Of that total, $54,900 was breeder’s incentive money, most of which had no or minimal entry fees! The $20,000-added Futurity with its $5,000-added Amateur drew 146 paid-in-full entries. After the qualifying round on Thursday night, the field was split in half with the top contenders running in the $33,024 Championship on Saturday night and the bottom half running in the $22,016 Consolation on Friday night. Contestants were also allowed to carry their times over to the two Elite Open 6D Races. KN Famous Czar, owned by Kimi Nichols, Brownwood, Texas, and expertly ridden by Jolene Montgomery, Purdon, Texas, barely edged Racin For Fortunes, owned by Robyn Herring and ridden by LaTricia Duke, 14.902 to 14.907 in the Championship Round. The victory was worth $6,605 in the futurity, plus their carryover time placed second in the 1D of Main Race 2 for an additional $1,750. “The first run (in qualifying), he didn’t fire really hard and he cheated a little to every barrel, so he came into them really flat and kind of picked his head up on the back side. I got him by them; it wasn’t horrible, but it definitely wasn’t anything to write home about.” Friday was tuning time for all of Montgomery’s horses, but Czar didn’t need much. Montgomery had planned on running Czar straight by the barrels and then tuning him off of them if he com- mitted to the turn, but the 4-year-old stallion ran straight by the barrels like she asked so he got a free pass on schooling day. On Saturday, things started out rough for Montgomery when the great Mulberry Canyon Moon tripped and pulled the reins out of her hands in the Texas WPRA Divisional Circuit Finals before the futurity. Given her lack of success in previous JB Quarter Horses Futurities, Montgomery had pretty much given up on winning any- thing in the Championship Round. “I had just kind of given up, and I was like whatever happens, happens,” she laughed. “Czar pulled through for us—finally.” The son of all-time leading barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of the Streakin Dash mare Kczartessa will continue his aged event career next year with Montgomery. The duo is also qualified for the Semifinals Rodeo for RFD-TV’s The American. Czar may also breed a few mares in 2015. “He’s like the best minded stud ever,” added Montgomery. “He’s just the sweetest horse. He always wants to be loved on, every time you go by his stall. He’s a sweetheart.” Consolation Mr JB 1031 (“Spit”) became the first horse raised by Joe and Dee Lynn Braman’s JB Quarter Horses to claim victory at their event. Dublin, Texas, in the qualifying round, but redeemed himself in the Consolation with a victorious 15.408, worth $5,153. “He had a great weekend,” said Mowry, who is sponsored by Cowgirl Tuff and Classic Equine. “This was my first futurity with him and only my second time to enter him. My first run I feel like I didn’t have very good timing with him, but I realized off of that run everything that I needed to do. I felt like I had everything straightened out for second run. I knew what I needed to go in and do. I felt like my timing was much better. We had a little bobble at the second barrel when my reins flipped over his head, but I just tried to not let him know it happened and not freak out about it, but I was basically out of control. I knew that colt was making a run, so I figured I would worry about stopping later!” Spit, who is a half-brother to Sherry Cervi’s former NFR horse BC Tinman, belongs to Dave and Lori Zabel of Horace, N.D., who also own Mowry’s 2013 futurity standout My Guy Can Fly. He has the BFA Futurity left before he goes home with My Guy to North Dakota. “He’s a nice colt,” added Mowry. “He’s just had rough luck. He’s one of those that’s into everything, and like they say ‘curiosity kills the cat…’ I’m just glad he had the opportunity to show what he can do. I think he’s going to make a nice horse. I’m so excited for him and Lori.”

JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Awards $10,000 Darci Winner and Mr JB 0940 topped the $10,000 Creating Legends Incentive at the 6th Annual JB Quarter Horses Futurity, held November 13-15 in Waco, Texas, in conjunction with the Elite Extravaganza and Texas Best Barrel Futurity Sale. The $10,000 Creating Legends Incentive was awarded to the top three horses by a JB Quarter Horses-owned stallion in the qualifying round of the $20,000-added Futurity. Winner, Los Lunas, N.M., and Mr JB 0940, affectionately known as “Franklin,” took home $5,000 for their 15.708 in the qualifying round. They also picked up $350 for finishing fifth in the $5,000-added Amateur Futurity sidepot. Winner purchased Franklin as yearling for $3,750 at the 2nd An-nual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale. Bred by JB Quarter Horses, Franklin, now 5, is by Dallas Fuel out of the Dash For Cash mare Joyful Joanie. Two-time WPRA World Champion guided the 5-year-old Paint mare Firewater In The Sky for her owner, breeder Mary Sorrells, Bryan, Texas, to a second-place Creating Legends check worth $3,000. Firewater In The Sky is by Chasin Firewater out of Earlenes Music, by Scats Music. Chasin Firewater also sired third-place finisher Heza Firewater Shake, owned and ridden by Shayna Gattis, Junction, Texas. The 5-year-old gelding out of Hardytime Gal, by Royal Shake Em, earned $2,000. Heza Firewater Shake was bred by Doug and Donna Hanover, and sold for $7,000 as a 2-year-old through the 3rd An-nual JB Quarter Horses Creating Legends Sale.

