Walde Jolie Diabete, Lucane Lafortune, Amy Schear and Rabbi Jonathon Roos at a service honoring Lucane’s contributions to Sinai House.

From the President and the Executive Director

This past year was one of transition for Sinai House. Walde Jolie Diabete returned as our Assistant Program Director in January. In March, we bid farewell and honored our outstanding Executive Director, Lucane LaFortune, who was key to our growth and success during her six-year tenure. We welcomed Sadija A. Smiley as Lucane’s successor. Sadija, who comes to Sinai House with over fifteen years of experience in non-profit and community-based organizations, hit the ground running and has already instituted several new programs aimed at enhancing the cohesiveness of our programming and strengthening the residents’ sense of community.

Our focus this past year has been to address two main challenges for our residents. Housing options for low-income, Washington, D.C. residents are decreasing while the competition for secure, full-time jobs in the area is increasing. We formalized our workforce development program for both current and former residents and are also identifying more resources and housing options available to our residents after they leave Sinai House. We have granted extensions to residents when necessary, allowing them to remain at Sinai House while continuing their journey to independence. Three residents moved out this past year, tangible results of our efforts, enabling us to begin assisting three new families on their journey to independence.

Journey to Independence

Our full-time Executive Director, whose office is on-site, works with each mother to develop a plan that focuses on the mother’s career and educational development, the educational and emotional development of her children, and mental health support for each family member where needed. Our Executive Director regularly meets with the families, confers with our professional service providers to continuously assess the progress of each family member and adjusts their plans accordingly.

Education

An educational consultant administers an educational assessment for each child, observes them in the classroom and helps the parents advocate for the best school options. This year, she helped place a child with significant learning issues into an appropriate school.

Mental Health & Well-Being

Many of our families have experienced trauma in their lives. We have long offered therapy to our adult residents. This year, we added a child therapist to our team of regular professional consultants. She will assess every child who arrives at Sinai House and will help our staff monitor each child’s emotional progress. Therapists meet with current and former resident adults and children as needed.

Financial

An outside consultant helps each resident create a budget, understand her credit score and work to improve her financial status. The residents are introduced to living wills and insurance and informed of housing assistance programs. Residents are required to set aside a specified amount each month for their savings, which is matched on a 2:1 basis from the Tricia Davis Matching Savings Program. Most residents succeed in leaving Sinai House with about $5,000 in savings.

Employment

We launched our career counseling program last summer to enhance the ability of our current and former residents to identify, secure and maintain good jobs that fit their interests and skills. Our first job fair featured four employers who met with eleven current and former residents to discuss potential opportunities. We also assist residents in furthering their education by providing loans or covering the costs for college and/or job certification courses.

Our Resilient Residents

• Three of our residents moved out this pastyear. TG, pictured at right, purchased ahome in Maryland in August 2017 andlives there with her three sons. A secondresident moved into an apartment inSoutheast DC last March. A third resident, inspired by TG’s story at the Homes &Hearts Shabbat in December, closed on ahome in Southeast DC in August 2018.

• With newly-acquired skills and enhancedself-esteem from our career-counseling program, one of our residents completed a medical certification program and moved from an hourly job at Dunkin Donuts to a full-time job with benefits at Johns Hopkins.

• A second resident landed a job as a paralegal. Another resident secured a full-time job witha Japanese government agency at a pay rate of $19 per hour. She accomplished this whilecaring for a child with special needs, handling the aftermath of domestic abuse, andconfronting divorce and child custody hearings.

• One resident completed a 13-week program with StreetWise Partners, a DC nonprofit that provides workforce mentoring of professional and soft skill development.

• All adult residents are currently employed full-time.

• One current resident graduated from the University of the District of Columbia with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice.

• A former resident received her BA in Human Relations from Trinity University. A loan from Sinai House assisted her with tuition expenses.

Alumni resident, TG, recounted her moving journey of independence at the annual Homes & Hearts Shabbat at Temple Sinai on December 8, 2017.

An alumni resident child, now a young adult, applied to Prince George's Community College and purchased books with money earned from the Sinai House Good Grades Program.

Our Volunteer Community When a family moves into Sinai House, they also gain a community. Many resident adults and children form caring, meaningful connections with each other, the staff, board members and volunteers, which continue long after they leave Sinai House. Volunteers are an integral part of the Sinai House program.

Members of our all-volunteer Board of Directors attend bi-monthly meetings, help plan programs, write grants, and serve on our Building and Community Outreach committees.

Tutors meet with elementary and middleschool-aged children weekly and work onmath, reading, science and language arts.

Playtime facilitators come to SinaiHouse weekly to play board games, take ashort walk to the park, or watch a moviewith resident children.

Mentors spend time one-on-one with a child once or twice a month to go to a basketball game or engage in another shared interest.

Enrichment Activities: Throughout theyear, volunteers from Temple Sinai engageour children in fun activities, includingbaseball games, festivals, and camping trips. We also ensure that all children canparticipate in summer camp.

Fourth Annual Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run for Sinai House

Despite the soggy ground and the threatening skies, the spirit of community was high among the approximately 250 runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters who attended the Fourth Annual Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run for Sinai House on Mother’s Day. The rain stopped just as the participants began arriving. Perhaps it was the blessing by the Temple Sinai clergy that kept the sky clear until just as the last volunteers were packing up. Over 250 generous business sponsors and individual donors and 290 registrants helped us raise over $101,000!

Page 7: Sinai Assisted Housing Foundation 2017 – 2018 Annual Report · 2018-11-12 · Sinai Assisted Housing Foundation 2017-2018 Annual Report 3100 Military Road NW, Washington, DC 20015

Fundraising Sinai House depends on the support of its generous donors and does not receive any government funds. In our fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2018, about a quarter of our revenue came from foundation grants, about one fifth came from individual donations throughout the year and 40% came from the donations, business sponsorship and registrations fees for the 2018 Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run for Sinai House.
