The Auxiliary has been around since 1910. We are good at rais-ing money and seeing it gets to the right places. However, here is our problem – we need more volunteers for a number of reasons. We have lost a num-ber of our life members in the last few years. Unfortunately no one lives forever. A lot of our members have sold their homes

and moved from this community. Some of us are just plain getting older or having medical problems and can’t do the same things we have done in the past. For this reason we are again appealing to Princetonites to come and join us. If you can only work a few hours or would rather do something at home we will find you some-thing worthwhile to do. You will not regret it and you will meet new friends and be a very valu-able part of our worthwhile work. Please come into the Thrift Shop and pick up our application form so we can start working together. If you prefer or have some ques-tions please give me a call and I will help you, 295 1577.

The consulting firm, Value Chain International, recently reported that in Canada $31 billion worth of food is wasted annually. In view of this, I’m impressed with what Okanagan Gleaners Society of Oliver is doing. The Gleaners have devel-oped an ingenious but simple formula using unwanted food to feed hungry people around the globe.

In a two hour tour of the Gleaners plant, Society president Lex Haagen told Linda and me, “We’re almost 100 percent volun-teer and donor driven. Except for the gen-eral manager, we’re all volunteers.” Lex appreciates the help being given by people in the Similkameen Valley. He hopes many more will catch the vision and pitch in.

A former City of Abbotsford fire chief, Lex is lean and fit. He has certainly caught the vision. His enthusiasm and commit-ment are palpable. Observing the approxi-mately 20 volunteers at work, we sensed an aura of determination and contentment. Intent on their assignments, they seemed largely oblivious to our presence.

We learned the Gleaners depend on donations of beans, egg plant, onions, car-rots, brussel sprouts , peas, potatoes, etc. They also welcome apples. The produce is chopped up, dried and stored in barrels. The apple chips are a treat particularly prized by children.

“By next April we’ll have about 900 full barrels,” Lex explained. “We will use an assembly line of people to scoop a mea-sured amount of mix into a moving bucket.

This will be transferred into plastic bags. Each bag will contain 15 to 20 ingredients and provide 100 servings of soup mix. Recipients will add their local spices. The apple chips are bagged separately.”

Lex introduced us to Jack Woods, for-merly in the trucking business. Now 81, he said, “I’ve been coming since 2003. Two weeks in spring and two in fall.” His face suggests strength of character, his voice exudes passion.

Sharon McClennan saw hungry children when she volunteered in the Philippines. She asked, “where else can I go to help produce 21,000 meals per day for people who are starving?”

As we passed the noisy dehydrators, we needed to listen carefully as Lex continued. “The funds to run and maintain the equip-ment come almost entirely from individual donors. The vegetables and apples are sup-plied by farmers and others. If the quantity is fairly large, we will pick up. We also use frozen product, provided by Lucerne Foods in Abbotsford. Cobs in Penticton and Tim Horton’s in Oliver donate (day old) treats for coffee time.”

The soup mixes and apple chips are distributed through established, reputa-ble organizations such as World Vision, Mennonite Central Committee, Missions Without Borders and several others. Hungry people in over 40 countries on 5 continents have received the mixes.

At least eight Gleaners societies current-ly operate in Canada. “We make good use of food that would otherwise be wasted,” Lex told us. “Each year our plant produces

at least 5 million servings. To accomplish this we depend on donations of produce and money. We also need people with specific skills such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanics, and accounting.”

A note from an appreciative African aid worker describes the Gleaners impact in one village. “After the people here had been eating the soup mix for a month, we noticed they were more alert and had energy to work.”

Toward the end of our tour, Lex observed, “it’s easy to write a cheque, but there is a deep satisfaction that comes from hands on experience. Volunteers know they are personally providing nutritious food to hungry people.”

Okanagan Gleaners began operations in 1996, the vision of a small group of Christians concerned about food being wasted while others starved. “We welcome anyone who wants to help,” Lex said. “We never turn anyone away.”

Volunteers arrive from all parts of B.C. and the prairie provinces, even Ontario. Twelve serviced RV sites are available, plus tenting in the orchard. Registration is important from April to October. “In sum-mer we get quite a few families,” Lex said. “It’s a good way for children to learn about giving to those who have little.” According to the Gleaners website, “if you can clean and chop, you can help.” They work from 8:30 to noon.

Princeton rocks Mining Days celebration

Marlee RicePrinceton celebrated a successful Mining Days last Tuesday that included a tour of Copper Mountain Mine, as well as many displays and activities in Veterans’ Square. Hundreds of Princeton residents took part in the event, that included free admission to the museum courtesy of Copper Mountain. Above, Parker Gunn takes part in an emergency rope pull demonstration while Chris Hartinger looks on. Right, Addy Garton, Sienna Garton and Kiley Hartinger show off the face painting and free balloons.

While there is no doubt holiday weekend traffic created frustration for visitors and residents alike, at least one summer resident beat the streets with an unique way to get to the family vacation home. This helicopter got an Osprey Lake family to its getaway without any fuss – although it created some excite-ment in the community.

On Friday May 8, 2015, Mrs. Bernice Millicent Brewer of Okanagan Falls passed away peacefully after a long illness with family by her side at the Penticton Regional Hospital at the age of 78 years. She was predeceased by her parents Johnny and Edith Brewer and siblings Ray Brewer, Alice Stewart, Douglas Brewer, Harvey Brewer and Skip Brewer.Bernice will be fondly remembered by her loving family including children Linda (Lenny) Stadnyk, Terry Berg and Shane Berg; siblings Matt (Edith) Rebryna, Bella Marcy and Darryl (Sharon) Brewer; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Bernice was a very loving mother, devoted grandmother, a proud great-grandmother and a wonderful friend. She was born in Hedley, BC and was the rst baby girl born during the ickel Plate

gold rush. In her younger years the family moved to Olalla, BC where she started her schooling which she loved very much. Due to the passing of her mother she had to leave school to help her father look after her younger siblings. Later in life she moved to Vancouver and started her own family. In 1980 she left Vancouver and returned to the Okanagan where she remained until her passing. Over the years, Bernice worked as a waitress, a cook and retired after working at a packing house. She loved gardening, playing bingo, cooking, baking, watching Dancing with the Stars and watching all sports especially the Olympics.Bernice will always be remembered for her sense of humour, kindness and a helping hand to all who reached out to her. But if she had to speak up, she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Bernice was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by her children and all those who really knew her.Scattering of ashes will take place on June 1 , 2015 at ickel Plate where she grew up. Please contact the family for details.Donations are gratefully accepted to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.Condolences & Tributes may be directed