Other incentive winners Triple Crown 100 offered a $10,000 bonus with no entry fee for all horses that were paid in full to the program. The JB Quarter Horses Futurity qualifying round also hosted the $18,000 Crown Round Slot Race with a $ payout on a $1,500 entry fee. Kassie Mowry and Firewatermakemehappy, owned by Martha Smith, took top honors in the Crown Round for $7,200. Firewater-ontherocks earned $1,800 on behalf of the 4-year-old gelding out of Junior Country Girl, by Deep Note Jr, that was bred by Karma Loftin. Future Fortunes also awarded a $10,000 bonus for eligible foals. Results weren’t available at press time. The Texas Quarter Horse Association also awarded $6,900 in in-centive bonuses to TQHA members (a $30 fee) riding the offspring of Texas stallions that donated to their service auction last spring. Angela Festervan, riding Wedding Crasher, took home the $2,000 first-place check. The Money Depot earned $800 on behalf of the 4-year-old gelding out of Lot O Sugar, by Royal Finish. By Hope Sickler If you take one look at Natalie Foutch from Eldora, Iowa, you see a winner. If you take a minute to share a conversation with Foutch, you will immediately fall in love with her outgoing person-ality and you will quickly understand why she always seems to be at the top. Foutch is no stranger to winning. In fact, she wrapped up the 2014 WPRA world standings in 39th position, only hitting a small number of rodeos. Knowing that she had a good shot at the aver-age title at the Great Lake Circuit Finals, Foutch headed east to Louisville, Kentucky to see what she and her main mount, 11 year old Maggies Moon Fire “Orville”, could accomplish. Not only did she show up and shine, she won every round of the GLCF, virtually running away with the average title and a trip to the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo held in Florida this year. “I am so very grateful and I feel so fortunate and blessed. I ended up pulling some of my abdomen muscles prior to the finals and Orville took great care of me. He is truly a blessing in our life,” Foutch explained. Foutch turned up the heat every run she and Orville made but

after each run, had to quickly detour to the Justin Sports Medicine Trailer to get iced and wrapped up. “It was very cold in Louisville and I am sure that didn’t help the situation with my abdomen, but I wasn’t worried. I knew that Orville would take great care of me. All three of our runs were re-ally good, we had a couple bobbles on the third barrel the first two nights but luckily it never cost us.” Foutch and Orville got faster every round, running a 15.76 in the first round; a 15.61 in the second and a 15.60 in the third round, making her average time a 46.97; almost a whole second faster than Marne Loosenort who finished second place in the average. She cleaned house and is taking the Great Lakes Circuit Barrel Racing Average title back to Iowa with her. “My husband, PJ, and my son Drake were unable to make the circuit finals this year but they were there in my heart. Every run I make, I make for them and I don’t think anyone could be more excited to go to Florida then my 11 year old son, Drake. He cannot wait to go to Disneyworld”, Foutch would like to thank all of her family, friends and sponsors for their continued support and love.

Great Lakes Circuit Year End Title 23 year old Cheyenne Shipps from Dadeville, Missouri took the 2014 rodeo season to see what she and her horse, 14 year old sorrel gelding VF Easy Dash Home “Homie” could accomplish. They certainly made their mark, winning the year end title in the bar-rel racing in the Great Lake Circuit and also the Rookie title in the Great Lake Circuit. “Until this year, I have focused primarily on school. I graduated in May with a Masters Degree in ruminant nutrition and decided now would be just as good as any to rodeo for awhile,” explained Shipps. Shipps wasn’t a stranger to rodeo though. She grew up riding and barrel racing, starting at the ripe young age of 5 years old. “Winning the rookie of the year and year end title was very spe-cial to me. It felt really good to win against some great horses in the Great Lakes Circuit. However, Homie winning Barrel Horse of the Year was the most precious award I could win. He is so deserving of the award and it meant the world to me that the other girls in the circuit recognized it as well.” Homie and Shipps proved last spring that they were a force to reckon with, winning their first pro rodeo the end of March in Springfield, Missouri. “After our win in Springfield, we started running more consistent and things were going great. We didn’t win many rodeos but we placed at several throughout the summer,” Shipps said.Shipps explained that the Circuit Finals in Louisville, however, did not go as planned. “Circuit Finals didn’t go as great as I had hoped. Homie really

