POLIO Project
The CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) supports community-based activities designed to strengthen supplemental polio immunization, routine polio immunization, surveillance for Acute Flaccid Paralysis and outbreak response. The CGPP is funded by USAID and collaborates with WHO, UNICEF, CDC, Rotary, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and numerous Ministries of Health.
* Graduated from CGPP after endemic transmission ended;
** Invited by Uganda government to return to support refugees and host communities.

REACHING. EMPOWERING. ASSESSING. LEVERAGING.
Since 1999, CGPP has affected REAL CHANGE by:
REACHING high-risk populations in remote, resistant and hard-to-reach locations through community mobilization to encourage participation in vaccination services and disease surveillance.
EMPOWERING communities through partnerships with trusted local and national NGOs and community-selected health volunteers to build capacity of local health systems for community resilience.
ASSESSING the multiple needs of communities by listening, learning and engaging from the ground up and responding with integrated services alongside polio activities to maximize community buy-in.
LEVERAGING the critical engagement of trusted persons—religious leaders, village chiefs and influential others—to promote health education messages and highly tailored, culturally-appropriate interventions—from households to health facilities.
1Strengthening of routine immunization services and expansion of immunization coverage in the population, including coverage with multiple doses of OPV
4Mop up and outbreak response campaigns
2Supplemental immunization with OPV for children under 5 to build and sustain population/herd immunity
3Surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in children under 15
The 4 PILLARS of global polio eradication:
In 2019:
POLIO Project

REAL RESULTS.
Reached a total of 2.1 MILLION households in extremely difficult contexts to increase the demand for immunization, improve polio vaccine acceptance and expand disease surveillance.
Supported the vaccination of 4 MILLION children under-5 during supplemental polio immunization campaigns.
Trained 13,000 community volunteers and health workers to build capacity for health systems strengthening.
Identified 4 of 10 AFP cases in project areas.
Expanded the project’s focus in Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan to include community-based surveillance for key zoonotic diseases strengthening Global Health Security.
In 2019:
Introducing effective community engagement to the national polio eradication program through a network of social mobilizers and influencers—ultimately contributing to India’s polio-free status.
Penetrating insecure, high-risk border areas affected by unrest to successfully reach pastoralist populations with referrals of pregnant women and newborns for vaccinations and surveillance for AFP, measles and neonatal tetanus through negotiation, persuasion, role modeling and religious mainstreaming.
Sustaining a robust disease surveillance system fueled by community key informants in the states of Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity and monitoring polio campaign quality across the country by hired school teachers.
Training more than 2,000 women as Volunteer Community Mobilizers with skills to overcome resistance from rumors, myths and misinformation to identify and reach missed children.
Leading the Cross-Border Health Initiative to support open communication between adjoining countries to reach nomadic populations at cross borders and migration pathways by linking health facility workers with community volunteers.
Mobilizing community members to search and report for AFP cases in refugee camps and host communities.
REAL IMPACT.