struggled with the ground, as he prefers harder ground. The ground was great in Louisville; it just wasn’t preferred by Homie. I am still very grateful to have made the trip there and blessed to have won the year end. The other girls in our circuit are extremely competitive and it was a tight competition throughout the finals.” Shipps and Homies plan as of now is to keep rodeoing and see where their success can take them. Shipps still helps out on her family’s cow/calf operation when she is home and enjoys watching

her younger sister grow and play high school basketball. She notes that being on the road is hard because she loves to spend as much time as possible with her family. “I have a great support system. My family has always been there, helping me along the way, pushing me to get better and encourag-ing me to keep going; especially my sister, Jolene Shipps. She does most the driving and caring for the horses while we are on the road. My fiancé, Blake Schnelle has also been a huge support, helping me make my dreams a reality,” explained Shipps. “And lastly my prayer warriors. None of this would be possible without the good Lord and I greatly appreciate all the extra prayers my loved ones provide for me.”

NFR 2014 #11-#15 Continued From Page 32Pierce: Streakin Easy April (Lolo), 6 yr sor. mareStreakin Perks Fool (Tiny), 6 yr old sor. mare

BRR: History of your horse(s).Pierce: Lolo is 6 years old and very new to the rodeo world. She was trained by Andrea Cline and I purchased her at the end of her 3 year old year or first part of her 4 year old year. We never did any futurities on her. Lolo doesn’t have any major accomplishments yet. I ran her at the Redding, California rodeo and she didn’t place and then came back the next night for the Champions Challenge and split first with Christi Loflin. That was her first rodeo experience ever. I also ran her at Salt Lake City and didn’t place. Other than that she has been just a jackpot horse when we have time to go. Tiny is 6 and also new to rodeo. She was trained by Samantha Flannery and I bought her last year about this time. Even though they both have only been to a couple rodeos ever, I think after a couple rounds they will be great and just get better as they age. Tiny was successful in the futurities up north with Samantha and she is a little harder to ride but with age will be awesome. She placed in a round at my circuit finals and placed at the Moab, Utah rodeo.

BRR: What about barrel racing keeps you motivated to go all the miles and compete all year long.Pierce: Barrel racing is so humbling. I think I have a competitive-ness inside me that keeps me going. I have many goals in rodeo I have yet to accomplish so that keeps me going until I accomplish them all.

BRR: Do you have an inspirational quote or saying that keeps you going during the year? Pierce: I have several bible verses that I love and give me the drive

I need to keep going. I do always remind myself and others that there isn’t anything possible without God.

BRR: What is your favorite thing to do with your horses other than barrels? Pierce: Besides barrel racing, I love just ranch riding. I love being around my horses and learning from them.

BRR: What one quality do you see in a horse and it makes you want to buy them? Pierce: When I’m looking at potential rodeo horses for myself; I always look at the way they move. I like them to move a certain way and I look at their eyes. I want to see that want to in them.

BRR: What makes your horse special? Pierce: The two I’m taking to Vegas are special to me because I see future potential to be great. Not everybody would load up two green rodeo horses and go to Vegas, but as much as I want to win the world, I know in God’s timing I will and right now we are just preparing our team for the future and this is part of it.

BRR: What quirk(s) does your horse have? Pierce: Tiny’s quirk is that she can be temperamental. She has days she is an angel and then days she is the devil. I just let her be who she wants to be. Lolo doesn’t stand tied often. She will pull back and try to pull the trailer over or whatever she is tied too. I just treat her like a dog and lead her around everywhere!

BRR: What one piece of horsemanship or barrel racing advice would you give people trying to run barrels on a professional level?Pierce: My advice for other barrel racers is to stay focused and don’t rush success. When the time is right it will all fall into place and feel easy rather than be constant disappointment.

#13 Trula Churchill, $74,385• Won the Pioneer City Rodeo (Palestine, Ill.)• Won the Longford (Kan.) Rodeo• Finished second at the Pincher Creek (Alberta) ProRodeo

Age: 45Hometown: Valentine, NEJoined WPRA: 1996

BRR: Which horses are you taking with to the finals?Churchill: A Streak Of Rita (Worm), 9 yr old, blue roan gelding, 15.3, 1250 lbs

BRR: History of your horse(s).Churchill: I have had him since he was born. Some of his major accomplishments: 3 time NFR qualifier, 3 time CFR qualifier, 1 time RNCFR qualifier, Canadian Champion 2011, California Circuit Champion 2013. His lifetime earnings are $470,000+.

BRR: What about barrel racing keeps you motivated to go all the miles and compete all year long.Churchill: Barrel racing is a competitive challenge. I love challenges and competition. It is easy to keep after something that you enjoy. Along the way you meet some very amazing people and see parts of the US and Canada that most people never get to see or even know exist.

BRR: Do you have an inspirational quote or saying that keeps you going during the year? Churchill: I rely on the Winston Churchill quote, “Never, never, never give up.”

BRR: What is your favorite thing to do with your horses other than barrels?

Churchill: When I’m home I like to help on the ranch with my horses. They enjoy getting to chase a few cows.

BRR: What one quality do you see in a horse and it makes you want to buy them? Churchill: For me, that final deciding factor is the look they have in their eye. It’s not really anything I can describe, but there is some kind of connection that is made by the look in their eyes that says take me home.

BRR: What makes your horse special? Churchill: Worm loves his job and does it the best he can every time. Any mistakes that are made are rider error. He wants to please so much that he does what I ask even if it is wrong.

BRR: What quirk(s) does your horse have? Churchill: One of his biggest quirks is that he will kick with both hind feet after he runs if I lead him back to the trailer; therefore, I almost always ride him back for safety reasons. He’s just playing, but it wouldn’t make it hurt any less if he kicked someone. Worm also likes for me to scratch his bum and will back me into the corner of his stall until I get his itch scratched to his satisfaction.

BRR: What one piece of horsemanship or barrel racing advice would you give people trying to run barrels on a professional level?Churchill: If you want to run barrels at a professional level you have to spend the time in the saddle. You can pick up tips and ideas from many sources, but you have to put in saddle time and not necessarily just running the barrels.

Barrel Racing Report November 18, 2014 Page 35

BRR: History of your horse(s).Lyne: I bought Pistoletta in July 2013 from LeAnn and Amanda, so I have owned her for just about a year and a half. She was trained by Latricia Duke and I bought her from LeAnn Kay Rafferty and Amanda Kay. She was a very accomplished futurity horse, winning the Jud Little Futurity and WrapN3 Futurity, Reserve Champion of the JB Futu-rity and WPRA Futurity and placed all year at the big futurities and the next year at the derbies. This is her 1st NFR qualification. She has lifetime earnings of around $160,000+.

BRR: What about barrel racing keeps you motivated to go all the miles and compete all year long.Lyne: For me, with having Pistoletta, it is more about making a name for Pistoletta, so people can see how special she is. I love the horses, I do it for the horses, that’s the only reason I really want to go.

BRR: Do you have an inspirational quote or saying that keeps you going during the year? Lyne: My friends send inspirational messages when I need them. Everyone always asks me what my Dad, Phil Lyne (5 Time World Champion, 2-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy) tells me, all he tells me when I ask is “Keep at it”! He did used to tell us when we were younger, “Don’t beat yourself ”, just go try to make the best run you can and don’t worry about trying to beat someone else.

BRR: What is your favorite thing to do with your horses other than barrels? Lyne: If I’m home, what I like to do is ride them in the pasture. Also, with Pistoletta being a mare from a great family of horses, breeding her and getting babies is exciting as well. I am hoping she is as good of producer as her mother. I actually have a Dash Ta Fame coming out of Pistoletta in February. LeAnn Kay Rafferty

and Schiller Ranch both have fillies out of Pistoletta already.

BRR: What one quality do you see in a horse and it makes you want to buy them? Lyne: For a rodeo horse, I usually look at their disposition and quickness. Right now, one rodeo horse I have has a great disposition (Pistoletta) and the other is really quick (Java Buzz). Another thing I look for with a rodeo horse, the horse needs to be able to stand up and handle bad ground.

BRR: What makes your horse special? Lyne: To me everything about her makes her special. I have wanted her since she was born and LeAnn sent me her picture in her little red blanket. I rode her as a 2 year old and I have just always been a part of everything with her and that has been special. Pistoletta is a big girl with a huge heart and loves her job. She’s so good minded, I think that is why she adapted to the road so easily for a young horse.

BRR: What quirk(s) does your horse have? Lyne: She really likes to itch herself and can bite herself about anywhere. My friends laugh at her for the way she will maneuver around to itch herself, but I guess it keeps her stretched and limber! She is really laid back and lazy as well. If I will have friends ride her when I am gone they always complain about how lazy she is and how long it takes them to get where they are going!

BRR: What one piece of horsemanship or barrel racing advice would you give people trying to run barrels on a professional level?Lyne: The main thing if you are going to start rodeoing, talk to someone you trust to help you. Find a mentor you can call for advice and positive words when you need them. The other impor-tant thing I learned this year is if your intuition or gut tells you not to run somewhere, maybe due to the setup not fitting your horse or your draw on the ground not being advantageous, listen to it and just don’t run. Move on and run when and where you can win!

BRR: Which horses are you taking with to the finals?Bean: Heza Bug Leo Bugs (Trip DuPerier), 9, sorrel, 15.1, 1250, white stripFirewater Cool Eyes (owned Rosie Bradley), 13, buckskin, 15.1, 1100Ur One Famous Rebel (stud), 5, chestnut, 15.1, 1100, white streak

BRR: History of your horse(s).Bean: Trip DuPerier owns Heza Bug Leo and he originally came from Arbie & Betty Miller. Latricia Duke ran him through his futurity year and some of his derby year. He also ran at the Finals (2011) with Angie Meadors. Trip sent him to me in May of 2013. As a futurity horse he won about $100k, then Angie went to the Finals on him when he was 6, and also won San Antonio Rodeo on him. I have won San Angelo, TX, Nacogdoches, TX, Graham, TX and Spokane, WA. I also won TCRA Association on him in 2013 along with Horse of The Year in the TCRA. This will be his 2nd Trip to the Finals (NFR). His lifetime earnings are $200,000 plus.

BRR: What about barrel racing keeps you motivated to go all the miles and compete all year long.Bean: I think because barrel racing just gets better every year. Look at all the toughs out there this year, no one horse dominated. I like the challenge of pushing myself to keep learning and getting to the next level so I can continue to win.

BRR: Do you have an inspirational quote or saying that keeps you going during the year? Bean: Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I am so very blessed that my passion is my job, I never feel like I’m working!

BRR: What is your favorite thing to do with your horses other than barrels? Bean: I do like to take them out and pleasure ride them, let them relax and be a horse once in a while. And of course give them treats!

BRR: What one quality do you see in a horse and it makes you want to buy them? Bean: I always look for balanced conformation and a soft, kind eye and now we also look at the pedigree. I like to watch them move and see that they use their butt real naturally.

BRR: What makes your horse special? Bean: Bugs wants to win for you as much as you want to win your-self. Once he learns who you are and he loves you and trusts you with all his heart, he will give you his whole heart in the arena. He gives you everything he has every time he cracks the gate.

BRR: What quirk(s) does your horse have? Bean: He will run by his first barrel once in a while and he is real

ornery on the ground after he runs good. When he comes out and knows he made a good run, he is so proud of what he has done. He is very cocky and arrogant and proud himself, he will run around you and touch you with his nose and get you dirty (especially if you have a white shirt on), it’s like his own celebration party.

BRR: What one piece of horsemanship or barrel racing advice would you give people trying to run barrels on a professional level?Bean: Several things come to mind. Don’t ever give up on yourself. If you ask for advice, and you get constructive criticism just remember they are trying to help; not hurt your feelings. When you are looking for help, find someone with a similar style to yourself so it will come more naturally when they do try to help you. Believe in yourself, when you leave the alley believe you are going to do your best. Never give up on your dream!

Headin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

It is only a few more days until Thanksgiving. Food, fun, family, and friends! But more importantly, let’s give God thanks for all He has done for us!

A few days ago, I was complaining to Mike about all my body parts that were hurting. Ever vigilant to keep us on the right track, he said, “Let’s be thankful for the parts that aren’t hurting”. I stood there batting my eyes. Finally I agreed……my hair wasn’t hurting! LOL! “Don’t tell others about your labor pains….SHOW THEM THE BABY!” I don’t know about you, but generally it’s easier to com-plain about what’s going on in our lives then to speak what we are believing for! We get more sympathy that way. Let’s rather lay hold of what the Bible says about us. II Corin.

2:14 states that God always causes us to triumph. That’s good! Phil 4:6-7 tells us not to worry but to pray about everything and we’ll have peace. And that’s good. III John 2 says God wants us to pros-per and be in health. That’s VERY good. He wants the absolute best for us in every area of our lives. We are so thankful for all He has done and all He has given us! God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Mike Morrison and his wife Sherry are ordained ministers in their own nondenominational church in Gillette, WY. They also travel widely as circuit riders

ministering over a large area of the western states.
